The Patriots could still get in if the Ravens lose next week against the Jags.

should have mentioned, a jets win, and NE can't win the division, not out of the playoffs all together. a Ravens win next week and they are out.

So we could either be facing the Ravens or the pats in the playoffs. (if the jets win and we win next week)

as hoodie has pointed out in a different thread, you are still not correct.

Only if you are Donovan McNabb!

Jets win this week (or lose for that matter); Pats beat the Bills; Fin and Jets tie --> Patriots win division.

Tepop84, actually i am correct, see NY wins today and everyone is 10-5 after today ,

if NY wins next week against Miami, NY wins division with a 5-1 division record
if Miami wins next week, Miami wins the division with a better conference record than N.E.

If the Ravens win next week, Ravens win the last playoff spot

Believe me i know my stuff.

You are revealed, Spongepop.

I think in this case, use of all-caps was reasonable.

now the jets went from a team that controls their destiny to a team that needs help to get to the playoffs.

Can they get a Wild Card if we lose to them next week? (assuming the Patriots take the division)?

Mia win = Mia win div.

Jets win + Bills win = Jets win div

Jets win + Jax win + NE win = NE win div + Jets wc

Jax win + Mia win + NE win = NE wc

Whats the common games record between the Jets and Ravens?

Doesn't exist.  It goes to SOV.

Hoodie, tim graham from espn.com says the jets are eliminated from the wildcard b/c of tiebreakers w/ baltimore.

from NFL.com

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM

If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

   1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
   2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

Two Clubs

   1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
   2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
   3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
   4. Strength of victory.
   5. Strength of schedule.
   6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
   7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
   8. Best net points in conference games.
   9. Best net points in all games.
  10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  11. Coin toss.

Irrelevant. There are not enough common games (at least 4 required). For some reason, I can't think of when that rule would apply for non-division tie-breakers under the current scheduling scheme.

well the afc east and afc west would be able to use that. I think it is winning percentage in those games, so the jets would count twice for miami and sd would count twice for denver.

Right... but but then it only applies in the McNabb-case, i.e. in event of a tie. Otherwise, one of the teams would win in head-to-head.

With 3 or more teams, you could avoid the tie if they beat each other in turn (team 1 beats team 2, team 2 beats team 3, team 3 beats team 1).

He doesn't say which tie breaker.  Based on my calc and what I have read elsewhere before the game, I think he is wrong, but he might be right.

I think he is wrong too.  If baltimore loses next week and NYJ win, the jets would be 8-4 in the conference and Baltimore would be 7-5.

Common games for NYJ and BAL:

MIA (x2 for NYJ)
CIN (x2 for BAL)
TEN
OAK

Currently, NYJ is 3-1, BAL is 4-1.  If NYJ loses, they would be 3-2 in common games.

It is literally impossible for any two teams in the same conference not to have at least 4 common games (and not play each other head-to-head).  (Under the old East/Central/West scheduling system, it was possible.)  For example, take MIA this year:

- every team in AFCS/AFCN played a team in AFCE, so that's +2 games for MIA, +1 game for the other team (2/1)
- MIA played a team in AFCS/AFCN, so that's +1 game for MIA, +2 games for the other team (3/3)
- every team in AFCS/AFCN played a team in AFCW that MIA also played, so that's +1 for both (4/4)
- MIA played another team from AFCS/AFCN that the competing team played in an interdivisional matchup (like us with AFCW this year), so that's +1 for both (5/5)

Cutting you off right there.  If NYJ loses they would be 9-7 and Bal would be atleast 10-6.
