I have never been a Yankee fan but as I watched the end of what will be the last game at the house that Ruth built,I couldn't help but get caught up in the history of the place,Lou Gehrig's speech,Babe Ruth,Mickey Mantle,Yogi jumping into the arms of Don Larsen,Reggie's 3 home runs,David Wells perfect game,love 'em or hate 'em,the Yankees have made a ton of baseball history in that stadium.Kinda sad to see it go...

Hopefully they'll take those monuments over to the new stadium. 

Has anyone seen what they are doing to season ticket holders because of this new stadium? It is a sham.

With so much history attached to a building, I just don't understand why they would tear it down? Very sad.

The charges for the new stadium are incredible. I love Real Sports with Bryan Gumble and they did a story on this recently. A season ticket holder for the Yankees (ever since you could buy World Series tickets for $15) spent $81K for his season tickets last year (I believe he has six seats). When they called him for a renewal this year the price was $810K.

It is sad.  I wonder what Maine, Sportschick, Pats, BoSoxGrl, and other Red Sox fans would think if they ever tore down Fenway Park to build the Red Sox a brand new stadium?

Damn.  They tore down the only stadium I ever knew and nobody worried so much about it.  You get over it.  Geez.

Our Arena was over 100 years old when they tore it down.  It was sad, but there is something to be said for a state of the art new arena or stadium.  That being said, I have a brick from the old Arena and a chunk of concrete from Busch Stadium II in a place of honor on my mantle.

There have been rumors (complete with blue prints) over the years about a new Fenway (which would have the same dimensions as the current Fens and would have a green monster) but when the current ownership bought the team, they decided they'd rather fix up and add seats to the current stadium.

I hated when they tore down the old Garden. The TD Banknorth Garden just isn't the same.

Are they going to implode the old Yankee stadium?  If so, is there any chance that they'll do it at full capacity?

I've only lived in NYC for a short time, but I'd take the people here over the South Florida bunch any day of the week.

it's ALL because of money.  that's it.  yankee stadium doesn't have those super fancy luxury boxes, and all steinbrenner cares about is the bottom line.

it's fine. it's only less than 40 years old.   fenway and wrigley are the only 2 comparable stadiums (because of the age/history), they're in shitty shape, yet they're so sacred they're not tearing them down any time soon.

I don't know what Fenway is like because I've never been there, but I can tell you Wrigley is a shit hole and should be torn down.

Busch Stadium II was exactly 40 years old when it was torn down to make a stadium with overall less seating but way more luxury boxes.  I like the new stadium, but like Tony said, it was all about the money.  The old stadium was fine.

The old stadium is a shithole. I love it because of it's history, but if you are talking about modern stadiums, it is one of the worst.

Money had as HUGE factor in building a new stadium, as did bribing politicians and abusing taxpayer money, but the new stadium will be better in almost every way... except price and A-Rod will play more games in it than Jeter.

I just wish they weren't going to tear down the old one. Money can be made from it with holding museum tours and concerts and whatnot.

I love sports as much as anyone,probably more,but the sad part is we can't pay teachers or cops or firefighters..........But- $800 mil for a new stadium?Sure!We got that.What a pitiful statement about our society,we can't invest in educating kids or keeping them safe,but we can spend obscene amounts of money to build a stage(that only wealthy corporate execs can afford to attend) for some guy whose only gift to society is that he can run or jump or throw a freaking ball.Sports are great,they give us an outlet and a temporary escape from our everyday lives,but we are slowly but surely turning them into religion to be worshiped by the highest bidder.Sad.

I agree with everything that landlocked is saying.  But the fact is that firefighters and teachers are not money makers like a professional sports franchise.  It does speak volumes about us as a society, entertainment over substance, but it's a demand and issue thing.

Exactly. No one goes to Beaver Stadium at Penn State to see a chess tournament, they see football. When that changes, then football players will make $35,000 a year and chess players will make $17 Million a year and date models.

Actually, Yankee Stadium is 85 years old. It's opening season was in 1923. However, I do believe money played a part in the decision to build the new stadium. I think it's tragic to destroy such an historic building.

DUH.  but no part of the original stadium is actually there.  it was virtually completely rebuild in the 70's.
