Plaxico Burress' controversial year has just taken a turn for the worse.

The New York Giants wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the right thigh on Friday night, FOXSports.com has learned, not long after being ruled out of Sunday's game against the Redskins with a hamstring injury.

He spent the night in the hospital and the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The team is still trying to gather further information on the incident. Several media reports Saturday indicated the shooting took place in a nightclub.

Agreed, but ever since the giants gave him that big contract the guy has been out of control. Distractions like this can be the only thing that can keep the giants from repeating. Jerry Reese has proved his worth as an talent evaluator. I wouldn't be suprised if burress never plays another down for the giants again.

According to a breaking news story, he owned the gun illegally and brought it into the nightclub illegally.  The police are expected to arrest him in the next few days. 

The story also says carrying an illegal concealed weapon in the state of New York carries a MANDATORY minimum 3.5 year prison sentence.

Just heard during the Giants/Skins game that Plaxico will be charged with carrying an illegal firearm, will turn himself in Mon. morning, and surprise, surprise, will plead not guilty.

They have his teammate, Pierce, by the short and curlies. He apparently tried to hide the gun - and may in fact have it in his car (the police do not have the gun and have not yet served a warrant to search Pierce's car). Reports are that he is cooperating fully in exchange for not being charged *immediately*.

I can GUARANTEE you he is done with the Giants,and probably the NFL for awhile.Goodell has made a name for himself thusfar by coming down hard on thug behavior(pac-man) and he won't go easy on this.Having an unlicensed firearm in your possesion in New York is a felony,but idiot is a filthy rich athlete so don't expect prison time.

He'll go away for a while. It's painfully (pun intended) obvious that he broke the law.
If he does indeed do the minimum of 3.5, it'll probably be the end of his career.

The question is this - can he physically come back from this?

I don't see why he would not be able to make a full physical recovery.

Assuming all is true, he's violated laws designed to protect the public and the police from the gang bangers who look up to idiots like Plax. Its only luck that he didn't accidentally shoot another club patron instead of himself. Go directly to jail. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200.

It's been reported that he isn't even limping on it, and the video of him walking in cuffs today back that up. It had to have only grazed him...

Considering he waited HOURS to go to the hospital to get it checked out, it clearly wasn't all that bad.

Looks like Burress is suspended for the rest of the season and that appears to be the least of his worries! I don't understand why these athletes don't utilize the NFL. There are resources for protection like escorts who are licensed to carry weapons. Why risk everything?

What's funny about all of this, had he done this in the old west or even 40 years ago, he'd be laughed out of the room from now until his death because he shot himself getting his gun out and is anyone even sure why he pulled his weapon in the first place?

Okay, if I understand this right, Plexico needed the gun because he was going to a club in Manhattan and was wearing a lot of bling. So he puts a loaded gun in the pocket of his SWEAT PANTS

Agreed.  Beyond that, when you make the kind of scratch Burress does you could forgo the NFL altogether.  He makes enough to hire Mr. T and Chuck Norris at the same time.  Better use of that cash would be a bodyguard/lawyer to tell him how bad of an idea anything he does is and legal ramifications for shithead acts.  I blame Drew Rosenhaus.

The service is also confidential.  The guy who used to be the Titans GM and is now on ESPN said that when they started that stuff in the mid-90's players were afraid to use it because they thought it would affect their contract status if the GM knew about it. 

Then the GMs and the Union agreed to keep the services confidential so that the players would be able to protect themselves and not worry about such things.  I'm as pro-2nd amendment as anyone, but this is beyond stupidity.

His absence is really hurting this team.  Eli Manning had abysimal passing numbers against the Eagles.

Denver, you make some off the wall predictions at times, but you were dead accurate on this one.  Burress's absence has hurt this team big time. 

This is a ploy for Plaxico to get himself traded to the Cowboys!!  ;D
