Title: Throwback jerseys
Post by: StL FinFan on October 25, 2009, 01:00:24 pm
Last night at the Blues game we saw someone wearing a throwback jersey with a current player's name and number on it.  That's just wrong.  It should have someone who played in that jersey.  What say you?

I disagree, Stl.  If someone likes the style of the old throwback jersey but wants a current player, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Technically they have the right to wear whatever they want, but style wise it's tacky as hell.

To you and me it may be, but maybe not to them.  To each his own dude.

StL: do you mind if an ex-player from a bygone jersey era has a jersey for sale under the current jersey set?

For example, would you find it wrong if the Dolphins sold an orange Marino jersey, despite the fact that he never played in orange tops?

According to the NFL, you cannot buy a custom jersey in the name of a former player's team that the player retired from.  So purchasing a Marino jersey in orange would be impossible.

Wow, I had no idea.

Are these not officially licensed then?

I agree with Wilbon...I just want a weekend of Wear your Regular uni's..... :D

Yeah,I think it's odd tto see a Mark Duper/Mark Clayton/Dan Marino Orange jersey..When they never wore it....I guess if bothered people so much...They shouldn't buy them....

I admit, I don't want a Aramis Ramirez '84 Chicago Cubs Jeresy....So for Me I agree with Stl,but I think it's ok if they make them....

Modified to add..What about the Navy Blue Dolphin jersey's,or the Old Black ones? I have a Navy Blue Chris Chambers....I bought it because it was different....

I'm wearing  a Wes Welker throwback right now.

So what happened if my name was Jim-Bob Marino, the NFL can tell me I'm not allowed to buy an Orange Phins uniform with my own name on it?

Surely in your sue first ask questions later legal system, there must be a great legal challenge to that rule?

Most of the players from today have worn some sort of throwback jersey for a certain game (NFL) or series (MLB).  For instance the Broncos wore the 1961-63 home/away jerseys the last 2 weeks, therefore their current players have worn it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it if someone gets a throwback with a current players name on it.

Even if I could get that, I would not because he never wore it.

I was hoping that the Broncos would wear their other throwback jerseys. There is a jersey that they have before they redesigned it with the traditional block D with the horse snorting out of the D. That jersey is almost as bad as the bumble bee jersey because the horse looks drunk on the side of the helmet.

Any way, original jerseys should have the original names of the players on them.

You just can't get a #13 if that was the case.  Any other number would be fine.

For the most part I can't stand throwbacks (except the Dolphins  ;D)  But I agree with Tommy, to each their own.

You can certainly have it say Marino, but it cannot be a Dolphins jersey with #13. I don't really see how you can challenge it because it has to do with licensing. Marino #13 jersey are now licensed as throwbacks which are typically more expensive to buy.

I agree that a throwback style should be kept with throwback players, unless the teams have adopted playing in the throwbacks during the course of the year. Then all is fair as far as I am concerned.

Side note, I just ordered my first Islanders "sweater".

This is something that has bothered me this season -

Watching Kansas City playing as the "Dallas Texans" and the Tennessee Titans playing as the "Houston Oilers."

If I were a person that grew up loving those two original teams, only to watch them snatched away and ripped off to another city, I would feel insulted as hell.

If Kansas City wants to wear throw backs those throw backs should go back to the earliest jersey KANSAS CITY has.  They shouldn't go into a franchise that (a) doesn't exist anymore and from a (b) completely different city.

Has KC ever changed their jersey?

^^They sure as hell don't wear red helmets with the state of Texas on them anymore!

What they should be wearing:

What they wore against Dallas AND yesterday:

Makes perfect sense wearing that helmet...IN Kansas City...during a home game.  I would feel overjoyed to be a KANSAS CITY fan, watching my team play Dallas...and MY TEAM has TEXAS on their helmets.

Can you get customized throwback jerseys?  It seems that all I see is Marino or something Csonka.  But I want someone else.

I have also seen Griese & Warfield ones. I don't know about any company offering custom ones.

This rule only applies to custom-ordered jerseys.  It has no bearing whatsoever on the ability of the Miami Dolphins organization to offer an orange Marino jersey for sale.

I see your point (especially with the Titans), but there is some history involved.  Both owners of the Texans (Lamar Hunt) and Oilers (Bud Adams) were rich Texans that made there money in oil.  They wanted to join the NFL but were denied so they created the American Football League (not to be confused with two failed leagues that also used AFL).  In 1960, the NFL created the Dallas Cowboys to directly compete with the Dallas Texans so Hunt moved to Kansas City in 1963.  Hope that makes you feel better about the Chiefs anyway.

If you're a big NFL history buff I recommend  America's Game by Michael MacCambridge.

You can get any throwback jersey you want, with any name or number you want. You may not be able to get them directly from the NFL, but trust me...you can get "anything" done on a jersey. Hit eBay sometime, do a search for "custom football jerseys" and take your pick. If you're willing to pay, there are companies willing to put it together.

I have known someone (not personally) who put their name on the back of a throwback jersey. He apparently used it as an "ice-breaker" to get to know people and to hit on women as a "former" professional player.

I don't really know how that would work. Most people do not break out their retired jersey to hang out, drink and watch games in them.  ::)

Did have one question about the topic though. January 1 of 2010 will have the Winter Classic game of Boston vs. Philadelphia. Most likely (I didn't see if they were doing this for sure) they will be wearing classic jerseys for that game (aka, throwback jerseys). Are these ok? I do know for a fact that the players will have at minimum 2 (if not 3) jerseys used for the game so it can be sold or marketed in collector cards as game used equipment. I assume they get to keep one for their own.

^ It has been brought up that sometimes teams sport throwback jerseys or sweaters.  I would not have a problem with it in those cases.  Hockey players move around so much my sweaters are not personalized.

I want to see the Ravens come out wearing the old Cleveland Browns gear. :D

The Ravens are a weird exception in this league of team moves... The Browns FRANCHISE never moved to Baltimore. There was a deal (after a lawsuit filed by the city of Cleveland) that kept the Browns "legacy" (as it was at the time) in Cleveland and giving Moddell a NEW franchise (the 31st, with the Browns being officially listed as "deactivated" for 3 years).

IOW: The Browns are the Browns. The Ravens are an expansion team.
