Title: 2009 TDMMC Mock Draft
Post by: Sunstroke on April 15, 2009, 10:43:56 pm
OK, it's 10 days from the NFL Draft, and after some interesting offseason moves around the league, the draft order is set and each team's needs are a little more clearly defined.

For "this" mock draft, I want participation from as many different board members as humanly possible. With that in mind, here are the rules of the Mock:

1) Once you have made a pick, you cannot make another pick for at least 5 selections. If you mock the Lions #1 overall, you cannot mock another team until #6. The only exception to this rule is me, and I'll only do it if the mock draft bogs down at all.

2) If you specifically want to mock for a certain team, send me a PM and let me know. I will put it in parentheses next to the team name below (see 49ers for example) so no one else accidentally mocks for that team.

3) Don't bother PM'ing me for the Dolphins pick... That selection goes to TDMMC CEO and President of Football Operations, Dave "Little Tuna" Gray.

4) When you make a selection, please put a sentence or two about why you think that team will select that player, or possibly even alternate players you think might go at that slot.

5) NO TRADES ;D

I will update the draft list in this post as frequently as possible...remember to double check to make sure the player you're going to select hasn't already been taken and that the team you're about to select for hasn't already been reserved.

With the 1st overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select.....

QB Matthew Stafford of Georgia

Detroit set the bar for historically awful last season, being the first team ever to go 0-16.  And they did it with five different starting QB's.  They have a LOT of holes to fill, but the way to rebuild a team starts at QB, left tackle, LB, and CB.  Therefore, they use the biggest prize in the draft on Stafford, a QB who has the height, arm strength, accuracy, and scrambling ability to make it in the NFL.

St Louis is now on the clock!!

With the #2 overall pick, the St. Louis Rams select OT Jason Smith, from Baylor.

St Louis desperately needs help at tackle, and this choice comes down to Smith from Baylor or Monroe from Virginia. The Rams make the right move by going with Jason Smith. I'm sure that Steven Jackson appreciates it anyway...

The Kansas City Chiefs are now on the clock!

With the #3 overall pick, the Kansas City Chiefs select LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forrest.

Kansas City struggled mightily on defense in 2008 so Aaron Curry makes sense for the Chiefs...he is a beast on the field and a class act off of the field...Curry will be the star of KC's defense for many, many years to come!

The Seattle Seahawks are now on the clock!

With the #4 overall pick, the Seattle Seahawks select OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia.

I think Pioli is going to grab Monroe to protect Cassel, but if the Seahawks get the chance, Monroe is a great fit for them. Their starting left tacke is 35 and coming off microfracture surgery. Sean Locklear could potentially fill the spot with recently signed Ray Willis taking over Locklear's right tackle position. Still, that would be a mediocre solution at best, while drafting Monroe could give them a Pro Bowl LT for years to come.

If Pioli pinches Monroe at #3, the obvious choice is Curry. Personally, I think there's a good a decent chance Stafford goes to the Rams, possibly resulting in Jason Smith being available. If so, Smith is a great match as well.

No way does Crabtree get picked here, as I've seen in some Mocks.

Wasn't a whole lot in mine either.  This used to be the bomb two years ago.  Why it's faded out now is beyond me.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm just not that psyched for the draft this year. Too many other things going on in my life.

With the 5th overall pick, the Cleveland Browns select Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech.

With the loss of Kellen Winslow, and the possible departure of Braylon Edwards, the Browns need to revamp on offense.  What better way then to take the number one WR in this draft.  The obvious pick would be Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas here, but if Crabtree is still on the board, I think the Browns have to take him.

The Cincinnati Bengals are now on the clock...

The Rams are actively trying to trade the second pick.

With the sixth pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Cincinatti Bengals select.....

OT Andre "ManCans" Smith of Alabama

Cincinatti is kicking themselves now that Michael Crabtree is off the board, but they turn to their biggest area of need.... the offensive line.  They finished 29th in the league in rushing and 30 in sacks allowed in 2008.  Despite Smith's absence at the Scouting Combine and his poor showing on his Pro Day workout, he is still a mauler and can pancake anyone who dares to get in his way.  Running the 40 shirtless hurt his draft stock a little, as two months ago, he was thought by some draft experts to go #1 overall.

Oakland is now on the clock!!!!

Eagles have traded the 28th pick of the first round (and more) to the Bills for LT Jason Peters.

With the 7th pick, the Oakland Raiders select DE/OLB Brian Orakpo, Texas.

I've seen a lot of different players mocked for Oakland at this slot, and if Crabtree is available, I'd bet big bucks that he'll be the choice. For this mock, it came down to a choice between Orakpo, Michael Johnson or BJ Raji, and I'm probably giving Oakland too much credit by assuming they'll get it right by taking Orakpo.

The Jacksonville Jaguars at #8 are on the clock...

With the 8th overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars select WR Jeremy Macklin, Missouri.

The Jags need help at the WR position and could use some explosiveness on offense.  Jeremy Macklin will bring big play potential to Jacksonville.  He will also make an impact on special teams returning kicks.

USC QB Marc Sanchez and DT BJ Raji were also considered here... QB Garrard took Jax to the playoffs 2 years ago(maybe they take a QB in 2,3, or later??) and they can grab a DT in round 2 or 3!!

The Green Bay Packers are now on the clock....

That pick is all yours.  Please feel free to jump on one or two before then though...don't feel like you have to save yourself. ;)

With the 9th pick in the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select NT BJ Raji, Boston College.

I think GB will look to anchor their NT slot before looking to add a second perimeter rusher. Tyson Jackson is a good possibility as well, but if given the choice between the two, I think this is GB's choice.

And, since  my beloved 49ers are on the clock, so am I... I've given a lot of thought to which players I want to see for the 49ers and Dolphins both in this draft, and I narrowed the 49ers down to 3 players that could make me happy at the 10 spot. If Brian Orakpo slides, I would love to see him on the outside with Patrick Willis on the inside as Singletary's new Beast-LB Patrol. In this draft, he's gone though, so it narrows it down to two. I would be happy with OT Michael Oher from Ole Miss, because I think he can develop into a very good LT, and Joe Staley really sucks at blindside pass protection and needs to move back to RT as soon as humanly possible. I'm not selecting a tackle here though, because I believe the 49ers can get a good tackle early in round two, and they have one other need that trumps the rest...

With the 10th pick in the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select QB Mark Sanchez, USC

I've seen everything I need to see to make me believe that he will be an outstanding NFL QB. He has good enough size, a strong enough arm to make all the throws, works well under center or in the gun, has a great head for reading defenses, has great leadership intangibles and character, and he has hands larger than an average five year old girl (sorry, Alex Smith...I couldn't help myself)

Mark Sanchez is a 49er...and there is much rejoicing in the Sunstroke household!

The Buffalo Bills at #11 are on the clock!

With the 11th pick in the NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select...a box of tissues.

The Buffalo Bills decision to draft a box of tissues will come as no surprise to the rest of the league.  After they lose their first few games, T.O. is going to need them for all the crying he'll be doing.

Seriously though...

With the 11th pick in the NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select Michael Oher, T, Mississippi

With the departure of Jason Peters, the Bills need someone to fill this void.  I had Andre Smith going here, but he's already been drafted in this mock.  Everyone can agree that tackle is the Bills greatest need, and even if they have to reach, they need a tackle in this spot.

The Denver Broncos are now on the clock

Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State

With the 13th pick of the draft, the Washington Redskins pick LSU DE Tyson Jackson.

The Washington Redskins would have loved to trade up to number 8 and grab USC QB Marc Sanchez but could not reach a deal.  So DE Tyson Jackson will be the pick for the Skins...Jackson is versatile and his stock is rising.  Good pick at #13!

The New Orleans Saints are now on the clock!!

With the 14th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the N'awlins 'Aints select....

RB Chris "Beanie" Wells of Ohio State

Getting rid of the oft injured Deuce McAllister was seen as a controversial move by a lot of people.  Reggie Bush doesn't have the size to be an every down back, and Pierre Thomas doesn't have the speed.  So the Saints get some more firepower on offense in drafting the best RB available.

The Houston Texans are now on the clock!!!!

With the 15th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select OLB Brian Cushing, USC.

Houston could go a number of different directions here, but I've heard lots of rumors of meetings between Cushing and the Texans in the last few weeks, and think about it from the Texans standpoint...a stud defensive trio of DE Mario Williams, ILB DeMeco Ryans and OLB Brian Cushing could be a pretty solid force.

The San Diego Chargers at #16 are on the clock!

All previous restrictions on picking are removed...please feel free to make any picks you'd like, except for the ones that are reserved. Hopefully we can step lively through the second half of the draft and get it all in before the real draft starts at 4 PM today.

With the 16th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Bolts select....

DE Everette Brown of Florida State

The Bolts managed to shore up their offense by re-signing Darren Sproles and giving LT a contract extension, so they turn their attention to defense.  Last year, their pass rush was non-existent with Shawne Merriman being sidelined for the season.  Brown is a guy who can play DE in a 4-3 scheme or OLB in a 3-4 and wreak havoc on opposing QB's.  Him playing opposite Merriman will make the Bolts pass rush a force to be reckoned with.

The stinkin, lousy Jets are now on the clock!!!!!!

With the 17th pick of the draft the NY Jets select, RB Knowshon Moreno Georgia

Thomas Jones is 31 years old and unhappy with his current contract...this will likely be Jones last season with the Jets, so a stud RB like Moreno makes sense for this pick.

WRs Harvin and Nicks were also considered here but Moreno was to good to pass up!!

The Denver Broncos are now on the clock!!!

Title: Re: 2009 TDMMC Mock Draft

With the #18 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select DE Aaron Maybin, Penn State University

Denver addressed their QB need with the first pick, so it came down to DE or NT for this pick. The next NT on my list (Ron Brace) would be a huge reach here, but Maybin is a solid value. Denver will look to round two for the interior of their D-line.

Tampa Bay at #19 is on the clock!

Title: Re: 2009 TDMMC Mock Draft
Post by: Rick on April 25, 2009, 01:07:04 pm
With the 19th pick of the 2009 NFL draft, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select DE Micheal Johnson Georgia Tech University

Tampa Bay could really use some help rushing the passer and on the defensive line...Micheal Johnson has the potential to put up big numbers for the Bucs...new coach Morris said D-line was their biggest area of need, so Johnson is the pick!!

The Detroit Lions are now on the clock!!!
