Title: Let's talk College Football!
Post by: JVides on August 14, 2009, 11:55:36 am
Who you rooting for?  What do you expect from your team this year?  Do you think you have a shot at the championship?

I'm a huge 'Canes fan, and am psyched for the new year.  I really like our QB, receivers, defensive line, and secondary, and am hopeful for the running backs and O-line.  Most of the productive players on this team seem like they are sophomores, so I expect a good, albeit inconsistent, year.  I'm guessing 9-3 is what I expect (I'm hoping to come out of the first 4 games no worse than 2-2), with a shot at the ACC title if things go down right.  I'm really hoping this team is like the 2000 'Canes, which took one loss to Washington, built up a head of steam, and became the dominant 2001 team anchored by Andre Johnson, Ed Reed, Clinton Portis, and all those guys.

I look at Jacory Harris and see a real college QB.
I watch Aldarius Johnson and LaRon Byrd and think, with luck, they could both be as dominant as Andre Johnson was.
I see Allen Bailey and Marcus Fortson and hope they're the next dominant set of UM D Tackles.
I watch Sean Spence run sideline to sideline and think of Jon Vilma (I dare not invoke Ray Lewis...let's not get crazy).

I hear stories of a nasty defense in camp, and of a return to a pro-style offense so potent Jacory Harris giggles when asked to describe it.

All in all, I see a team loaded with talent but short on depth, and am hopeful that this year's a stepping stone back to dominance.

Hate to disappoint you, but I'm pretty confident that my USF Bulls are going to put the beat down on your Canes and FSU this year (this comment should ruffle some feathers  :P).

I'm expecting a lot out of Selvie and Growthe this year seeing as they are seniors.  The WR core didn't look too bad last year, and I expect Love to have a big season.  I am worried about the Offensive line, as they lost a few starters from last season, so it might make the RBs look bad, although I think this is Mike Ford's year if the OL can get it together.

I think USF wins the Big East this year, but won't be playing for the National Championship.  Florida probably wins the National Championship again.

I think everyone should know who my team is. I don't expect much this year and in fact do not expect much until there is a coaching change. Stewart is a nice guy, but isn't a head coach in my opinion.

I see the gators repeating.

What I can't stand is the reporter who dared ask him if he was "Saving himself for marriage".  He was caught between a rock and a hard place.  He HAD to answer the question honestly.  If he took the "no comment" route, people would speculate and call him a hypocrite.  That reporter should be severly reprimanded and/or have her credentials suspended for a period of time.  His private life is no one's business but his own as long as he doesn't break any laws.

Notre Dame.  I expect them to win 7 games this year.  Unless Charlie Weis goes like 11-1 and gets into a BCS Bowl, he'll be back in the NFL next year.

As for the season......everyone is playing for second.

Word out of Seminoles camp is that Christian Ponder is looking much more accurate than a year ago and is rifling passes downfield rather than settling for "check downs".  The offensive line is in the best shape of it's life and Easterling will give the receiving corps a major boost as he is not showing any ill effects from his torn Achillies tendon.

They're replacing seven of ten starters on defense, so that will be a little iffy.  The good news is most of their backups on defense get extensive playing time.

Not sure about that.  I think Miami will be great, as long as starters on the offensive line and Quarterback stay healthy (and, to a lesser extent, linebacker).  If any of those go down, ouch...they're still young and will have some games where their youth shows, but all in all I see good improvement this year.  And I think they beat USF.

Grothe done for the season just killed any chances the bulls had to win their division let alone the real teams in the state.

Miami looks very very good.

Alabama is quickly looking like the best team in the SEC. We'll see when Arkansas shows up this weekend. Florida took some hits to their image while they struggled with the Vols this past weekend.

Yeah, Grothe being out for the year is pretty heartbreaking, especially right before the FSU game.  Don't count B.J. Daniels out...he's only a red shirt freshman, but has more physical tools than Grothe.  It doesn't look good, but I'm not giving up hope yet.  The "real" Florida teams still better watch out.

BYU was very overrated and don't win that game against Oklahoma with Bradford out.  FSU was 111 out of 118 in pass defense.  Don't underestimate USF.  Auburn and Kansas did, and look what happened to them.

I'm sure the front seven will.  They'll pressure the QB just like they did Ryan Perriloux in the second half of the Jacksonville State game.  The result.... seven sacks.

It's not like the reporter was out of line.  Tebow wears his morality on his sleeve.  He openly talks about it, and wears bible verses on its eye-black.  He also mentions that kind of stuff in his interviews all the time.  It's not like he's private about his belief system.

Edited to add: Good for Tebow, in this regard.  While I don't share the same beliefs about sex and marriage, I totally respect his beliefs and think that he's doing nobody any harm by keeping it in his pants, and am happy that he can live the way he chooses and feel good about it.

There have been plenty of religious athletes who've not been put on the spot like Tebow was though. For example, T.O. is religious, but no one's ever posed the question to him. Reggie White was never asked that question. I believe Michael Chang was asked, but not in a live interview. There are plenty of others. Likewise, if an athlete professes no religious beliefs, it's a little out-of-bounds for a reporter to say to him, "Mr. X, do you believe people of faith are completely delusional morons?" He very well might, but it's not something that he may want to express in public. The question isn't a fair one, because it sets up an inescapable dilemma for the individual asked: either you're dishonest or you get to look really awkward. I don't think anyone needs to be put in those type situations when the only reason they're famous is because they throw a ball. Now if they're famous for their beliefs, or have written about them, sure. But otherwise, leave it alone.

P.S. How 'bout them Gamecocks?

Why is it wrong to ask someone if they are saving themselves for marriage?
Why is it considered  "abnormal" if the answer is yes?
What is the BFD about this?
I don't think he was trying to hide that he is saving himself for marriage.

You guys are reading way to much into this.

OK.  Let me clarify what I said earlier.  I applaud Tebow for saving himself for marriage, and it is not abnormal at all.  Matter of fact, according to the Bible, it is the right thing to do.

The BFD I have is with the reporter who asked that question.  I do not want my love life choices making national news and I'm sure Tebow doesn't either.  IMO, love lives are private issues that should be shared voluntarily, not under questioning and media spotlight.  That reporter had no business asking that question.

Title: Re: Let's talk College Football!

I think that Tebow openly preaches his religious views and is vocal with his missionary duties and stuff like that.  Add to that that he's the most popular player in the country and this stuff is bound to come up.  It's not that he's religious...I'm sure there are plenty of religious players.  ...but Tebow is preachy.  There's a difference.  He clearly wants to be recognized in that respect.

If he didn't want to answer the question, he wouldn't have to.  I don't anyone would fault him for not openly talking about sex with reporters.

I'm sorry Dave but I disagree there.  If he refused to answer the question or uttered the famous line, "No comment", people would have speculated that he was having sex outside of marriage and would have labelled him a hypocrite.

If he were a politician, whose views would affect a wide swath of individuals, then I may agree with you. But he's a football player. He throws a ball. That's it. It's not natural just in the way that this is not natural: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xokthY5zuPU

What Jim Calhoun makes, or what Tim Tebow does with his spare time, is immaterial to a sports interview.

Total crap. John Beck went on a 2 year mission before going to college. Do reporters ask him about sex? No. And they shouldn't. Why not? It... doesn't... matter... at... all.

And saying he could just duck the question is ludicrous. Imagine being in front of those cameras, and that pressure you'd feel when you were put on the spot like that. It's like saying people don't feel pressure when asked to prove their sobriety by the police. With the police at least, there's a 4th amendment that reigns them in. With reporters, only their consciences can do that task. Unfortunately, it seems, those have become as worthless as the 4th amendment these days.

There are plenty of "preachy" Christian athletes (and athlete-related individuals) out there. Joe Gibbs, for example. But no reporter ought to be stupid enough to pop off a totally irrelevant question about their personal life. What's next? Bloody sheets to prove virginity after the first night of marriage?

I think all of this belongs in the Tebow thread, but anyway...

SC: Presumably Tebow sites bible verses in his eye black because people are watching and might notice. His religious beliefs are evangelical. He actively wants to convert others to Christianity. I don't think any of that is debatable. Given that he's made his religion a prominent part of his public persona, why is it so crazy that a reporter would want to ask questions related to his religious beliefs? He should welcome the questions as they give him an opportunity to be a "good" example for others. Has Tebow complained?

You should have seen the game.  Our D-line punched them in the mouth.  We had 5 sacks, 9 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, caused and recovered 4 fumbles and held them 19 yards rushing.  Not to mention, USF missed two easy field goals, so the score could have very well been 23-7.  It was total domination.  Oh, and did I mention that B.J. Daniels ran for 126 yards, threw two touchdown passes and accounted for 341 of USF's 368 yards of offense?  And that he is from Tallahassee and wasn't even recruited by FSU?  Awesome game.

They've had cupcake games up until the FSU game.

They play #10 Cincinnati in 3 weeks and Miami 11/28/09.  They play the rest of the Big East, but Cincinnati and Miami are the only ranked team at the moment.

Eh, I'm not going to worry about it until the BCS polls come out.

Also, I think saying one thinks the rankings are off because their team beat such and such ranked team is just plain dumb (when you think about it).

It's just super subjective. Do I really think the sportswriter for some newspaper in Los Angeles picking USC in the top ten regardless of what shitty pac team is going to beat them during the year, is picking with his intellect?

And this is why the old man will be sent to the nursing home after this season and can take his butt buddy Mickey Andrews with him.  Hell, I'd completely overhaul the coaching staff at this point.  NO EXCUSE FOR THIS FUCKING DEBACLE!!!!!

You think you'll be better off with Jimbo Fisher?  He doesn't excite me.  Bowden still brings the recruits.  I don't think he's the problem.  Like Miami, FSU is young, and the hype got to them against USF.  That, and the fact USF's a pretty damned good team.

I wouldn't mind seeing Fisher sent packing too.  If there's one coach I'd want at the helm next year, it's Norm Chow.

I'd tell you to go after Mark Whipple, but after Saturday, he sucks, Miami sucks, everything sucks.... ::)

FSU is on the right track, and so is Miami.  Both programs will be something to see by the end of this year, I expect.  In Miami's case, the media needed something to hype since USC had lost a game, and Miami fit.  The hype was 2 weeks premature.

The ACC in general has been overhyped, not just Miami & FSU.

^^^Well, from where I stand, the media's been hyping the ACC as being real bad, except for Miami (especially) and FSU.  Not it's VT's turn to face the hype for a while.  They're looking for the ACC team that will be the NC contender.  This team may not exist this year.  I think as Miami, FSU, and VT continue to mature (all three are pretty young teams) the ACC will return to prominence, but that's probably next year.

Miami, FSU, VT, GT, UNC have all been ranked this year. Did I miss any others? I don't think any of them were deserving of where the polls put them.

My Bulls cracked the top 25 at 23.  Now, if they can beat the Bear Cats in two weeks, they should be close to being a top ten team if not in the top ten.  That should be a tough game though, Cinci is looking really good at the moment.

Ya, I know.  I don't want to look too far ahead because USF seems to play well their first 5 or 6 games then go into the shitter, but if USF can beat Cinci in two weeks, I'll be a lot happier.  If it happens the way you predict, I won't be overlooking Miami.  They seem like a way better team than FSU (even though the FSU/MIA game was close, there isn't much parody in the NCAA).  I think that will be a good game when it happens at the end of the year.

Okay, I'm ready to take my lumps.  My Bulls played like shit tonight.  I was hoping that no one this year would expose B.J. Daniels's freshman status, but, alas, it happened.  He had a sweet bomb to Mitchell that would have put USF right back in it early in the 4th quarter, but Mitchell decided to get a case of the dropsies.  Easy TD opportunity missed.  I think USF had Pike's number, and if he had not gotten injured, we'd be looking at a new ballgame, but his backup had our number.

I think USF might be better in the years to come when B.J. gets some more experience, but not tonight and it's looking like not this year.  B.J. does remind me of Mike Vick at VA Tech the way he plays though, and Pier-Paul looks like he'll take over Selvie's spot next year.  Depressing night overall.

1) When the Gator's offensive line is obviously holding most of the game

2)  There is offensive pass interference that is called defensive pass interference and keeps the Gators drive alive,

3)  When Arkansas gets called for a personal foul for a Gators player running into an Arkansas player, and just because the Gator player got de-cleated, Arkansas gets called for it keeps a Gators drive alive

4)  When a Tim Tebow run falls short of the first down by almost 2 yards, and magically he gets a firstdown, putting his team close enough for a chip shot FG

Yah, I'd say it was rigged.  Some of those calls go either way, but it was obvious when I was watching the game, what was happening.

Arkansas was holding just as much. That was pass interference in the endzone. The only bcall i will concede was the defensive lineman blocking, that was terrible. Other than that you have nothing. Arkansas was + 4 in the turnover ratio and still lost. Only 10 percent of college teams -4 in the turnover ratio win. They didnt capatilize on out mistakes.

Did the refs miss that 38 yrd field goal as well. Bottom line is we won and no media member or critic is going to take that away from us. It's allways great to be a FLORIDA GATOR!!!

I am by no means an Arkansas fan, and I'm pretty impartial to the Gator, so it's not like I'm a hater on them.  You're right, with 4 Turnovers, the Razorbacks should have won, but if you take off your blue and orange colored glasses, it's not a win to be proud of.  The Gators needed help from the refs to stay in that game against an unranked team just to pull it out in the end.  I may have been over the top by saying that game was rigged, but it looked awfully fishy to me, especially with the Tebow run on 3rd down that was clearly short of the first down marker to give them a chip shot FG to win it.

You're the only person I've heard question the spot on that Tebow run. He made it. The kick was good. The game was won.

The SEC said a single personal foul call was wrong. While that penalty helped Florida, I don't think it's accurate to say Arkansas lost the game because of one bad call.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Southeastern Conference has suspended officials from last weekend's Arkansas-Florida game after the crew was involved in its second controversial call of the year.

Referee Marc Curles' crew called a personal foul on Arkansas defensive lineman Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter as the Gators were rallying for a 23-20 victory. The league said there was no video evidence to support the call.

The same group of officials called the LSU-Georgia game earlier this month, which included a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty the league said shouldn't have been called.

"A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday. "I believe our officiating program is the best in the country. However, there are times when these actions must be taken."

SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said this is the first time the league has publicly suspended a football crew like this.

The SEC says the crew will be removed from its next scheduled assignment Oct. 31 and will not be assigned to officiate as a crew until Nov. 14.

The league said the crew's bowl assignments could also be impacted.

"The entire crew shoulders responsibility for each play. I have taken this action because there must be accountability in our officiating program," Slive said. "Our institutions expect the highest level of officiating in all of our sports and it is the duty of the conference office to uphold that expectation."

So the Gators did get help from the refs in making that big comeback.

If it is a penalty that keeps a drive alive late in the 4th quarter, then one bad call can go a long way to deciding how a game ends.

Was there blantant favortism? I doubt it, but the SEC is a couple levels beyond proud of their reputation as the best football conference, and if Florida did fall before the SEC championship game with Bama, then that would have created a shitstorm in rankings down the road. SO there might have been some sort of favortism at an unconscious level

Nobody griped when Florida lost to Mississippi last year.  I think an in conference loss would actually bolster the SEC's reputation. It would be seen as more evidence that it's nearly impossible to make it through the SEC undefeated.

I'm not a Gators fan...not a Razorbacks fan either. I did watch this game though, and most of the other SEC football that I can get my eyes on every week (mainly because I just love well-played football and also because I am in an "SEC-only" college fantasy football game, and want to keep up with every single player. ;-) ). I thought there were some calls that were questionable, but nothing that made me think that the officiating crew was intentionally showing favoritism, or even unintentionally on a subconscious level.

One final thought, and one I've brought up before in other similar situations. For the officiating crew to intentionally show favoritism to direct the result of a game one way or another would require a conspiracy to be committed, and "any" conspiracy runs the risk of being discovered. A conspiracy by the SEC to use officials to direct the result of a game would "destroy" the SEC's credibility.

I just cannot see any intelligent university chancellor or other controlling entity risking that for such an unsure end-result as this.

A conspiracy doesn't need to go that deep. It only takes one call by one official to do it. I'm not saying there is any such conspiracy, only that it doesn't have to go as deep through the SEC as you suggest.

Unless you're talking about some rogue referee who holds some deep-seated hatred toward a particular school, I don't see any way of this sort of thing being intentional without some sort of conspiracy involved from higher up than the officiating crew.

I think you're right, but one thing annoyed me to no end.  I watched the replays/highlights of that play 50-60 times probably, and every time they show the shot from the player's left, the line is straight down the goalline, but you can't see the ball out of his hand because it is behind his leg. When they show the shot from the right side, it isn't from straight across the goalline, it is from the 10-yard line. How the fuck are you supposed to get perspective with that shot?

It doesn't even have to be deep seated hatred. It could be as simple as a gambling problem. I don't see intentional misdeed as the issue though so it is a moot point.

Dude, it's the brats and burgers, not the Noles.

Georgia wasn't a tough opponent, but it was nice to see the Gators clicking on offense again.

It was a rival and trust me Jawja wanted it bad. Mark Richt resorted to another failed motivational ploy and gimmick. Black pants and helmets. LMAO!!!

Jawja was just outclassed. If that offense ever starts clicking, Wacth Out!!!

On the F$U........How about those 20,000 empty seats!!! That was hilarious.  C.J. Spilller may top what he did against Miami VS F$U. They have holes everywhere on that defense. Mickey Andrews is terrible. That's one assistant who needs to be fired!!.........My Gators are going to give him a going away present in about 3 weeks.

That win for MIAMI  was  a wild one,  I would have  been pissed to lose to another Carolina team. Good game " The U"

I've got inside info on the recruiting trail, and the talk is, they're firing nearly every defensive assistant.

Let's go Bulls!!!!! I smell an upset. Jacory Harris should throw about 2 more picks, Jason Fox is doubtful for the game which means the bulls pass rush should be on harris all day. This is obviously the best game in the state, because we all know what time of year it is for F$U.

Florida's domination of FSU was predictable, but it was still nice to see Tebow leave the Swamp with a solid W.

How about Stanford and Toby Gerhart? That kid is a beast.

Miami came in wired.  Tenshot, your team's going to be scary-good once they can recruit some depth.
