Title: With 3 marriage proposals in the last month...
Post by: Lee on June 16, 2008, 10:21:36 am
It seems fitting to start a thread on how you proposed to your wife/fiance.

Some ideas you cover could be:

1.  How long you were dating?
2.  Why did you propose now?
3.  How did you propose?
4.  What did you plan?
5.  Why did you choose the way you proposed?
6.  How long did it take you to come up with the plan?
7.  If your proposal turned out differently than you had hoped, what happened and how did you improvise?

1 - just about 1 year
2 - it was the natural progression
3 - got on a knee and asked (and i had bling)
4 - well she knew it was coming, but i was going to pre-empt it by  few days but the jewelers were delayed so the element of surprize was ruined.
5 - just the way i am
6 - a few weeks of deliberation
7 - already covered that

Mrs. Maine and I took a very 'off the beaten path' route (in today's standards) to dating.  We actually went on five or six dates before we even kissed.  I think it was a couple months in before we spent a night together.  We were together for a year before we moved in together.  I proposed around the two year mark and then we were married at the three year mark.

Proposal:  we took a weekend and went skiing in the White Mountains of N.H.  We rented this very cool little cabin that had a hot tub inside and another outside.  After a day on the slopes we decided to hit the hot tub.  I had been carrying the ring around for a while and waiting for a good time.  What better time than this?  It was about 20 degrees outside and every star in the sky was out along with a very bright 3/4 moon.  The snow was reflecting off the moon as we walked to the hot tub.  I stopped, turned around, took the ring out of my robe's pocket and got on one knee.  She said 'yes' and we then I popped the champage that I had hid next to the hot tub.

Wow, I was hoping for more of a "story" ...  Ease off of the PHP Fau!

Seriously!!! I was there and hoping for more!!!

Here's how it went down:

We started talking about getting married and we went looking for bling shortly after.  The wedding plans were well under way when the ring finally made an appearance.  Anyways, as Fau said, I had an idea when it would be in, and it apprently was supposed to be in earlier then that so I would have been suprised but there were some delays and it came in when I expected it to.  That morning we took a drive up A1A and picked it up...we got home, he gave me his little speech pre-empted with something like "I know you know what is coming, but I only get one shot to do this the right way so...." then he got on one knee.

OH!  And here's our webpage.  The Password is FENWAY if you wnat to sign the guestbook:  http://www.theknot.com/ourwedding/KatieLelek&FaustoTeixeira

I am not a traditional wedding guy.

I'm not religious, so the ceremony part of it means zilch.  I also am very honest and straightforward, so it's not like I'm going to be any different as a husband.  ...and we already live together.  To me, we're already married.  But to her, we're not, so it was just a matter of giving her what she wanted.

The whole concept of engagement was too big for me.  The guest list, the money, the whole thing -- so I just forgot all about that stuff and broke it into attainable goals: 1) Get a ring.  2) Ask her brothers. 3) Ask her. 4) Then worry about the rest.

So, I bought a ring -- which in itself was a big pain in the ass, because I'm "against" diamond mining in its current form.  So, I had to find something that worked for me.  Once that was done, the rest sorta fell into place.

It was her end of school year, so we went out to dinner.  I conveniently chose a place next door to the bench where we spent a lot of time on our first date.  So, we had dinner, and then we walked over to the bench, she sat down, and I did it there.

She had no idea, and just kept saying "Oh my God" over and over.

Then she called all her friends and they sounded like the Taliban on the other end of the phone line.

1.  How long you were dating?
I think dating sucks. Someone prove me wrong.

2.  Why did you propose now?
Proposing is Gay. I hate "down-on-one-knee" propositions. Go back to 400 B.C.

3.  How did you propose?
Seriously, if you just "sprung it on her", you're rolling the dice my friends. You better have a plan.

4.  What did you plan?
Recommended: a Round-table discussion at your attorney's offices

5.  Why did you choose the way you proposed?
Because you're stuck in the British Empire of the 1200's where knights and fire-tipped arrows ruled the world.

6.  How long did it take you to come up with the plan?
Should have been quick: 1-800-PRENUPP (The last "P" is for "Protection", because you will surely need it).

7.  If your proposal turned out differently than you had hoped, what happened and how did you improvise
My goal in life is to watch some assclown get down on one knee, read the stupid paragraph of poetry that he wrote while holding her hand and looking into her soul, and ask in the most romantic way "Will you marry me?", only to have the girl be like "No". How awesome would that be?

No Joe.  Dating sucks for you because your idea of a "swell time" is inviting her over to play Rock band.

What are you going to fight over in the divorce?  Your awesome "guitar" collection,  Your geo tracker, and your Giants memoribilia?  I assure you, there will be no argument

1.  We had only been dating for three months, but sometimes you know in your gut that she's the one.  She was definitely the one.

2. Because we had set a tentative date for our wedding and had already begun preliminary plans.

3.  I did the old fashioned down-on-one-knee proposal.  I first asked her dad for permission.  Contrary to the opinion of a famous TDMMC ranter, chivalry is not dead.

4. I wanted to propose to her at the end of the Young Adult service at our church, but she kept dropping hints that it better be private and romantic.  So before the service started, I took her to a small waterfall in the gazebo at my church and proposed there.

5.  See #4.

6. Not very long.  One of the pastors suggested the spot.

7.  No need to answer this, as the proposal went off without a hitch.  I will admit, she was very shaky for a while and it was all she could do to hold it together.  After all, this is a big moment in a girl's life.

Is "playing Rock Band" code for do you like a porn star? I was once invited over to a guys house to "fix his computer" and wound up bent over a desk.

I do always notice that the guys yelling about prenups the most own the least. Coincidence? I think not.

With that said, if a guy gets down on one knee to propose to me or asks my father first, I'm saying no. (Sorry, Fau. I can't marry you. I'm sure both you and BoSoxGrl are upset.) Any guy that would pull that shit on me clearly is not the right guy for me. What next? I take his last name? Ha ha ha.

We picked out my ring together beforehand and I did not take his last name.  Does that make me a rebel?

And sink.

And car.

And farm animals.

Just bent over in general.

Damn you, Buddha.  Some of us are trying to work here! ;)

I'm telling some of you non-local guys the truth when I say that when it comes to Buddha, her hotness spans many physical/mental levels.

And to get it back on topic... I will NEVER get married, so no worries about my joining in the wild matrimonial rumpus that seems to be going around lately.

My wife and I were both over 40 when we met.I was with my kids at the drive in movie and she was there with a girlfriend and her kids.I wasn't the least bit attracted to her but she said something in passing that stuck with me about how family was the most important thing. For some reason I couldn't get that outa my head.Well a month went by and I had figured that I would never see her again, when I was back at the drive in with my kids(a cheap way for dad to entertain them)when some stupid lady was sitting up her lawn chairs in front of my car,and it was her.We talked all night and exchanged phone numbers and spent the next month running my minutes into the ground(as much as I hate to talk on the phone!)The rest is,as they say, history.

Ours was an arranged marriage. My family had to pay a dowry to her family of three chickens, two goats, a donkey, and a bail of hay.

Ha. There really aren't too many more details to it. I tried to fix a computer and wound up bent over a desk. It was like something out of a bad porn movie. I have far more interesting stories than that one.

I like all different types of men. Generally, they don't care to follow societal norms, though. I usually attract men that are ok with that and understand where I'm coming from.

1.  How long you were dating?

I'm a guy. Am I supposed to remember?

The scary thing is... I'm half serious... I mean, I can work backwards and try to figure out roughly when it would've had to have been, but for the exact date, I'd have to check with my wife (there, gave away the ending).

OK, so doing the math... we got married (takes ring off and looks at date) about 5 years ago, so we'd been together for 4 years before the marriage... we were engaged about a year, so we'd been together 3 years when I popped the question.

She was caught completely by surprise. I did the traditional stuff. Didn't ask her dad, though... no poetry either. I was never in doubt about the answer. I knew she was the one for me less than a month after I met her. She took a bit more time, but I'd say within a year both of us knew that we wanted to get married someday, although it wasn't anything we really discussed. Sure, very vague hints were dropped every now and then, but I pretended to completely ignored them.

The proposal itself went off pretty much exactly as I had planned, except for one thing. I needed to get some champagne glasses at the last moment, which meant getting her out of her place, because that's where they were. I told her that I'd left something at the laundromat and asked if she'd go check for me (it was *very* close, took her all of 5 minutes). The request certainly confused her (why the f*ck didn't I go check myself), but since I'm not in the habit of asking her to do stuff for me, she figured I must've had a good reason (which I did, of course).

I did make one significant mistake: Because I proposed at my place and because she had no clue what was coming, she wasn't dressed for the occasion. That didn't bother me one bit and it certainly wasn't something that had even remotely entered into my mind. It did bother her, though, so with 20/20 hindsight, I probably should have taken her out first - or maybe invited her out, asked her to meet me at my place and then popped the question.

I'm actually not 100% sure she ever answered the question. I do remember a lot of crying, though.

We didn't live together until right before we got married. We spent a good portion of the 6 months leading up to our marriage trying to find a good place.

We started dating back in the summer of '99. I proposed 8 years later. I decided to propose after working in live news. I never saw her and I realized I wanted to live with her and be with her forever! So I proposed. I did it on the pier. I took her out for a day of fun and we "ended up" on the pier, well surprise surprise all our friends were there! I got up on a bench and among our friends and a bunch of fishermen who I think only spoke Portuguese I professed my love and gave her the ring. It was a great moment until this old couple came up to us and the wife said "That was beautiful, really, my grandson propsed in a similar way, he dies last week..." Awkward to say the least but it makes the story so much more interesting.

Congrats MUCPin!!

I dated my girl for about six months then we moved in together. We lived in sin (according to her mother) for two years.I then popped the question in a grocery store parking lot! No ring, no candles or anything else just walking across the lot headed in for the weekly supply of munchies. We got hitched a few weeks later at her church. The only ones there were us, her parents, her brother and sister. No  big deal. (ITs not the size of your ceremony its how you mean it!) We bought our wedding bands an hour before the ceremony,at the pawn shop! I gave her an engagement ring five years later for christmas. Its not how you do these things it's how real they are to you! FOR BETTER OR WORSE ,RICHER OR POORER ,IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH!,Twenty years and going strong!
