Title: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: jtex316 on April 28, 2008, 07:59:21 pm I'm hearing from all sides (Dave Gray, work, Television, even some bloggers) that GTA4 is the BEST GAME EVER in the history of video games.
Is it REALLY that good? I mean, REALLY THAT GOOD?????? Is it better than SMB3 for NES? Better than Ocarina of Time for N64? Better than Halo, the winner of our 2006 Video-Game Bracket on TDMMC? (Remember that?) If this game has any flaw or "downside" to it, then your answer has to be NO, because of the perfect 10.0 rating that it received. Title: Re: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: Dave Gray on April 28, 2008, 08:48:36 pm I can't say. I haven't played it yet.
However, rankings are relative to the time a game was released. So, if SMB3 were released today, it wouldn't get 10s, nor would Ocarina, obviously. Also, 10 rated games can have flaws, because there will always be technological limits. I think that GTA4 has a lot more at stake than the other games you mentioned. -- Single player campaign, separate co-op missions, many multilayer vs. modes, etc. Title: Re: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: Dave Gray on April 29, 2008, 04:41:48 am All three major gaming sites have given it their highest score possible. 10/10 from IGN and Gamespot, and an A+ from 1UP.
I can't ever remember that happening before. I got the game and played the offline mode for about an hour. ...and, from what I can tell, it's really, really good. I don't know what the future holds, but so far, I've been thoroughly entertained. The production values and attention to detail and probably the most impressive thing about it. For a city so large, it's insanely detailed, not only with graphics and stuff, but with little things. I can't even really bring up one thing, because I've been surprised by something every few minutes. Some things I've noticed: - When you take a nap, you wake up to an alarm. - When you take out a light post, wires pull out of the ground and begin to spark. - When you walk down stairs, you do it straight on, but when you start to run, your body turns sideways. - If you have to repeat a mission, the conversations you have while driving are different. - You can watch TV. I sat there for a few minutes watching some fake show and fake commercials. - Certain cars have GPS that talks and tells you when to turn. - When you knock out your headlights, you lose lighting. - You have a cell phone and can call whoever you meet, whenever you want. The game feels very much like GTAs before it, with welcome additions. And the game is hilarious, so far. I've laughed out loud. There was this one incident where I had a date with this girl, and on the way there, my cousin called on the phone, saying that these guys were after him. I decided to go on my date anyway. We went bowling at the boardwalk. Afterwards, my cousin called from the hospital, bitching me out for letting him take a beating. When I picked him up, we had a very funny conversation about how my breath better smell like titties, and how he probably would've sold me out for titty breath. Title: Re: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: Thundergod on April 29, 2008, 07:13:07 pm Games have gotten perfect scores and dubbed greatest game ever all the time. I remember when MGS2 came out those same words were uttered about it and a 10 wasn't a high enough score to give it. Best game ever should be a personal tag, cause there are alot of "greatest games ever" that I wouldn't even sniff at if you gave the game to me.
But I will be picking this game up. Looks bad ass. Title: Re: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: cyan on April 29, 2008, 09:16:52 pm NO P.C. version...-3 stars! ;D Amen to that. Being able to play games in all rooms of the house has gotten me spoiled now. Consoles tied down to just one room have actually become a hassle. Plus the ability to play casually while simultaneously checking email for work, having IM conversations, and watching a movie is nice. Fuck, I'm a nerd. It might as well be me actually walking around in the city punching and jacking people!
Those T.V. shows in the game are F'IN HILARIOUS!!! :D Title: Re: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: StL FinFan on April 30, 2008, 10:14:01 am Listen to Liberty Rock Radio 97.8 for a song called "Street Kids".
Title: Re: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: Brian Fein on April 30, 2008, 10:57:10 am I played online in "free mode" for about 3 hours last night. Its everything I've ever wanted. It has the GTA feel with a gameplay crossed between Splinter Cell and Gears Of War. The realism and attention to detail are amazing.
I agree - BEST GAME EVER! Title: Re: Is the new Grand Theft Auto game REALLY that good? Post by: Dave Gray on May 03, 2008, 05:27:16 pm OK, here's what I think of the game so far, good and bad things.
If you've never played a GTA before, you'll probably be amazed with the wonderful things, as well as the shortcomings. The most amazing this about this game is how complete it is. The world exists around you, and if you can think it, you can probably do it. There is a fully fleshed-out radio, with many stations, television, with many stations, and Internet, including email. All of these things are inter-related, as well as chatter on the street, billboards, commercials, cell-phones, police datebases, and people you talk with on missions. These things tie together in a way that draws you into the world. Also, everything is not linear. You set things up now that will happen later. Here's an example of what I mean: There was this one situation where I needed to "off" a guy. I didn't know where he lived, but I knew that he was gay and used the game's equivalent of match.com. I went to an Internet cafe and logged on and tried to set up a date, after finding his profile. Then, I went about my business. A little while later, I went back and checked my email, and he replied with a place and time to meet, at a diner. So, a reminder was added to my cell phone. Again, I went about my business until a little alarm went off reminding me about the date, so I drove to the spot, met the guy, chatted for a bit, and then blew his face off with a shotgun. After it was over, I dialed up the guy who called the hit, to let him know the job was done. In that one mission alone, the Internet, email, cellphone, etc are all tied together to make one cohesive world. The game continues to do this, over and over, in surprising ways. If there is an ad on the radio for comedy shows, you can go to the show. There are still negatives to this game, and some of that comes from the juxtaposition of how great the rest of it is. Because the world lets you do so many things well, and because people react so cleverly in so many situations, when something doesn't make sense, it sticks out. For example, there are so many funny situations that can happen while you're on a date, but it would be impossible to program for every possible scenario, so sometimes things come up that are out of character. You can ditch your car and go swim across the river, and your date will follow you, never mentioning it. It's a minor thing, but these things continue to happen, and from what I can tell, because of the scope of the game, are unavoidable. And while the controls (especially in gunplay) are improved, they are not even close to the quality of control we've come to expect from standalone shooters. The same is true with platforming elements. Jumping, running, etc -- they can't hold a candle to the kind of precision you'd get from Super Mario Bros, but you shouldn't expect that. Sometimes movements are jerky and you don't feel like you're as nimble as you'd like to be. If you'd played the series before, you'll be comfortable, but if you're new to it, things might feel a little wonky. In this particular GTA, I find things to by really dark at times. Since many parts of the game can happen during the day or night, there have been a few times when I've been carrying out a mission that takes me to a back alley in the middle of the night, and I can't see a thing. You don't have a flashlight or anything, and you have to pretty much result to "feeling around" to find your way out. Above all, this game is really smart and really funny. I laugh out loud almost every time I play it. The cell phone is a great way to build character development without breaking the action, something that the previous games couldn't do. They use it as a way to add narrative and make for some very comedic situations. While you're running from the SWAT team, your buddy may call you asking if you want to meet at the titty bar, and you calmly respond "I'd love to, but I'm a little tied up at the moment." It's great, and these things are timed perfectly. I have only scratched the surface of what this game has to offer, but I'm very impressed with what it continues to offer. If you have the means, you should definitely check it out. No matter what kind of stuff you're into, there's enough stuff to do in this game, that you're likely to find something you'll enjoy. |
