Title: ESPN: Parcells Probably Not Opting Out
Post by: SCFinfan on January 04, 2009, 07:07:22 pm
Apparently, there's been discussions between Huizenga and Parcells. My guess, from what the report tells us, is that Parcells looked Huizenga in the eye and told him he wasn't going anywhere.

I hope it's correct, but after the Nick Saban debacle, who can trust Huizenga's judgment in this area?

I despise H. Wayne Huizenga, which makes me glad he's selling the team.  But I agree with the sentiment, and I think most Dolphins fans agree.

Parcells knows he has this team on the right track, but his work here is far from finished.  All he wanted was to build the team and run it his way.  Let the marketing guys do the sales and promoting and handling the stadium events, but any decision regarding players or coaches is totally up to him and no one else.  I'm willing to bet Ross gave him that assurance.

Does anyone think that Ross would be capable of hiring Peterson over Parcells?

An uneasy feeling -- [Newsy update here]

This morning I filed the post the follows below. But I have an update.

I have confirmed that former Kansas City president and general manager Carl Peterson was at the Dolphins game Sunday. The fact, first reported by profootballtalk.com, makes me wonder what is really going to happen with these Dolphins in the coming days.

Peterson, I am told, was not only cozying up to incoming owner Stephen Ross during the playoff game against Baltimore, he was on the Miami sideline with Ross prior to the game. And get this: He was wearing a Dolphins pin on his lapel.

And he was overheard talking about the Dolphins as, "We." and "We're." So it sounds like Peterson believes he's going to soon be part of the Dolphins organization in some capacity. Ross and Peterson go back 25 years. Peterson was the general manager of the USFL's Philadelphia Stars and Ross was the team's general manager.

All this leads me to wonder, how can Ross bring in Peterson and keep Bill Parcells? It would have to happen only if Peterson comes in exclusively on the business side.

Anyway, here's the text of the post I put on the blog early this morning....

At least if that happens, it'll be Stephen Ross to blame, and not Bill Parcells.

Then it'll be status quo for the Dolphins: asshole in ownership.

But why assume just because Ross and Peterson are close that he'll push out Bill Parcells?  Would Ross happily forget that Peterson ran the Chefs (great googly moogly) into the ground?

The Carl Peterson story was reported by PFT?   Then you need to take that story with a grain of salt, Nextseason.

I heard that Jimmy Buffett was at the game as well...and now I'm worried that the Dolphins might relocate to Margaritaville in the offseason.

Or maybe not...

Apparently Ross and Peterson have known each other for quite some time..... but bringing in Peterson wouldn't interfere with Parcells job.  Instead, Bryan Weidmeyer and Joe Bailey should be the ones shaking in their boots.

at first i was like eh, this is nothing that we already didn't know when parcells first came to miami. everyone knew the team was being sold, and everyone was ok with it. seemed like a non-story at this point...

now we find out that coincidentally carl "run an organization into the ground" peterson and this new owner are best buds, and he was hanging out, being very visible on the game on sunday!!! this can't sit too well with parcells at all, and the silence on setting the record straight coming from his camp is quite telling.

this just doesn't smell right, and i am starting to prepare myself for the worse news that we could ever get. good grief this freaking organization must be cursed.

I'll believe Parcell's is not opting out when two things happen.

1:  I hear it from his mouth

2: The deadline for him opting out has past.

Until then.  I see no reason for him to not opt out & try to land another deal with Ross.

Him opting out will have nothing to do with him wanting to leave Miami, just makes good business sense.   He can land 4 years pay for one, then sign a 3 year deal with Ross for another 9 million & walk out of Miami in 3 years with 21 million instead of 12.

Hyde writes a good piece on Ross taking a few bad first steps.

All the Peterson speculation can be put to rest, he is not going to be part of the Dolphins organization.

Former Chiefs GM Peterson not headed for Miami
By DOUG TUCKER, AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Former Kansas City Chiefs boss Carl Peterson says he is not taking a job with Miami, ending speculation that began when he was seen at the Dolphins’ playoff loss last Sunday.

“It’s not going to happen,” Peterson told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “I have a lot of good friends there, but I need to get away for a while. It’s been 20 years of making decisions every day and I need a rest.”

Peterson resigned on Dec. 15 after a 20-year run as president, general manager and CEO of the Chiefs and is a good friend of Stephen M. Ross, who is buying the Dolphins.

In a 40-minute farewell speech to friends and Chiefs staff Tuesday, Peterson said he does not intend to retire. Afterward, he declined to address whether he had plans to work for the Dolphins and said that heading to Miami was “pure speculation and I don’t deal in speculation.”

Ross’s purchase of the Dolphins from Wayne Huizenga is expected to conclude soon. Ross owned the highly successful USFL team that Peterson ran, and the two have remained close.

Peterson is also close to Jeff Ireland, the Dolphins general manager who got his start in the NFL as a Chiefs scout under Peterson.

“I have a 25-year friendship with Stephen Ross,” Peterson told the AP. “But I have no plans to do anything right now but rest.”

There has also been speculation about the future of Dolphins boss Bill Parcells, whose regime produced the turnaround that resulted in the franchise’s first playoff berth in seven years. His contract allows him to leave the Dolphins and still collect the $9-12 million remaining on the four-year deal if the team is sold.

But following Sunday’s loss to Baltimore, Huizenga said Parcells told him he plans to remain executive vice president of football operations. Ross has said he wants Parcells to stay.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is interviewing candidates to replace Peterson, who won four AFC West titles and had three 13-win seasons with the Chiefs. Hunt has spoken with New England Patriots executive Scott Pioli, among others, and is paring down a lengthy list of candidates.

AP Sports Writer Steven Wine in Miami contributed to this report.

what this doesn't do is shut the door on any of the parcells bolting speculation. this peterson story may make the owner look even stupider than originally thought.

why bring in peterson to pal around when you aren't going to hire him and very well know that has to ruffle parcells' feathers??

Why the f*ck would it ruffle Parcells' feathers? It's not like he's afraid he's going to get tossed out. He has perfect job security. If he leaves, it'll be HIS choice. There's no way Ross is looking to get rid of Parcells.

Personally, I don't think Parcells will leave. It's not that he couldn't or that he has some kind of loyalty. It's simply a matter of business. Parcells wants to be seen as someone who can come in and turn a franchise around in short order and, crucially for the owner, dramatically increase the value of the franchise. In order to keep being seen as having that kind of ability, he needs to really turn the Dolphins around. One year is simply not enough. If Parcells left and the Dolphins crashed next year, he wouldn't get nearly the credit he is getting now. A lot of people would point to Brady's injury, Brett's late season collapse and the Dolphins' insanely easy schedule.

For much the same reason, he wouldn't just be able to take a lot of "his" people with him if he left now. That kind of disloyalty would dramatically diminish his value to other owners, since they would be afraid he'd do the same to them.

Don't kid yourself ... while I agree that he would look disloyal and we would hate him ... if Parcells were to leave when the sale goes through, teams would be lining up to suck him off.

That said, I'm hoping that he is wanting to stick it out and complete this turn around ... he's got everything he wants as long as Ross leaves him alone the way Wayne has. If Ross truly is a Phins fan then hopefully he is smart enough to know that Tuna can do the job better than he can. If he decides to leave after his contract is up in a couple of years then so be it ... I hope Ireland and Sparano stay.
