Title: Review: Windows 7 64 ultimate Post by: bsfins on October 26, 2009, 10:35:05 pm Product -Windows 7 64 ultimate
(Upgrading from Windows xp home 32 bit) Things I like.... Speed - OK,yeah I got a major upgrade hardware wise,I'm able to take advantage of the hardware I've got..Like 8 gb's of memopry, rather than 2.99 Taskbar - dragging things to the task bar, making the entire thing a Quick launch bar (yeah, yeah macs already do that) I never used the quick launch bar,but I'll use this feature quite a bit Previews of the task bar- If hover over an icon on the taskbar,it gives me a preview if it's active.....I've found this handy, when downloading things, multiple tabs open Start menu search feature - it's great it's like a search engine of your computer, unfortunately, I'm a horrible typist, and tend to mis type lots of things...So some of my file names are off...This feature was Very useful when I was transferring over files from my old hard drive..... Customization - I like that there are lots of themes built in...different looks...I like the pretty about it.... Gadgets - (another thing Mac's has had for awhile) Little widgets on the desktop,Clock,Weather, news feeds,Etc,etc. Sticky notes - Just like they sound, they look like yellow post it notes, you can place on your desktop.... Snipping tool - I'll use this tool alot, I have a HUGE "data" file,it's just pictures I've stolen off the web...I need close up picture of a light bulb for a project, I need a picture of a beach...Well I can take this tool and what ever is on my screen,I can marquee it,and turn it into a picture....For me it helps me steal just what I need without a gazillion pics.... When you're downloading something,or transferring something, the icon in the taskbar becomes a Progress bar...Great thing,it allows me to work on something else, and I don't have to stop and check on the progress...It's a nice little touch... Things I don't like.... It seems to store too much info - All my searches are right there...All the recent places I browsed are right there The my documents - In XP, I had my documents, inside of that I had my Pictures,My Music, Videos,Ebooks...in W7,you have my documents, then separate folders of downloads.videos,pictures,music...I had to use the search feature to find where some of my files are going because they weren't where I thought they were..... Libraries - I guess they're kind of groups of folders....They act like folders,I wish I could customize them a bit....I probably can,but they lose their preview ...they all look like tan folders.... Programs - in the start menu, they're like libraries....I've not found away,to put all my creative programs into one folder (CD4,Photoshop,illustrator, swift 3d ,etc,etc)...All my utility type programs into a folder (antivirus, antispyware, crapcleaner, etc, etc.) Control panel- They took something, and made it more confusing....I hate the Category view,It makes me feel like they're hiding the thing I want to access..Luckily they do have Icon mode.... Over All, I really like it....I had a major problem, installing it...I got my Copy Friday afternoon, installed it started to get up and running....Woke up Saturday morning,Turned on my monitor, and My bios was flashing, and couldn't find the Hard drive...Brand new Western Digital 1 TB Black drive....So Saturday I had to reinstall it...It's been fine ever since.... I've had bigger problems getting all my stuff to work right,John Madden Football installed, but when I tried to play it, It would go to the splash screen, right before it got to the start screen it would crash...(I had to copy the install folder from XP,over the new install to get it to work) I just got my Activation fixed from Adobe,Because it wouldn't recognize the serial number, from 32 to bit to 64 bit version.....I can't use Outlook,so I'm scratching my head on how to use one of my Email addresses.... So there have been lots of headaches.... I'd give the move a 2.5 stars, out of 5 (I'm still having trouble findoing windows 7 compatible stuff (see firewall thread) Annoyance factor - 3 out of 5 (One of the themes everytime you click it would make like a drum noise UGHHH it annoyed me,and took forever to fins how to turn it off) Over all 4 out of 5 stars |
