Title: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: jtex316 on June 13, 2008, 12:28:39 am I have two powerful, hatred-laced rants tonight
1. Recession - the next person that uses this word to describe the current US economical situation is going to get punched in the face. Do you people even know what you're talking about? No, you don't. This has nothing to do with politics - I don't give a shit about politics or if the country is ready for Barack Obama - WE ARE NOT IN A RECESSION!!!! It's not even close. It's a period of "slow-growth" in the economy - NOT A RECESSION. A recession is when the economy's level of growth is in the red for two consecutive periods of time (months, normally). This has NOT happened - we are still growing, albeit at a much smaller pace than this time in 2007. We had a recession in 2000, but if you lived in Florida, you didn't feel it, as Florida was the only state that was not very much affected by it. And for those of you who like being over-dramatic, a depression is a very severe recession, like in 1929. And no, that is not happening either. Just because gas is over $4 / G and everyone's homes are worth less doesn't make it a recession. Where is it profitable now? Online. This is why Dave's business is booming - well, Dave offers good services and customer service as well I am sure - but from a business standpoint, it is FAR cheaper to do business and to advetise online - and I mean FAR cheaper than TV, Radio, or Print. People are only now starting to figure this out, something we've know for many years now. It helps when people scream "recession". So stop calling it a recession until we are actually in a recession, please. 2. Massachusetts - for a number of reasons, I hate the entire state, population, and geographical location of the entire state of Masschusetts. I don't have to justify this to you or anyone else, but here's why: A. It's a "commonwealth", not a "state" - Fuck you. Why aren't you called a state like everyone else, you pompous pieces of crap? OoOoOo...we let our "people" govern our state...I've got news for you, your state sucks. Get out of our country and move to Canada. B. It's the size of my cell phone - really. C. It's cold as shit there, always - I just saw a picture of a game at Fenway Park, and everyone is wearing jackets and warm hoodies (this is in the middle of June). WTF? D. Everyone is not from ireland - Okay, you have a really large irish population there. This doesn't mean all of you jackasses have to talk like you're drunks and be loudly obnoxious. Have you ever met 1 person from this state who isn't a loud-mouthed, annoying asshole? E. Sports Teams - Hate Hate HATE your sports teams. Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics (especially these assholes), Boston College, etc. Everyone in Florida is all of a sudden from "New England" (again, stop referring yourselves as an area of "region" of the country) and everyone all of a sudden likes the Celtics and the Red Sox and is talking with fake Boston accents. You people claim you're the "working man's" sports fan (vs. New York Yankees fans who are the "assholes"), but I'm here to tell you that you are all full of shit. And no I don't like the Yankees or baseball. F. Everyone won't shut the fuck up, ever - have you ever met someone from Boston who is a quiet, reserved, and not basically a loudmouth? Neither have I. What the hell is going on up there? Shut the fuck up, you don't know everything. G. Puerto Rico is much cooler and deserves to be a state much more than Massasasasasasasaschusetts - Can we make an appeal to the US Senate and house of representatives to trade MA for PR? We wouldn't have to add or remove stars from the flag - we're simply allowing them to be their own country, or merge with Canada. H. Massachusetts is a stupid name. Period. I. Cape Cod sucks (I've personally been there - it sucks) J. Go to hell It's late and I'm pissed at everyone right now. F you all. Thank you very much. :) Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: run_to_win on June 13, 2008, 02:01:42 am Top notch rant on the "recession"!
Have you ever met 1 person from this state who isn't a loud-mouthed, annoying asshole? You can eat a dick.
Rant: Joe Tex 1. Just because you're not proud of where you come from doesn't mean that other people can't be. I would also like to point out for the record, that you spent a significant part of your childhood living in Fall River, MA. 2. One of those "Loud mouthed assholes" has ensured the following: a. You had your first Christmas/Thanksgiving in years complete with me waking up at 6 AM to get a turkey in the oven after it had been brining for 48 hours AND spending 3 days decorating the apartment. b. You had a birthday party (which another loud moth asshole drove about an hour to attend when she probably should have been resting for her surgery) complete with NY Giants Themed decor right down to red and blue toothpicks. c. There is a hot meal waiting for you almost every night when you come back from school/running/moping in your room...and on top of that, you bitch about it in your "best" Gordon Ramsay voice calling it rubbish when you should be saying "Thanks Katie." d. And speaking of Gordon Ramsay, you think Fau would have come up with the idea on his own to take you to his restaurant on his own because you're his biggest fan.? PLEASE. By the way, that shit wasn't cheap and you couldn't even suck it up on his birthday less then a month later and come out to a lousy Chinese place to help him celebrate. Real fucking nice. 3. You have never EVER once said thank you to the aforementioned 4. You threaten to kill my cat (who weights approximately 5 pounds and is the best cat EVER) on a daily basis for simply being a cat. He spills WATER which doesn't stain anything BTW and you scream at him like he just knocked over an irreplaceable piece of history or pissed on your bed (which I should train him to do). 5. Fuck you. Next time you rant about a generalized population, don't forget to take the time and think about who you're talking about. And on a personal note, your little attempt at humor is the most offended I have ever been by someone who is as close to my family as you can get. Next time you wonder why you don't have a girlfriend, take a long, hard look at how you treat the people that have done nothing but look out for you and get back to me. I will now resume my day knowing that I am nothing more then a loud mouthed, drunken asshole who doesn't know how to shut the fuck up in my hoodie and stupid accent. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Sunstroke on June 17, 2008, 11:26:13 am ^^^ I <heart> BoSoxGrl On #4... This actually happened to me. I love animals and grew up with cats and a dog. I was 21, living in my own place and found an abandoned Maine Coon kitten. She was adorable. Anyway, a friend needed a place to live and I had a two bedroom apartment so I took him in. He was one of those people that 'hated' cats and was very mean to her. One day I came home in time to watch him literally kick her out of the way as he walked to the fridge. The next actions on my part are a bit of a blur, but I do remember my heel flying out and connecting with his nose and breaking it. As he packed his belongings (and bled) I calmly explained to him that my cat couldn't kick him back. So I did it for her. You guys need to chillax and not take his ranting so seriously. Oh come on Dave, while i'm not all that bothered by his opinion on people from particular parts of America, you can't expect something like that to be posted and NOT receive a bit of a backlash? Or for someone from/connected to the state mentioned to just laugh it off "because its Jtex and its okay", or because "its only a message board"? Come on man... Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Phishfan on June 17, 2008, 08:30:10 pm I agree with Jeno. Reading the response it got from someone very close to Joe this goes deeper than just a message board rant. This actually seems to be his natural disposition (unless this is a huge Internet scam).
My dad was at a convention or some kind of business metting once and a group of guys started in with the West Virginia jokes. My dad calmly looked at them and got all their attention and asked "What is black, blue and red rolling on the floor?" Natural reaction was "what?" so he finished with "the next son of a bitch who tells another West Virginia joke." He was taken seriously and rightfully so as I have no doubt he would have taken it to the street if needed. People take great pride in where they are from and to make sweeping genralizations is dangerous, especially when you are close to someone. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Brian Fein on June 17, 2008, 08:39:29 pm I can see how Joe can take his hatred to the extreme to include sweeping generalizations, however, what he doesn't add is that he doesn't consider BoSoxGrl and SportsChick to be "massachusians" or whatever the heck they call you. He, in all likelihood, left you guys out of his rant.
Not that I'm supporting him, but I'm 100% certain that he didn't target you two (or anyone else in particular) in his rant. He probably ran across some arrogant a-hole at school, the grocery store, wherever, who was saying how great the Celtics are, and how awesome the Patriots are, blah blah blah, and decided it was time to rant about how that one jack-off represents EVERY SINGLE PERSON from Massachusetts. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Dave Gray on June 18, 2008, 12:52:53 am JTex watched the Celtics win game 4, got pissed at the perception that Boston is the best thing ever, and let off some steam.
I don't think it's much more than that. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: BoSoxGrl on June 18, 2008, 08:46:36 am Oh, I understand completely why he decided to let off some steam. But just imagine the thing you are most proud of...your marriage, your kids, the place you are from...and then just imagine someone who is like a brother to you going onto a public forum and completely slamming it because he has to act like a child throwing a tantrum when their dad doesn't buy them a toy in order to express himself.
Being from New England isn't something I am trying to be. It is simply who I am. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Dave Gray on June 18, 2008, 01:48:59 pm Being from New England isn't something I am trying to be. It is simply who I am. Not really. You are not "being from New England." It's just where you lived. It isn't your identity, unless you make it that way. This doesn't bother me, per se, but I understand why it irritates people. Think of people from other countries who make their nationality their identity. -- The Puerto Rican guy who wears Puerto Rican flag shirts and stuff all the time, when he lives in the US. ...or the blindly-patriotic American. It's nationalism. It's kinda the same thing on a smaller scale. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: BoSoxGrl on June 18, 2008, 02:05:17 pm You make a good point, but it isn't going to change how I feel.
It's like I was trying to explain to Joe and Fau just the other day when both the sox and the celtics were playing games in Boston. The celtics were obviously in the playoffs and the sox were playing just a regular season game. Growing up down in South Florida for the majority of their lives, neither of them could wrap their head around both events being completely sold out. "Us People" are extremely proud of being New England...and there is nothing like being from the "cell phone sized" area of the country where the rest of it began. If you want to call it nationalism or whatever, cool. But to me, being from New England is as much a part of who I am as is my sense of humor or my hair color. It is the thing I am the most proud of. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: SportsChick on June 18, 2008, 02:18:42 pm Growing up in MA (and most of New England) is an identity. This is one of the best parts about living in Boston I think. I wouldnt want it any other way! Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: fyo on June 19, 2008, 04:48:19 am G. I'd just like to point out that Puerto Rico doesn't WANT to be a state. They've had 3 referendums on it in the past 3 decades and all have rejected statehood (not that a positive outcome would have automatically made them a state, that would be for congress to decide). Puerto Rico is a bit of an odd place in political terms. It's extremely divided in terms of what future people want with respect to the (rest of the) US. No one is really happy with the status quo, but without a clear majority in favor of SOMETHING, nothing is likely to happen. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Spider-Dan on June 21, 2008, 04:09:48 pm It's not a recession, it's a correction!
Correction: it's a recession. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: run_to_win on June 21, 2008, 06:43:59 pm It's not a recession, it's a correction! Sure.... if you want to redefine "recession".Correction: it's a recession. 1. Recession - Do you people even know what you're talking about? Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Dave Gray on June 21, 2008, 09:12:29 pm Whether or not we're in a recession right now is speculative. You don't know until after it's happened. We'll know after the data comes in.
We may very well be in a recession. We may not. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: StL FinFan on June 23, 2008, 12:43:19 pm I'm jumping into this a little late, but BoSoxGirl, I completely get where you are coming from. I get really annoyed when someone from either coast makes a sweeping generalization about the middle of the country, like the entire interior is nothing but a bunch of hicks. I love my hometown and would never want to live anywhere else, so when people put it down, I take it personally. Rock on babe!

Many people who have spent their entire lives in the city feel that way. It wasn't long ago that a college-educated professional man told me the Eastern Washington would basically die without Western Washington support as "EVERYTHING" they have comes through our ports. Apparently he doesn't know the Mariner-BoSox Highway (I-90) moves freight in both directions.During the controversy surrounding the 2000 election a young employee actually asked why the votes of rural voters even count. The "if your were really that smart you'd be living in a big city on the coast" atitude is alive and well. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: MaineDolFan on June 23, 2008, 02:03:37 pm Maine is like that, the northern part of the state is poorly funded, poorly educated. Maine's unemployment is at 5.5% right now. If you cut Maine at the line where Augusta is and make the top half of the state vanish the unemployment rate would actually be 1.8% - a huge dip.
Because of this the vast assumption is that people from 'the county' are a bunch of stupid hicks that can't get out of their own way. Not the case. The reason the unemployment is higher is because northern Maine relied forever on industry (mills, etc) and has had a tougher time reinventing itself. The fact that the unemployment rate in that part of the state isn't 10% is testimony that the northern part IS making headway and has decent leadership. Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: BoSoxGrl on June 24, 2008, 09:49:58 am I think this is a similar situation with Florida where the powers that be are even kicking around the idea of splitting the state in two. South Florida has both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale raking in tourist $$ while the northern part has Daytona and (I could be wrong on this one) Orlando.
Title: Re: Two rants: Recession and Massachusetts Post by: Phishfan on June 24, 2008, 10:28:07 am Orlando is too removed from what I consider North Florida. We are basically the central part of the state. I don't think Tampa, Orlando, or even Daytona relate to North Florida any more than people around Miami.
