Title: Comic Review: The Walking Dead Post by: Dave Gray on October 07, 2009, 05:20:15 pm To my local friends, I own this series and will be happy to let your borrow it. To those of you I don't know personally, if you have an interest in zombies, this is worth your time.
Above all else, it's completely unrelenting. Your favorite character(s) will get killed, maimed, raped, tortured, etc. It happens all over the place and there's not enough time to grieve, because as soon as it happens, everyone is on the run again. It's brutal and I don't think that it could be done in another medium. Strangely enough, however, AMC has picked it up for a show. I doubt they'll be able to keep the same level of unrelenting turmoil. I've never been into comics, but I LOVE zombies, and after seeing what some other folks on this site were saying about this series, I thought that I'd give it a shot. I'm up to volume 5 now, and am worried that I'll blow through the entire series up to date, and have to wait God knows how long for volume 11.

Title: Re: Comic Review: The Walking Dead Post by: stinkfish on October 08, 2009, 09:31:40 pm Am I missing something, or are all of the characters in the story zombies in waiting? It seems that any kind of death, natural or otherwise, will result in the dearly departed coming back? If that's the case, then why would Rick bury his friend, Allen, rather than burn the body?
That being said, I'm only on volume 5, so no spoilers, please. ;) Title: Re: Comic Review: The Walking Dead Post by: Dave Gray on October 08, 2009, 11:24:44 pm Stinkfish, this may count as a spoiler, so use your own judgment as to whether or not to read on.
[POSSIBLE SPOILERS] In the Walking Dead, up until Volume 10, it is unknown what causes the infection. What is discovered, though, is that it appears that anyone who recently dies comes back, whether bitten or not. Rick buries his friend because he doesn't know this. When he does find out, though, he returns to the grave site to put him out of his misery. I am just speculating, but perhaps the infection is also air-born and everyone already has it -- it's just "in remission" until your blood stops pumping. WOWRick kinda reminds me of Steven King's Gunslinger, Roland. Title: Re: Comic Review: The Walking Dead Post by: Sunstroke on October 30, 2009, 12:39:02 am WOW Rick kinda reminds me of Steven King's Gunslinger, Roland. That's enough to get me to read it right there... Roland Deschain is one of my favorite literary characters of all time. Title: Re: Comic Review: The Walking Dead Post by: bsmooth on October 30, 2009, 01:06:27 am Unfortunately I have never read the series with Roland in it, so I cannot make a comparison.
