Title: AL Playoff breakdown Post by: MaineDolFan on September 18, 2008, 11:54:53 am After six head to head games against division leading Tampa Bay, three of which that were in Boston, the Red Sox only managed to win two. As Boston and Tampa conclude their 2008 regular season head to head, Boston trails the division by two games with ten to play. I think it's time for the Sox to conceed that division.
The AL Wild Card chase looks like this... Boston leads the wildcard by 7 over the Twins and 8 over the Yankees. They finish the season with three in Toronto and then home for four against Cleveland and three with the Yankees to close it out. Tampa has 12 games left. Four game set at home with the Twins, then they hit the road for four at Baltimore and four at Detroit. While the Twins are alive in a mathmatical sense for the wild card, it'll be awfully tough to make up seven games with only ten left. Along with the Rays series the Twins close the season by hosting the White Sox and then Royals. The Yankees also have 10 games remaining on their schedule and is even more of a long shot to overtake the wild card position. They close out their series with the White Sox tonight and then Baltimore comes to town for three. The Yanks hit the road to end their season in Toronto and then Boston. The AL Central is a contested division and will be interesting. The White Sox lead that division by 2.5 at current date and close the season by finishing their set tonight with the Yankees, three at KC, three at the Twins and then home for three with Cleveland. It's very possible that three game head to head with Minnesota will decide the AL Central champion. The AL West was decided roughly around April 21, 2008. Unless something very strange happens the Angels should go into the playoffs as the #1 seed and will draw the Wild Card winner. The AL East champion (assuming it will be the Rays) will open the ALDS against Chicago / Twins. My crystal ball forcasts the AL round 1 to look like this: Boston V. Anaheim, best of 5 Chicago V. Tampa Bay, best of 5 I'll take a look at the NL next...if anyone cares. Title: Re: AL Playoff breakdown Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on September 18, 2008, 11:57:40 am One question, Maine. How can you say it's gonna be a tough fight for the White Sox, but the Rays have the division when both teams hold a 2 game lead with 10 to go? Anything can happen.
Looking forward to your NL breakdown. Title: Re: AL Playoff breakdown Post by: MaineDolFan on September 18, 2008, 11:59:38 am Because the ChiSox and Twins have three games head to head. Tampa and Boston are done with their head to head and Boston trails by two.
Title: Re: AL Playoff breakdown Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on September 18, 2008, 12:03:09 pm Because the ChiSox and Twins have three games head to head. Tampa and Boston are done with their head to head and Boston trails by two. OK but the Rays can falter. A lot of their guys are hurt and worn out. They're not used to stepping it up this time of the year... the BoSox are. That could make the difference. I care :'( Title: Re: AL Playoff breakdown Post by: MaineDolFan on September 18, 2008, 03:50:46 pm ^ I didn't actually mean it like that - I didn't know if anyone cared either way about an AL or NL breakdown.
Sorry, didn't mean it like that... Sorry, didn't mean it like that... I'd love to see your NL Breakdown. Now hurry up and post it!!! :D Title: Re: AL Playoff breakdown Post by: Sunstroke on September 18, 2008, 04:15:25 pm Here's the NL breakdown... Marlins finish the season on an insane 18 game win streak (7 down, 11 to go) and shocks the entire league by slipping past the Brewers and Mets into the wild card. From there, Destiny steps up to the plate, taps the mud out of her cleats and gives the Marlins a ride to their third World Series title. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it's gonna happen. ;D Title: Re: AL Playoff breakdown Post by: MaineDolFan on September 18, 2008, 04:17:44 pm ^^Not totally unrealistic. Read my NL post.

The Angels probably will get the #1 seed, but the Rays are only 3 games back as the #2...I would love to see a Boston/Tampa playoff....I hope the Rays and Angels can inevitably meet in the playoffs...Tampa has had their number, I just hope they don't take any of these teams lightly...can't forget about the White Sox either...they are kind of under the radar right now. |
