Title: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Phishfan on October 05, 2008, 12:16:24 pm This is a lyric in a song and it got me thinking. I have not seen a firefly in years. They were all over the place when I was a kid. Does anyone know what happened to them? Does anyone still see them? When was the last time you saw one? Does anyone care?

Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Brians Stalker on October 05, 2008, 03:34:53 pm All summer I have been wondering where the hell all of the fireflies came from! So to answer your question, they all moved to Mankato, MN. I can not believe how many of them there were this year.

I read something somewhere, maybe National Geographic this past Summer that firefly habitat world wide has been shrinking because of guess what? That's right, human encroachment and development. Hooray for our species. Yay!Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: StL FinFan on October 05, 2008, 07:00:19 pm The fireflies and alive and well here in Missouri during the summer.

Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: CF DolFan on October 06, 2008, 08:19:00 am There were tons in Ohio and Penn this past summer. My wife and I hadn't seen them in years and my kids had never seen them. They had a blast playing with them. They litterally looked like Christmas lights on the side of the raod while we were driving down the road just outside of Cleveland.
I don't know what they are not in Florida anymore but they are certainly alive and well farthur north. Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Brian Fein on October 06, 2008, 10:09:03 am I have never once seen a firefly in Florida.
Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: CF DolFan on October 06, 2008, 10:11:29 am I have never once seen a firefly in Florida. When I was kid in the 70's we played with them all the time. I don't know when they left. Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Buddhagirl on October 06, 2008, 10:20:53 am I have never once seen a firefly in Florida. Me neither. When we lived in Texas, there were tons of them. They kind of went with summer. I like fireflies. We used to catch them in jars when I was younger. Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: MaineDolFan on October 06, 2008, 11:04:11 am I never saw one in California...the only thing I saw lighting up the sky in East Oakland were AK's! ;) My grandparents lived in northern Maine, however, and the times we went there in the summer they were everywhere.
I live in the sticks now and this thread has me thinking...I didn't see one this season. Not one. Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on October 06, 2008, 12:21:25 pm I have never in my life seen a firefly.....well except for on TV.

Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Fred Finstoned on October 09, 2008, 10:07:00 pm Here in Florida we have killed them with the aerial spraying of the mosquito. They stopped this practice here in my county a few years ago and for the first couple of years it was crazy! I couldnt go out at night but, now the dragonflies and the bats are back. I have fewer mosquitos than when they we sprayed and for the first time in my daugthers 15 years she got to see one lonely firefly!
Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: StL FinFan on October 09, 2008, 10:10:00 pm ^ That is strange because we have the big mosquito spraying trucks come around and we still have fireflies. Maybe they use a different spray here.
Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Fred Finstoned on October 09, 2008, 10:40:09 pm Fog trucks only hit an area of about 5 to 30 feet around them depending on how fast they drive. They mainly control the bugs in your drainage ditches were the little blood suckers like to hang out. Aerial spraying on the other covers a greater area and kills every thing. Fog trucks help keep tax payers happy because they see and hear them. They do little to no good at all. I found this out through a buddy who use to work for mosquito control.
Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Frimp on October 09, 2008, 10:44:24 pm I've seen them in Florida. Mostly on 528 between Cocoa Beach and Orlando.
I see them all the time in South Carolina Title: Re: Where have all the fireflies gone? Post by: Phishfan on October 10, 2008, 08:18:06 am , now the dragonflies and the bats are back. I noticed this in my area also. I have seen many more of these than in the past. Yea bats! |
