Dolphins sign return man Perry

By TIM GRAHAM
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Saturday, March 15, 2008

The Dolphins have signed kick return specialist Tab Perry to a one-year deal for just under $1 million, a source told The Palm Beach Post.

Perry was an unrestricted free agent after playing three years with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he also was a reserve receiver. Perry, who is 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, has battled numerous injuries since an impressive rookie campaign in which he set the club record with 1,562 kickoff return yards and scored two offensive touchdowns - one rushing, one receiving - despite having only seven touches.

In the past two seasons he played a combined four games because of recurring hip injuries that eventually led to season-ending surgery in October.

Perry, 26, set multiple kick return records at UCLA, where he played for new Dolphins receivers coach Karl Dorrell.

The addition of Perry creates an interesting situation with last year's first-round draft pick, Ted Ginn Jr., who showed dazzling flashes while handling virtually all of the kick and punt return duties.

Ginn returned every punt for a 9.6-yard average and one touchdown. He returned all except 15 kickoffs for a 22.7-yard average.

Should be VERY interesting to see what Sparano does here.

Ginn's average is misleading.  If the refs didn't call back those two returns, his average would be in the top 10.

Why they need this guy, I don't know.  Do they think Ginn can be a major factor as a receiver and don't want to burn him out returning kicks?

He should definitely return punts, though.

It's a training camp move, Ginn is looking like being one of our top receievrs, we don't want to destory him in TC  so this guys a nice spell guy.

I think it's a good up-side signing. If this guy can stay healthy (huge IF), he's actually proven that he's got talent.

Misleading ? Try miserable !!!
The facts are Ginn are what they are, there is no such stat book called if only the refs didnt flag us.
Look we got ripped off picking Ginn last year in the first round, it was the beginning of Camerons end, he plained old dropped the ball and now we are stuck with him.

Ripped off?   Oh brother.  Here we go again with probably another stupid " Miami should have drafted Quinn "  hijack

I'm constantly amazed at the revisionism flourishing on these boards with regards to Ginn. Sure, he may have been a reach at #9, but EVERY SINGLE (major) mock draft out there had the guy going in the first round. He was considered on of the absolute top wide receivers in the draft.

Now, all of a sudden, he's garbage?

Just because he was a stretch at #9 and would have been a better pick at 16 or so (I wasn't able to find a mock that had him later than 19, btw), that doesn't mean he isn't a good player.

Personally, I think Cameron botched the whole thing by declaring he had drafted the "Ginn family" and that he was drafted as a return guy.

Ginn was generally (universally among the 7 mocks I could find still online just now) regarded as the second best receiver on the board (after Johnson, who went at #2).

So, call him a reach, but stop being a revisionist moron about the whole thing. (not directed at any single individual, but at the entire group of Ginn-bashers).

I feel we drafted him as a Wr,the being a return man was a bonus....So this just gives Ginn more time to get a some"wiggle" and break a tackle ability.Hopefully it will give him more time to work on his route running. He can't always outrun the coverage to get open, and needs to work at getting open, despite his speed.

I have no problems bringing another "return guy"

Look, there are 2 things to note

It doesn't matter WHO is returning kicks for us if

1) We can't block for them

2) The refs call phantom holding penalties on us every time we break a big return

WRONG!!!!!!! I was relieved to see we passed up Quinn, but Ginn was wrong for Miami and still is, he doesn't know how to run good routes. We could have done much better then a guy who was projected as a second rounder.

I'm assuming you mean "than", but even then your comment is just inflammatory bullshit.

Ginn was projected to be a first rounder by every single major mock draft out there (that I was able to find). Everyone had him as the #2 receiver. No one had him going later than #19, most to the Rams around 13.

Ginn wasn't projected to be a second rounder anywhere else but in your twisted imagination.

Great, at least its not something that ignorant.

You could not find one mock that had Ginn as a 2nd Rder.  Not one, well unless its one you did.

As for Ginn's route running.  At what percent do you believe rookie Wrs come into the NFL knowing how to run solid routes?     I was not a huge Ginn fan when Miami drafted him, but the guy did one thing last year that impressed me.  He caught the freakin ball.  That alone made him worth the pick for Miami.

Only time will tell if Ginn was the wrong pick, but with his speed and what appears to be a solid ability to catch the ball, he could turn into the deep threat Miami needs.  You are correct that he is raw in his route running.  No big deal.  That is something very teachable & I hope one day fans realize that rookies are not drafted with the expectations of contributing their rookie year, outside of a few positions.
