Title: Your Favorite one hit wonder?
Post by: bsfins on October 27, 2009, 02:38:41 pm
Yesterday on Dan Patrick they were talking about Aha,and it came up again today....Great Video, kind of catchy..I admit I like the song...

I'd have to put Eddie Grant - Electrice Ave. as my favorite one hit wonder....

What's your favorite one hit wonder?

Man, before my iPod was stolen, I lived for collecting one hit wonders. I can't give just one though...so a few of my favorite one hit wonders other than Electric Ave would be...

Tommy Tutone: 867-5309

Modern English:  Melt With You

The Knack:  My Sharona

Nena:  99 Luftballoons

Faith No More:   Epic (they did have the song "midlife crisis," but not sure that counts as a hit)

Mark Cohn:  Walking in Memphis

Marcy Playground:  Sex and Candy

Blind Melon:  No Rain

Primitive Radio Gods:  Standing outside a broken phone booth with money in my hand

You got some great ones there Stroke.... ;D

I agree it is so hard to pick one since the 80's was virtually a one hit wonder decade. I was alway partial to Big Country's In a Big Country.

Stroke, having owned the Blind Melon album with No Rain on it, it was one of my least favorite songs on the CD (althought it was the song that got me to buy it).

^^^ LOL...too funny, because I'm a huge Big Country fan (seen them twice in concert), and I'd never consider them a one hit wonder. I don't doubt the Blind Melon comment though... With new bands I'd never heard before, the release single is often one of my least favorite songs on the CD as well.

PS...pick up a copy of "The Seer" by Big Country one of these times and jam that puppy all the way through. The released single on that one "Look Away" is pretty good, but it's really tasty from cover to cover.

Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta

Oh hell yeah, I love that song...

Don Maclean: Bye Bye Miss American Pie

I can thumbs-up the other three, but Don McLean would have to be a 2-hit wonder, because "Vincent" ("Starry, starry night...) was pretty big as well. American Pie was just so iconic that it eclipsed the success of his other hit. ;)

Wait a minute guys, there's two sides to being a one-hit wonder.

I really can't think of a one hit wonder because most of them are on world radio stations. By the modern term of one hit wonder, I'll have to go with Bonnie Tyler (Total Eclipse of The Heart).

Some of these people got fed up with show business and left all together. Some of them weren't given artistic control that they wanted and went overseas as independent artists.

Lil B mentioned Eddy Grant. Grant is an international musician whose music "Electric Avenue" and "Romancing the Stone" just happened to hit in the US. He runs his own record company out of Jamaica and produces songs with David Bowie, Sting and a host of others.

Then there are the one hit wonders that are known all over the world for other music but a strategically kept out of America because they understand songwriting and composition better than most American artists who make s*(*.

Look at the 80's which was the "Second British Invasion movement" (the first being the Beatles, Stones and Clapton). International artists invaded the charts and put many American artists to shame in almost every genre, including Soul music. A-ha, Nena, Duran Duran, Men Without Hats, Tears for Fears, I could go on and on. They were established international artists before they became a staple on American radio. I saw Nena live in a German bar when "99 Luftballoons" was released and she gave me a hug and I haven't taken a bath since!

The "big three" Sony, Capital and Universal made sure that there would not be a British invasion number 3 so they limited many overseas acts by not signing them who were still making great music. They cut them all out of American radio and made it "appear" that they were one hit wonders. Check out the list...

Joe Jackson, The Style Council, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, Morrissey, Swing Out Sister. These bands are still making good music.

And out of all of these acts, they promote the sorriest band that I've ever heard, U2. U2 hasn't made anything meaningful since the Joshua Tree and that was in 1987.

Many American artists had to leave the country to get a fair record deal (Tina Turner and Marvin Gaye).

American music is bull*(*(. It's corporitized. If you're listing to Y-100 in the Miami-Ft.Lauderdale area, your programming manager is in NY telling the DJ's to play Britney Spears every 40 minutes. You can't request nothing because they are programming you on what THEY want you to hear.

Thanks to Bill Clinton signing the Telecommunications Act of 1996, community radio got killed which introduced these "one hit wonders" to the world without having to sell out their soul or ass to the record industry. Thank God for the Internet.

So the one hit wonders are still making good music. You'll have to find it on the Internet.

Nice rant but I disagree on several points (all opinion). First the whole 80's music scene is a guilty pleasure of mine. I really hate the fact that I can recognize so much of it because it is all poppy and crap. I'm not a fan of commercial radio so these European artists really aren't any better than the radio crap played here in my opinion.

Another thing I disagree with is your mention of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 introducing one hit wonders. These groups all splashed in the 80's long before this act passed. The decentralization of companies was already well on its way anyway. It didn't cause the phenomena of corporate giants in communications, but it didn't help break them up either.

Red Rider:  Lunatic Fringe

To be fair, Tom Cochrane was the lead singer of Red Rider and he did okay for himself as a solo artist.  Does that qualify as "one hit?"  Probably...but just sayin'.

I love, love, love the Outfield's "Your Love."

"Just because you're right doesn't mean I'm wrong..."

GREAT song.

Also Naked Eyes "Promises, Promises."

AND...

Heavy D and the Boyz..."Now That We Found Love."  Yah...

What makes a hit?  A song that did not reach the top 40 does not constitute a hit to me.

He had another hit called "Wildside"

^^ I think of a one hit wonder as When you ask the average person...Name as many songs as you can by.......and they only can name 1....sometimes two..they're probably a one hit wonder....but...I guess I'm just waay off in my thinking.....

Title: Re: Your Favorite one hit wonder?
Post by: MaineDolFan on October 29, 2009, 01:25:56 pm
What makes a hit?  A song that did not reach the top 40 does not constitute a hit to me.

Exactly.

Naked Eyes "Always Something There to Remind Me" maxed at #8 and was only at that spot for a week.  It went from 17 to 8 and then down into the 20's.  "Promises, Promises" went to 11, also short lived, and dropped into the 30's immediately following that.  I played both singles as currents working part time at my CHR.  I had just broken into radio.

So sorry, Tommy...Naked Eyes is very much a one hit wonder.

Heavy D and the Boyz:

Now That We Found Love itself is a marginal hit.  It never cracked the top 10 and was only in the top 20 for a week.  Max position #11.  The follow up "Is It Good to You" didn't make it into the top 30, maxing out at 32.  "Got Me Waiting" came out a year later, hit #20 and immediately died the following week.  I was working in Boston at the time doing 10p-1a at Boston's first "rap" station.  "Big Daddy" did better than "Got Me Waiting" - that one hit #18 in 1995.  "Long Distance Girlfriend" hit #20 last year.

And guess what?  He is a one hit wonder.

Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch had four singles off that CD that also included "Good Vibrations."  And 99 out of 100 people that listened to pop radio in that day STILL couldn't tell you what those songs are.  Me?  I had the "pleasure" of playing them all.  "Wildside" was okay, "I Need Money" sucks as does "Peace."

Just because an artist has more than one song CHART it doesn't take them out of the definition of "one hit wonder."

The Outfield had six songs crack the top 40.  And most people have no clue what they are.  When you are remembered for one song, and one song only...you're a one hit wonder.

Funny thing about one hit wonders?  People sometimes think "that song was huge!"  And most of the time it wasn't.  "Your Love" was everywhere in 1986...and it didn't even make the top 5.

Title: Re: Your Favorite one hit wonder?
Post by: Phishfan on October 29, 2009, 01:52:39 pm
I personally consider a song reaching number 6 as a huge hit. It just goes to show all of this is subjective.

Title: Re: Your Favorite one hit wonder?
Post by: Brian Fein on October 29, 2009, 02:05:23 pm
I think its important to differentiate between "release" and "hit".  No artists only wrote one song, but lots of artists only had one POPULAR song.

A song whose maximum chart was #44 does not seem like a "hit" to me.

Damn, we can't talk about ANYTHING without starting an argument around here...

One hit wonders usually do not have decade long careers with multiple multi-platimun records either.
Most charts usually chart the top 50 or top 100, but radios only concentrate on the top 40 and MTV is even worse.

When (I believe it was) VH1 had a One-Hit-Wonder countdown, they had to give a definition.  As I recall, they said that it was either only one song that made it to the charts OR one song that made it considerably higher than all of their other songs.

I'm pretty sure that Sir Mix-a-Lot applies.

Crash Test Dummies rock...completely. They had a few hits though... Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm was one, God Shuffled his Feet and Afternoons & Coffeespoons were all over the airways.

I wouldn't know a music chart if one bit me in the ass though. The last time I looked to see where a particular song was on the charts, it was the 70's.

You can listen to any radio station that caters to the hip hop crowd, and you will here more Sir Mix a Lot songs than just Baby got Back. I know this is the case in California, Washington, and even in Oregon.

^^^

Fine, but look at the 2nd part of the definition.  "Baby Got Back" reached a level of popularity 100x that of any of his other songs.   ...not just in terms of radio play and sales, but also in terms of cultural reach.

But not until the video was banned from MTV to late hours. As a fan I was listening to that album as soon as it came out, and played that song for my friends who had not heard it yet, but as soon as that video came out, BAM it went to the next level. I do not even think it is his best song.

Even Burger King made a parody commercial of Baby Got Back.
