Title: What are you running on your computers?
Post by: bsfins on April 11, 2008, 05:51:21 pm
What operating system are you running?
I was wondering how many people have made the leap to Vista?

All I hear is about how bad it is,and all the problems,How many system resources it takes to run,The incompatibility problems,Stable programs crashing on Vista...

I still run Xp, and have no problems..well 98% of the time...I have no plans to buy vista, but it seems like alot of people in our office seem to think I'm being ...Stubborn for not wanting to upgrade....I just don't see it as an upgrade.

Maximum number of votes 3..I figure there are alot of people that have more than 1 Computer, and or laptops.

Until the entire planet runs Vista with no problems, I'll run XP thank you very much. Besides, I've seen too many issues with game compatibility, this is one PC gamer that'll not apply, no sir no sir no sir.

Linux. I actually do have XP installed on a partition, but I haven't had to boot into Windows so far this year. Last time I booted into XP was right after X-mas when I wanted to check a DVD with holiday clips. Well, I hadn't installed the mjpeg video codec for my camera and Windows chocked on the DVD when it auto-opened it. Froze the whole damn system, with nothing to do but hard reboot the thing.

So, yeah, probably not going to boot into Windows anytime soon... And considering the number of patches that have been released in the past 6 months, I'd probably have to download the patches from my Linux system, burn them to a DVD, pull the internet connection and then boot into Windows and apply them while offline.

I'm running vista with minor issues like Explorer shutting down. It seems to be getting better as I don't have it happen as much as I used too.

I heard a blip somewhere about Microsoft releasing Windows 7 in 2010.  Maybe Vista will become was Windows ME is.

Early 2010 is the plan. Exactly 3 years after Vista.

For reference, XP was released about 13 months after ME.

While I believe there's at least a chance the Vista will be "orphaned" like ME, it's hard to compare the two situations:

-> Business had Win2K, but this time around, Microsoft is killing off XP despite huge demand. For "ordinary" consumers as well as businesses.
-> ME was, functionally, a crippled 98 with a shiny new front-end. Oh, wait... ;-). No, seriously, while Vista is crippled and does have a shiny new front-end, it's pretty far removed from XP and does have numerous security enhancements, although many of them sub-optimally implemented.
-> DirectX 10 further cuts ties with previous generation.
-> Lag time of 3 years for Vista -> Win7, compared to 13 months for ME -> XP.
