Title: Jon Gruden....... Post by: Defense54 on September 22, 2009, 10:49:10 am I kinda like him in the Booth. I think he makes intelligent remarks and I just like his style. I hope he sticks around. What do you all think? Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: BigDaddyFin on September 22, 2009, 02:11:27 pm He knows what he's talking about and he's actually amusing to listen to. I'm still not a fan of Mike Tirico but not because I think he's a shitty broadcaster, I don't like his style compared to Jaws and Gruden.
Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: Denver_Bronco on September 22, 2009, 02:29:45 pm Enjoy Gruden this year cause this will be it I am assuming. There is no way that he doesn't at least coach in the college ranks next season, if not the NFL.
Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: MaineDolFan on September 22, 2009, 03:41:39 pm He will be coaching your Donkeys next year.
On the positive side of that, he'll be working with an over all #2 or 3 pick in next year's draft. So there is something to look forward to! Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: Denver_Bronco on September 22, 2009, 05:09:24 pm He will be coaching your Donkeys next year. I'd say a #5 to be fair...... :DOn the positive side of that, he'll be working with an over all #2 or 3 pick in next year's draft. So there is something to look forward to! Post by: Tenshot13 on September 23, 2009, 02:37:59 am I've lived in the Tampa Bay area my whole life, so I hear more Bucs talk than anything else. He gets too much credit for that Superbowl win of his. He took over a great team, and it wasn't his "offensive genius" that won them that Superbowl, it was one of he greatest defenses of all time....a defense that he broke apart later because they weren't "his guys".
He (and I say he because the GM Bruce Allen was his puppet) ended up spending money on players like Charlie Garner at the end of his career, and Luke Pettigue who was a huge bust, when players like Drew Brees were out there for the picking. The biggest reason I don't like his ass is that he alienated players. Everyone thinks Keyshawn Johnson is a douche for his antics in Tampa right? Wrong! Gruden alienated him and made it seem like it was all Key. Trust me, I'm no Keyshawn lover...in fact I don't like the guy very much, but he did alienate him from the team. He did the same thing with Alstott and Shelton Quarells. There was a reason that players wouldn't sign with Tampa after the Superbowl, and he was the reason. I think Cato June was the biggest name they signed since they won a superbowl, and where does he play now? Point is, Gruden is a fake douchebag and was a horrible coach that gets way too much credit. I'll admit that he isn't a bad commentator, but he is a grade A douchebag. Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: jtex316 on September 23, 2009, 04:52:18 pm I don't give a shit if you're a douchebag. Belichick is the single biggest douchebag of all time, but he is a hall of fame NFL legendary coach.
Gruden is over-rated, yes, and he did take over Tony Dungy's solid defensive team. His "style" only works well for a short while - like Dan Reeves or Jim Fassel or even Dave Wanny...after a very short period of time, it wears off and that's that. This is what happened to Gruden. Sucks though because he is an up-front kind of guy and he's not shy about telling a player to F off. Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... How do you think you could do keeping a team contending when you have only 1 first round draft pick and 1 second round draft pick in the next three years. Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: BigDaddyFin on September 24, 2009, 02:52:47 am Gruden is an above average NFL coach, and I'm sure people think he's a jerk but I like his style and were I a player, I'd love to play for him. I think he does just fine in the booth. He brings fun and energy back into the booth if nothing else, which MNF hasn't had since Don Meredith.
Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: CF DolFan on September 24, 2009, 08:55:34 am Being in Orlando obviously we hear tons of Bucs info and I think that everyone, including Gruden, gave Tony plenty of credit for the win. I really wish Tampa wouldn't have let him go because he is a good coach.
On a personal note I'm thinking this time off will do him a world of good and whoever lands him next will be the benifactor. Let's go Jacksonville!! Wow ... did I just say that? They haven't been the same since he left. Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: Tenshot13 on September 24, 2009, 05:52:03 pm I'll give credit where credit is due and say he was a great coach when he was with the Oakland Raiders. He was barely a .500 coach over the 7 years he was with Tampa though (win % was .509).

He didn't have to build shit though, the team was already built. He eventually had draft picks, and not a one of them has panned out. He passed on Adrian Peterson for Gaines Adams for gods sake! Again, living in Tampa, I have heard more Gruden talk and more Gruden interviews than everyone on this board. He was a mediocre coach at best, and he is a douche (which was my main point to begin with). Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: fyo on September 24, 2009, 08:35:06 pm He passed on Adrian Peterson for Gaines Adams for gods sake! 5 other teams passed on Adrian Peterson - none of them with a better player to show for it. Considering the arguments made over the years about drafting a running back in the first round, that's not one of the points I'd choose to criticize. Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Who on TV Is? maybe Joe thiesman is TOO real because I cringe hearing him in the booth. Not as bad as Dennis Miller......but not far behind IMO. Jon gruden was very pleasant. He knows his shit and added to the game experience. Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: NADS on September 27, 2009, 08:18:43 pm Gruden is better than Tony Kornheiser so I'm all for it.
Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: BigDaddyFin on September 28, 2009, 09:46:15 pm Jon Gruden actually got two teams to the Superbowl without being on one of them. Oakland sucked before he got there, they sucked after he left. Tampa had a better defense, but they don't look that great this year and aside from their offensive line, I don't see them improving anytime soon.

Well, the Bucs just benched Leftwitch and Josh Johnson is getting the start now. Johnson only played division 2 ball, but he holds the record for best career QB rating in the NCAA at 176. Another good QB played division 2 ball and I believe he plays for the Ravens and is pretty good. I see the Bucs improving under Johnson. Playoffs? Probably not, but they won't be as bad as they were because they have all the tools on offense. As for Gruden, I'm done trying to explain why he sucks, because no one is going to see my view on it. I know I live in the city he's coached for the past 7 years and if you ask any Tampa person that knows his ass from a hole in the ground they'll tell you I'm right. Don't hate on me just because you're ignorant on the situation. Title: Re: Jon Gruden....... Post by: Defense54 on September 29, 2009, 08:05:42 pm This coming from...where the hell do you live? I'm sure I know more people here then you do that would agree with me. You like him. I get that. And I really couldn't care who likes what about Gruden. All I said was I dug him in the Booth on Monday night. He's a pretty good commentator and you agreed with that. Thats all. Even Dan Marino , who I have a small shrine dedicated to in my Den, can get a bit dry when he's commentating. I think Coaches have a way better perspective and outlook of the game as opposed to Ex Players who really can only comment on 1 aspect of the game with any authority. Kind of like Madden I suppose. No worries, I'm not a Bucs fan or from Tampa, so my opinion of Gruden is as an outsider. I do and always have enjoyed his personality and his commentationg though, way more so than Tony Kornheiser who I think is a talk show guy and that's about it. |
