Parcells says the Dolphins now are a much better Team then The 1993 Pats were:

MIAMI — The Dolphins are coming off the most miserable of their 42 seasons.

But this should cheer you up, Dolfans.

Bill Parcells said he has taken over worse. And he guided that team to an AFC championship within four years.

“New England was worse,” Parcells said in an interview with The Palm Beach Post while making a promotional appearance for Gatorade Tiger today in Bayfront Park. “New England was in terrible shape.”

Parcells became the Patriots’ head coach in 1993, a year after they went 2-14. There was ownership turmoil. The roster was dilapidated. Their best quarterback was Hugh Millen (eight TDs, 10 interceptions). Their top rusher was Jon Vaughn (451 yards).

The Patriots improved only to 5-11, but in Parcells’ second season he brought them to the playoffs for the first time in eight years. He got them into the Super Bowl after the ‘96 campaign.

The only man ever to coach four franchises into the postseason said these Dolphins compare more favorably to the Jets he joined in 1997.

“The Jets were a little bit better than the Patriots, even though their record was 1-15,” Parcells said. “They were a little bit better personnel-wise. I would say the Jets have more in common with this situation.”

The Jets improved from their one-victory season to 9-7 and then to 12-4.

I’m guessing Dolfans would accept that, but Parcells is making no guarantees.

“I hope it’s improved,” he said. “We’re all hoping it’s improved. We do things that we hope will enable us to get better.

“I don’t know how that’s going to be reflected in a record, but you’ll know if the team is better just on how it plays. If the team plays better than it did last year … sometimes you still can lose.”
