Title: MARLINS
Post by: landlocked on May 03, 2008, 02:33:33 am
They always have good young talent,it's just a shame whenever i see any highlights, they are playing in an almost empty stadium. When is south Florida gonna come out and support these guys?

Title: Re: MARLINS
Post by: Thundergod on May 03, 2008, 04:18:01 am
In about 10 years when all of S.FL's children whose parents haven't turned 'em into either Yankees or Red Sox fans and let them grow up having learned to support their home team. Coupled with a few competitive/winning seasons, our boys could see the ball park a little more than half full!  ;D

That new stadium might draw crowds for a year, maybe two, but if they keep up this type of management regarding player personnel, they'll never draw an adequate fan base.

Post by: SportsChick on May 04, 2008, 09:15:20 pm
The problem is that the good young talent will be gone in a couple years because management doesn't care about paying the talent.

Brian and I will go to 8-10 games this season (can't remember how many games we bought tickets for)

You  guys ask the same question year after year. ::) ::) ::)

1.  Stadium issues

2. The management isnt   bad at all.  In fact the Marlins have one of the best management teams.  Who else in baseball can clean slate a team every 3 yrs to bring up more talent and keep payroll down.   Once the Marlins get their own Home field things will be much  more different.

3. Blame  Uncle Wayne for putting too much on his plate when he tried to own every major sport franchise in S. Fla.

4.  Fan base is still quite young in S Fla.   you guys have realize that the Marling are only 15 yrs old.  Most ppl in S. Fla  grew up watching  the Yankees, Braves,  Pirates..   e.g.  My dad grew up a  Braves fan and he did not jump ship like I did when the Marlins Moved in.

5.   there are hell of a lot more thing i want to add but who cares anyways ??? ::)

The Florida Marlins are the reason we invaded Iraq.

They were looking for cheaper stadium solutions.

Title: Re: MARLINS
Post by: Brian Fein on May 05, 2008, 11:11:49 am
A - the new stadium won't draw more fans.  It will draw less fans because the location sucks.

B - the TV view is misleading.  Even if they draw 30,000, the stadium looks empty because its a 78,000-seat stadium and only about half of the stadium is even available for sale.

C - People just don't like baseball down here, and the ones that do like the Yankees, Cubs, or Red Sox.  No one cares.

SportsChick and I went to a game a few weeks ago and were amazed at the amount of people sitting around us NOT watching the game.  They were there to drink, take pictures of each other, play grab-ass with their friends, do the wave, etc.  They show up in the 4th inning, stand around for 20 minutes trying to figure out which seat is theirs, then get up every 5 minutes to go buy more vodka-tonics.  It is annoying, my baseball-going experience is very much declined because of these people.

Title: Re: MARLINS
Post by: MaineDolFan on May 05, 2008, 11:19:14 am
^^Generally speaking - this is avoided in the more expensive seats.

This happens everywhere, Brian.  A quarter of the people at Red Sox games are more interested in calling of their friends to say "hey, I'm at a Sox game.  What are YOU doing?"

Title: Re: MARLINS
Post by: SportsChick on May 05, 2008, 11:24:44 am
But it's a choice, spend less, go to 8-10 games or spend more and go to 2-3. Personally, more baseball makes me happier.

Title: Re: MARLINS
Post by: MaineDolFan on May 05, 2008, 11:30:13 am
I am with you, S_C.  I love me some baseball.  I generally find that minor league ball is the place to spend the bucks.  It's a better family atmosphere, people are nicer.  Crowds are smaller.

When I am opening my wallet, and have my choice, I would take Hadlock Stadium over Fenway every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I am regretting buying all those tickets up front.   Now that I've spent 2 games in "the tank" I am with Maine - I wish I had at least moved over to the outfield or bullpen seats.

I had a partial season in section 110 (for those of you who know where that is) right on the fence next to left field.  Those were the best seats I've ever sat in, all considered, IMO.

Bri - I have heard of people that have been given credit for their tickets and had their seats moved.  You should look into that.  You bought the tickets, you won't get a refund.  But they may be willing to move your seats and give you credit for the ones you purchased.  A lot of stadiums that don't sell out will do that.

Nice!  Who are they playing?
Baltimore's AAA team.

First row tickets for $14 including fees. Awesome.

Google maps says it should take 1/2 hour from my grandfather's house

I think we may have to check in to that.  Otherwise, we may be "forced" to go to a few more games.

So here's a good question for your Marlins fans.   What would other teams do if the Marlins win the World Series with this $22 million payroll?

Title: Re: MARLINS
Post by: Fau Teixeira on May 11, 2008, 09:15:46 am
that isn't a question for marlins fans .. that's a question for 200 million payroll yankees fans

Title: Re: MARLINS
Post by: Sunstroke on May 11, 2008, 10:38:33 am

Just my opinion, obviously, but I think that a $22 million team of young players winning the world series would be good for the game of baseball. Can't ya just see it next year... A guy wearing a Marlins cap runs into a guy wearing a Yankees cap on the street. Marlins fan looks at the Yankees cap, starts laughing hysterically and walks away.

Nah...the Marlins payroll in 2003 had to be over $50 million. Hell, Pudge was making close to $10 million himself that season.

Marlins extend the winning streak to 7 in a row and, thanks to AZ losing yesterday, Florida now has the best record in baseball.

Did anyone else catch the "Inside the Marlins" show on FSNF after the Reds game tonight? I thought it was reeeeally good. Hanley Ramirez, full interview in english, plus interviews with his mom and dad, early film of him as a kid playing ball, and quite a few segments of Hanley playing for the Sea Dogs. Scouts, Larry Beinfest and other folks all breaking his game down...Very cool 30 minutes of Hanley.

Want me to go find it in the archives? ;)

Gonzo has been stepping up in LF for Willingham since his back injury.

I am really excited about the depth that we have.

They called up Jones tonight, and hopefully immediately replaces Amezega in there platoon in CF.

We are going to be loaded with arms towards the second half of the year, Mitre and Anibal Sanchez are coming off injuries, and Voldstat and Ryan Tucker are burning down houses in AA.

Things are starting to come together.

The Marlins and Padres both played 18 innings yesterday...sucks that only one of them had a doubleheader scheduled.

I loved watching the Fish sweep the Giants doubleheader...

I was really happy to see that Adrian Gonzalez saved his 14th dinger to endthe Padres-Reds marathon yesterday after 18.

Side note...Lil_B texts me around the 14th-15th inning, basically saying that he hopes the SD-Cin game keeps going so he can get some more fantasy points out of it. I start laughing, because I am torn as well. I want my Padres to put the Reds away, but I definitely needed a little more fantasy stats out of Adrian.  Glad we could get both...

I think if the Fish would have moved to the North ie Palm Beach Vero area more fans could attend. Lots of peeps up this way love baseball. We get more fans at Grapefruit league games than attend the M.L. With the price of gas at $3.89 a gallon, hang on $4.02 (went up again!) and the cost of tickets who can afford the trip.

The point is mute by now. They are moving to the Orange Bowl, and its final. I am just pumped we have a stadium coming.

3 @ Philly starting Friday.

I like what I am seeing out of the Marlins...I think their pitching will get better as Andrew continues to improve, and some of the missing horses (Josh, Sanchez, etc...). I think FL already has the bats  to make a playoff run, and just hope that when they are still in contention once the trade deadline gets here, that management makes a deal to bring in a veteran arm to help the postseason push.

Just make sure your Sox make it to the World Series, because if Florida has to settle for the Angels or the Rays<g>, I am going to be sorely disappointed.

And Boston doesn't need to do anything to live out my promise that the Marlins don't win anything this year.  I think after winning two WS in the past four years Boston has earned the right to have an off year (even though they are one of the top teams in the league right now).
