Patriots give players rings for ‘perfect’ season

The Boston Globe writes that last Monday, in a private ceremony at Gillette Ceremony, owner Bob Kraft and president Jonathan Kraft presented their players with rings commemorating last year’s remarkable season — a 16-0 regular season, an AFC title and all sorts of new offensive records.

They sort of forgot to win the last game.

so they had the 43rd best season in the superbowl era .. yay .. rings !

Well do the 1984 Dolphins who broke all sorts off offensive records get a ring?  They forgot to win the last game too.   A real ring?  Not that phony one from the Ace Ventura movie?

I'd also like to pass out trophies to Phil Mickelson for all the majors he's come in second, most memorably the US Open where he managed to blow a two shot lead in the last hole and a half.  He lost, but he lead the first 71 holes, so he should get a trophy.

Then I'd like to see Sterling Marlin get awarded half a win and a little trophy for all the times he lead the most laps in 1986-1994 but didn't manage to win.

I'm sorry I have to go choke myself in the sink because I'm still laughing too hard.

Actually every AFC/NFC champ gets a ring.  Bears got rings last year.

However, typically it is not considered national news.

And the Patriots did have an undefeated regular season -- a pretty rare event. 

Only record they set that was offensive was their record of cheating in big games.  That was very offensive to a lot of us. 

But, whose season was more impressive...the 85 Bears, or the last Patriots season? I'm more impressed by the Bears.

And now the Patises are on a 3 game losing streak. I love it. ;D

85' Bears won the superbowl. 

I was referring to the '06 Bears who lost to the Colts in the SB.  They got rings too. 

I remember back in the 90s a lot of folks made fun of the Bills because they lost the sb 4x times in a row.  Even back then I thought it was dumb.  Four years in a row they won the AFCCG. I thought that was pretty impressive.  I was jealous too, my team was winning only a couple of games per year.  I didn't back then and I don't know view the team that loses the last game of the season as a bad team.   In 1990 the bills lost the SB, in 1990 the Pats lost every game but one.  Back then the Pats sucked and the Bills had one hell of a season.  Last year the Pats lost one game, only one game.  Something that had not been done in about 40 years.  I say they had a pretty awesome season, one that was much better than that of 30 other teams.

But back to the original point.  News Flash:  The AFC champions received their rings, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER AFC/NFC CHAMPION TEAM.  On the ring the team included the regular season record.   

But they lost the ONLY game that mattered

Which, then, brings us to the next point?

Why does everything that happens in Patriot-land have to make national news?  Trust me, we'd be just as happy not knowing every time Billy B wipes his ass.

Right.  Those are called "AFC Championship Rings" and they are awarded by the league to the team. 

These are "we're going to do a back flip and blow ourselves" rings that the Patriots made to ease the pain of choking in the biggest game of the season.

Not it wasn't the ONLY game that mattered.  Granted the week 17 game against the Giants didn't matter, but most of the Pats game did matter.  The need to win a bunch during the regular season to make the playoffs.  The game against Jax mattered, if they had lost that one they would not have gone to the AFCCG.  The AFCCG against the chargers mattered, if they lost that one they would not have gone to the SB.

The Dolphins lost 15 games that mattered (well maybe not all of the mattered by about week 10 they were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs so the games after that didn't really matter.)

It is vogue to make fun of the Pats.  I pretty sure when the bears got their rings last year it made page 5 of the sports section in Chicago and thats it.  This story belongs in the Boston papers not the palm beach ones.  Contact your local editors.   

Blah, blah, blah...the Miami Dolphins suck, yada, yada yada.  1-15 last year.  Not much better the year before.  Nothing to really speak of since 2001, really, and that wasn't much to write home about.

The Dolphins weren't expected to win much of anything outside of a high 1st round draft pick.  They certainly weren't a team that went into the Super Bowl undefeated and then blew it against a wild card team that barely made the playoffs.

Wanna talk more about the '07 Dolphins like it really matters to the gag job the Pats pulled?

Watch out, Tony.  None of that matters because Miami sucks!  LOL.

I am not saying the superbowl didn't matter.  I am not saying it is better to lose the sb than to win it.  But what I am saying is that the Patriots had a better season than 30 other teams.  A season that on 18 weeks brought me joy and fun.  A season in which I go to see them win more times then I ever got to see them win before, a season where I got celebrate tons of records being broken.  A season that all in all was really really great.  A season that i feel ought be celebrated by Pats fans and the team, not morned.  1990 was a season to forget, this one was not.

Hoodie how can a season filled with asterisks and cheating be something worth celebrating? Final point the 18 wins mean nothing without the SB ring, who is going to care in a few years besides Patriot fans? Maybe someday you will see this on jepordy or Trivia persuit.

It doesn't bother me if the Pats get rings for an undefeated regular season, but for the ring to say "16 - 0, Perfect Season" seems pretty lame.  The season is made up of all the games that count.  This would be the regular season and the post season.  The Pats didn't have a perfect season.

One question I have - was this a ring in addition to the AFC Championship ring?  Again, it's no skin off my nose; but do players really want a second ring that has no real meaning?

^^^ my understanding is that these are the AFC Championship rings.  I know that each team designs their own sb rings, and I assume it is the same case with the championship ring. 

If I was designing I don't think I would include the words "perfect season" but i definitely would have the 16-0 regular season record on the ring.

I don't disagree.  16-0 is a pretty amazing thing.  In this day and age people talk about how hard it is to sweep your divisional games, much less sweep the regular season.

My entire beef begins and ends with the "perfect" talk.  The season wasn't perfect.  But I don't contest celebrating the 16-0 mark what so ever.

Yeah........you can acomplish amazing things when you cheat.............. ::)

Weren't they busted for cheating week 1 AND for games before last season? Why would they still cheat during the season with a magnifying glass on them after Mangini outed them last year?

The better question is - why would they STOP cheating?  They just have to find better ways to hide it.

Why are people defending these assholes?  Tom Tom and the rest of the New England Dicksucks got what they had coming to them...plus a lot of teams have only won 1 game in a season, but only the Patriots have committed the biggest choke job in sports history.  Bill Buckner would be proud.  (insert evil laugh here) BWWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
