Title: Anyone else want to debate Papelbon with me?
Post by: MaineDolFan on October 11, 2009, 05:42:06 pm
Papelbon had a two run 9th to work with.  Two outs.  Two strikes.  And...

The Angels win the game, 7-6.  The Angels win the series, 3-0.

Papelbon is an overrated piece of garbage.  Great against the weak teams.  Garbage against the good ones.

At least the guy that should be closing for Boston looked awesome:

Bard enters the 6th with no outs and the bases loaded.  Gets out of it by only surrendering the run on 3rd.  Pitches a scoreless 7th.  Boy...wish Boston had a guy like that they could rely on in the 9th!

You  hit it right on the head Maine.  I recall you saying earlier that this guy want's "Mariano Rivera" type money.  I hope Theo Epstein stands pat and doesn't give it to him.  Let him test the free agent market and see what he gets.  Then he'll have to come crawling back to Boston and take what's offered.

By the numbers, Pap had a pretty good season. Unfortunately, he wasn't there when the Sox needed him the most. Of course, it's not his fault the Sox were down 0-2 going into today's game. He's definitely not worth Rivera-type money. Let him go and see how Bard handles closing.

Any chance the Pap is a little more than ticked off, and maybe even distracted about Theo bringing in Wagner? Maybe he wants out?

He definitely blew this game, but I believe he started his postseason career with something like 20+ straight scoreless innings. He got the job done in the past, he just may have been a headcase this year.

I don't think Wagner made him bad, he is just a setup guy.

Bard scares me, I don't ever want him to get better control, because a guy throwing 100 MPH with accuracy is unhittable.

IF he goes to free agency, which he probably should, he will get scooped up.  He'll probably end up in a middle relief role somewhere like Kansas City or Oakland and fade into obscurity.

He clearly has lost his handle on his game, and credit where its due, Maine has been saying it since the all-star break (maybe before).  I bet he is peeved beyond belief that this is what ended the Sox' season today.

Sorry, Maine.  You told us so...

If he goes into free agency, he may end up wearing pinstripes

It's what we saw all season. His getting into trouble except this time he wasn't able to get out of it. Daniel Bard for closer '09!

Here is the thing - the Sox didn't lose this series because of Papelbon.  They lost a game.  It's not his fault that they couldn't come home with at least a split.  And Wagner shares some of the blame for yesterday's loss, as does Kevin Youkilis.  Without Youkilis kicking a well thrown ball to first, Anaheim never gets that second run.  Lots of blame to go around.

I will say again - Papelbon is a very good pitcher.  He is one of the better closers in the game.  But he is not elite.

Here is where Maine needs to eat some crow-I once said I would take Nathan over Papelbon.  Well Nathan gave one away on the road as well, didn't he?  Phew.  Tough weekend for closers!

I don't know who I would rather have as my closer until Bard is ready.  But I don't think it will matter because I strongly suspect Papelbon is traded this offseason, based on what I was hearing before yesterday.  You all might be surprised in the dancing partner Boston has been (rumored to be) talking to.

Papelbon did exactly what he was supposed to do... Now, loan him to the Yankees for the rest of the playoffs and my brilliantly diabolical plan to sabotage the AL Elitist swine will be complete!!

The only team that would surprise me would be the Yankees and I think Theo values his life too much to actually talk trade with them.

The Yankees, Cubs and Seattle are three teams interested in Papelbon.  I would trade him to the Yankees in a heart beat.

Seriously? I can't imagine the total and complete uproar that would occur in Red Sox Nation should that happen (and result being I'd have to burn my Papelbon jersey).

You don't trade with divisional rivals...... you just don't.  The Dolphins broke that rule with the Patriots twice, and it burned them.

You do if you're trading away over-rated trash and getting back decent future talent.

Sadly, Wes Welker turned out to be some pretty good trash.
