 GREEN BAY, Wis. - Brett Favre is considering coming out retirement, according to an ESPN report. ESPN's Chris Mortensen said Wednesday a Green Bay Packers source told him the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play.

The Packers' former quarterback retired March 6 after a 17-year career.

Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's NFL Live that Favre also made similar comments to him.

"I know he has the itch to come back and play," Harris said. "If he will or not, I don't know."

The Packers had planned to use Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback for the upcoming season.

"Aaron is our quarterback," Harris said. "Brett's retired. But if he wanted to come back, there would be some guys who wouldn't mind it. I would welcome him back with open arms."

Favre's commitment to retirement has been questioned since his announcement. That talk resumed in mid-June when Favre withdrew from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, scheduled for July 11-13.

Tournament spokesman Steve Griffith said then that Favre had to miss the event because of a scheduling conflict.

Favre is the NFL's only three-time MVP and leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He started 253 consecutive regular-season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275.

The real question is:  How far will the pieces of Joe's skull fly when his head explodes?

Michael Strahan is waiting for Favre to announce his comeback so that he can get some more cheap sacks.

I don't need to say anything that I haven't said since 1995. This guy is pure media whore. Everything else related to my opinion can be found in the archives.

As I was driving home tonight I heard on ESPN radio that Brett Favre is considering coming out of retirement and playing for the Packers again.I really think that Green Bay is a better team without him.Any thoughts?

The Packers will not get as far as they got last season with Aaron Rodgers or Brian Brohm calling the signals. 

That said, Brett Favre needs to give it up.  Why not become the QB coach??

Its not surprising to hear this. After 17 seasons, I'm sure its hard to just "walk away". I'm sure everyone knows an older person who people comment will "die the day after they retire" because work is all they know.

When it comes down to it, he stays retired.

He knew he didn't want to walk away 4 months ago. I have a problem with this because he's putting the organization in a compromising position. Green Bay has been preparing for his departure for the last 2 years and he pulls this. Aaron Rodgers is trying to establish himself as a team leader and a QB the team can rally around and know favre wants to come in on his white horse.

I wish Ted Thompson would grow a pair and tell him to hit the road, screw this PR nonsense. 1 man can't continue to compromise 52 others. The packers let him bow out gracefully, know they must proceed with their future.

I can't take another month of this attention whore and ESPN kissing his ass.

I doubt Favre would make a good coach. He's very intuitive and unconventional as a player. Not exactly someone you'd tell a young player to immitate.

Hey guys let's be realistic, Farve loves playing the media like a fiddle. He is doing this not because it's hard to walk away from the game, but because he is selfish and loves having the spot light on him. He has been doing this for years. Remember a few years ago, he was thinking about retiring or playing, so he called a news conference and at his news conference he announces he hasn't made a decision.
Farve has been holding the Packers hostage for years, he needs to grow up and let it go.

I would think that he's got the rest of his life to sit on his ass and go fishing.  These are the very last years that he can realistically and competitively still play football. 

If I were Aaron Rodgers, I'd demand a trade. 

I wouldn't be able to work like that if the guy I was stepping in to replace pulled shit like this every year.

My sentiments EXACTLY if Packers front office make a stand we don't get this far. This is political, they are afraid to take the PR hit from their fans & suspect that no Favre = less ticket sales. They will never grow a pair, cuz Favre walks on water up in Green Bay & he puts asses in seats. Aaron Rodgers, tell your agent to get on the phone & start talking to Baltimore or San Francisco.

I would take Aaron Rodgers in SF in a heartbeat...

And Tek...Last I heard, Green Bay has zero problems putting asses in seats (they have a waiting list for season tix that's over 80,000 people long), and Brett's leaving isn't going to change that. The Packers are the only game in town, and they'll pack the house, win or lose, every weekend.

Green Bay is the only publicly owned NFL franchise, so sometimes it's a bit hard to determine motivations. For any other NFL team, there is a huge incentive for the owner to keep a big star: Local merchandising sales. Unlike non-local sales, the franchises get to keep the profits from local sales without sharing them with everyone else.

I just read that he has requested his release from the Packers. This tells me he may already have something worked out with another team. Can we say tampering?

If he winds up in Tampa there is no god.
