Title: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Defense54 on March 18, 2008, 12:29:46 pm Whats your cup of tea?
No doubt everyone loves a great 50 Yd pass, catches made by just the toes inbounds, and to see a runningback break one for the distance. But The is something about a goaline stance , or an interception or a Fumble recovery that I can't explain . I really enjoy taking away points from opposing Teams then just earning points. I just really Love watching the defensive side of the ball. Its like slapping them . Which do you prefer and why? Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: ethurst2 on March 18, 2008, 01:16:05 pm I would say that a goal line stand can REALLY turn a game.
I think it was Super Bowl 13, San Francisco 49ers vs. Cincinatti Bengals. The Bengals were down on the 1 yard line and ran four plays and the 49ers stuffed them. It was the greatest goal line stand that I had ever seen. That stand actually saved the game for the 49ers. To be at the one foot line and not not score any points is demoralizing. Former Bronco Randy Gradishar , 49er Hacksaw Reynolds and Former Dolphin Zach Thomas are the best linebackers I've ever seen stopping plays near their own goal line. Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: fyo on March 18, 2008, 03:09:56 pm I like sacks and dominating line play (both sides). Sadly, only the sacks are really given much air time.
I would also love to see some secondary play, but that's something we get NONE of on TV. With everything going digital, I don't understand why they don't sell a package where you can swap "views" yourself. I'd love to see some all-22 footage sometimes. Sure, I would probably leave it on the standard "produced" transmission most of the time, but it's certainly something I would pay extra for. I was in London one year while Wimbledon was going on and the BBC had like 5 or 6 games on their digital package that you could swap between anytime you wanted (you could also select all kinds of stats stuff). Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Defense54 on March 18, 2008, 03:35:25 pm Quote To be at the one foot line and not not score any points is demoralizing. Thats the word I was looking for............Demoralizing! I love when a defense Demoralizes another........except when its Miami of course! ;) Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Sunstroke on March 18, 2008, 04:01:45 pm I have to agree with ethurst...there is nothing more gratifying to me, as a fan, than a stout goalline stand. Defense wins for me, hands down. It was actually SB 16 though, and I watched that goal line stand from the common room of our barracks in basic training. When Bunz stuffed the screen pass to whoever that Bengal was...at the 1-foot line, I almost had a coronary, I was screaming so damned loud. By the time they hammered Pete Johnson on 4th and goal to put things away, I was emotionally spent, and could manage only a fist pump or two from my seat. Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on March 18, 2008, 05:19:42 pm To be at the one foot line and not not score any points is demoralizing. Which is more demoralizing? Being inside your opponent's five and turning the ball over on downs or being inside your opponent's five and fumbling or throwing a pick? Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Dol-Phan in Dallas on March 18, 2008, 05:30:02 pm Great topic! You guys are right about a goal line stand being demoralizing to the other team. And just as important as the demoralizing impact on the other team is the huge swing in momentum and boost that it gives to the team that makes the stand.
As for whether exciting plays on defense or offense gets me geeked up the most....it is too close to call. A big play on offense or a great drive down the length of the field that eats up 8 minutes on the clock are awesome. But a big play on defense, turnover, huge hit, etc. definitely pump me up also. I'll take a whole bunch of both, please. ;D Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: 1 dol fan on March 18, 2008, 10:45:00 pm Personally, i love the 3-back shove it up your throat type of offense that can make the big play on a play-action pass but will be the 3 yrds. and a pile of dust.... not to be confused with the dolphins usual.... 3 yards and a pile of SHITacki mushrooms
Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Dave Gray on March 19, 2008, 12:43:17 am Of the two, I'm a defense guy, but you're forgetting my true favorite, SPECIAL TEAMS.
I love hidden-yardage. I can think back on so many great games where we've gotten outplayed, but still won. It's because of timely field-goals, field position, and an occasional big play from your return team. Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: dolphins4life on March 19, 2008, 12:47:44 am ^^^^^^^
I can also think of so many big games where we lost because of special teams the past six years. Special teams used to be one of our strong points when we were a playoff contender year after year. Now, our coverage and blocking stink and we commit far too many penalties Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: StL FinFan on March 19, 2008, 12:52:38 am Defense rules.
Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Guru-In-Vegas on March 19, 2008, 05:56:58 am ^ Yep, I agree.
Nothing better than being on the defensive side of the ball and actually feeling confident in our chances at getting it back without them scoring. I guess the same thing can be said about being on offense and the certainty that you're going to score. Except, I feel like a team is more dominant team when they lay the smack down and only let the other team score a pair of field goals all game. Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Thundergod on March 19, 2008, 09:48:37 am SWEET! I'm the first one. Gimme OFFENSE baby. If I can't stop your ass, I'll outscore your ass. There's nothing more satisfying than watching a defense get tired throughout a football game while your offense runs the score up. Blow 'em out, punch 'em in the gut, hold that knee to their neck. Gimme OFFENSE baby.
I want my team to have that '07 Patriots, Manning's Colts, the '99 Rams, the Marino years Dolphins type of offenses. I'm sick of trying to win it in the end with a puss-ass offense. WORD to me. ;D Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: fyo on March 19, 2008, 09:58:57 am I'm surprised at the number of "defense" fans... not what you'd expect from the media and the direction the NFL has taken in recent years. I guess that's the difference between hardcore fans and casual fans.
Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: Thundergod on March 19, 2008, 10:45:51 am Yeah, casual...
Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: fyo on March 19, 2008, 11:36:15 am Yeah, casual... Easy now, I wasn't saying that everyone who prefers offense to defense is "just" a casual fan. My point was that perhaps the split between fans of offense and defense is different for hardcore fans than it is for casual fans. E.g. maybe offense is preferred by 90% of casual fans, while only by 25% of hardcore fans. Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense........... Post by: CF DolFan on March 19, 2008, 11:45:53 am If it's my team then I want to see some great offense but other than that ... nothing beats a hard hit. I love to see QBs get bindsided or receivers destroyed acrtoss the middle. Of course, I don't want anyone to get hurt but there is something about watching someone get pummeled that is exciting!

I love to see QBs get bindsided or receivers destroyed across the middle. Of course, I don't want anyone to get hurt but there is something about watching someone get pummeled that is exciting! yeah......I gotta admit there are a few teams and a few players that while I don't want to see anything permanent .........I wouldn't mind some serious pain being inflicted. >:D Title: Re: Defense vs. Offense...........
