Title: Tommy's 2009 Mock Draft v 1.0
Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on February 05, 2009, 01:38:01 pm
OK guys, it's time for the first annual TDMMC Mock Draft.  We'll do another one about halfway through free agency.  For the newbies this past year, this is a fun way to test your GM skills.  Here is the draft order for 2009:

1. Detroit (0-16)
2. St. Louis (2-14)
3. Kansas City (2-14)
4. Seattle (4-12)
5. Cleveland (4-12)
6. Cincinnati (4-11-1)
7. Oakland (5-11)
8. Jacksonville (5-11)
9. Green Bay (6-10)
10. San Francisco (7-9)
11. Buffalo (7-9)
12. Denver (8-8)
13. Washington (8-8)
14. New Orleans (8-8)
15. Houston (8-8)
16. San Diego (8-8)
17. New York Jets (9-7)
18. Chicago (9-7)
19. Tampa Bay (9-6)
20. Detroit (from Dallas) (9-7)
21. Philadelphia (9-6-1)
22. Minnesota (10-6)
23. New England (11-5)
24. Atlanta (11-5)
25. Miami (11-5)
26. Baltimore (11-5)
27. Indianapolis (12-4)
28. Philadelphia (from Carolina) (12-4)
29. New York Giants (12-4)
30. Tennessee (13-3)
31. Arizona (9-7)
32. Pittsburgh (12-4)

The rules for this draft are simple:

- Pick only one guy, then try to let about three or four picks go by before picking again.

- Try to explain why you picked the way you did.  Talk about what this player can do and how he fits into this team's needs

- Keep your eyes peeled.  Don't pick a guy who already has been picked, and don't let a top pick drop too far.

- No trading picks allowed.  While it will happen on draft day, it's too confusing in this situation.

That said......

WELCOME TO THE 2009 NFL DRAFT.  THE DETROIT LIONS ARE FIRST ON THE CLOCK!!!!

If I was the Lions GM, I would take the best D-lineman or linebacker on the board.

The Logic behind it is as follows:

In today's NFL, which the emphasis on passing and scoring, pass rush is the most important part of a defense.  The Lions defense was atrocious last season.  The offense, on the other hand, has some potential, with Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith.

The rebuilding for Detroit must begin with the defense, which means improving the pass rush.

With the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select.....

OT Eugene Monroe of Virginia.

The Lions were worse than bad last season.  They set the bar for historically awful.  It's time to tear this team down and rebuild from the bottom up.  You start that at quarterback and left tackle on offense.  With Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford opting to stay in school, neither of the top QB's (Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez) is worth a #1 pick, so the Lions decide to go for left tackle.  While Alabama's Andre Smith is an enticing pick, Monroe is a complete left tackle that has the size, strength, and agility to run block and pass protect.  Monroe worked his way into the starting lineup as a true freshman and has faced some fierce pass rushers playing in the ACC.

The St Louis Rams are now on the clock!!!

Too early for this... I'll set up the official site mock in mid-march.

Wouldn't it be fun to do one now and one in mid-march after free agency is well under way?

^^^^

Crabtree might be a good fit in the Rams high octane passing attack, but they've got other needs that are way more pressing.
