Title: "Mailing it in..."
Post by: Brian Fein on January 30, 2009, 04:27:23 pm
Do you know what it means if someone says "I'm mailing it in..."

Is that like "phoning it in"?   That means you're doing something half-assed or just enough to get by.

That's how I've always considered that phrase...not putting in full effort because full effort isn't required to get the job done.

The reason I ask is because I used that phrase at work about 3:30 today and half the people in my office looked at me like I had 3 heads.  Only one guy knew what I was talking about.

Come to find out the majority of people in the universe have no clue what it means to "mail it in" and have never heard that phrase before.

Am I the crazy one?

It is not a phrase I hear a lot.  So while I know what it means, it does not surprise me that a lot of folks would not.

It's the phrase that got me thrown off a photoshop messageboard...I got tired of putting work into contests, and having people mail it in,throwing shit together.....

It's a common phrase around these parts,as Stl pointed out phoning it in

It can mean doing something half-assed and not putting forth enough effort.  It can also mean quitting your job without notice.

I've heard that phrase used for people who walk off the job, or No Show/No Call

I've heard of it. My boss and I use the other term, phoninig it in all the time. We do that when we throw some shit together to get a client off our backs.

Not sure how someone couldn't have heard that. It goes back. In fact, the best is if you ever stop and listen to some old music and you here the same phrases that are 'in' today.

I've heard of "phoning it in," which means to do an act with no real passion or intensity.  It's commonly used when talking about actors who are doing enough just to get by to collect a paycheck.

I've never heard of "mailing it in."  Is it the same?

yeah, its the same.  I've heard it mostly applied to sports, like when a team is down 24 points with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter and they pull the starters and give up.  They're mailing it in.
