Title: MLB Post Season Awards
Post by: Fau Teixeira on November 16, 2009, 03:21:46 pm
He received 17 1st place votes

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4660425

I think this is well deserved. he was on a tear for the marlins especially in the 2nd half of the season.

Hopefully he can keep this up this coming year and give the marlins a pretty strong top of the order.

Hell yeah, Chris deserved this award in spades... but it's Coghlan...no "u."

I agree that he deserved it but I thought I was just being a homer by considering him.  I'm glad that other "experts" thought so as well.

(I also had Josh Johnson penciled in for Cy Young at one point last season)

^ Fixed.  ;D  Dunno why I put A's in the Comeback Player when I had it right in the Silver Slugger.  Must have looked at it wrong while transcribing.

Coghlan did indeed deserve it for the NL.

Personally I was going for Elvis Andrus in the AL, but I'm okay with Andrew Bailey. :D

Elvis was my pick as well!

I had both Elvis and Coghlan in a 14-team keeper league this season...love them both, and I got more trade offers for those two down the stretch than any of the veteran stars on my roster. I may end up making a deal to move Elvis before our next draft though, because as good as he is, my middle infield trio is so talented for a 14-teamer (Utley-Rollins-Kinsler) that I feel I can move him to shore up my rotation (currently Carpenter, Peavy and 4 kids from the Bad News Bears).

Coghlan was definitely the ROY though, imo...the dude was a multi-hit machine.

^ You are welcome Maine.  I figured all the guys who get awards should be honored.

Greinke wins the AL Cy Young. Shockingly, they picked the right guy for the award. Zack just destroyed everyone in sight. Felix was a great pitcher this season, but he has bad luck to have his best season be in 2009 with Greinke.

Rookie of the year last year.  Gold glove and silver slugger this year.  My boy Longo is a stud!

Yes, even though his team sucks, he had a great year and totally deserved it.

Cy Young = right call.  Although Zach got hit late this season a couple times.  With King Felix down his neck I wouldn't have been surprised had it gone the other way.

Tim Lincecum wins NL Cy Young!

Holy ass raping, Cards fans!

Thanks for noticing.

Were these two even paying attention?  WTF???

Quote
Two voters, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus and Keith Law of ESPN.com, did not include Carpenter on their ballots. Carroll had Wainwright in the top spot, Lincecum second and Arizona's Dan Haren third. Law voted for Lincecum, Atlanta's Javier Vazquez and Wainwright in third. Those were the only votes in any position for Haren and Vazquez.

As a very big fan of all things Baseball Prospectus, I'd say that if Carroll voted for Wainright, he had pretty good statistical reason. He's not a mainstream pundit who tries to give the expected response though, no doubt about it.

I can understand the Wainright vote.

I can't understand them leaving Carp off the ballot.  We were assuming (wrongly) that one of our guys would win it.  :(

Next year's NL Cy Young winner... The Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw.

You heard it here first. ;)

I think Vasquez and Webb were 2-3 in some sabermetric stat like FiP or VORP. So, that explains that.

Keith Law was trained in scouting and is very intelligent, so I won't bash his ballot. I would rather bash the ballots of the guy who voted Wainwright first based on his W-L record and rather than more important stats like ERA and WHIP.

Winning is not the whole point?  Did you even watch a single game that Wainiwright pitched?

Title: Re: MLB Post Season Awards

Winning is not the whole point?
I would have to say that when it comes to the Cy Young winning is not the whole point. The spirit of the award is to give it to the most dominant pitcher regardless of wins, (see Zach Grienke).  For example voters would more like vote for a guy who had 16 wins, but an era of 2.5 then the would for a guy with 21 wins and an era of 3.5.

With that said, I still think its horseshit that neither Cards pitcher won over Lincecum.

^ Cardinal Nation thanks you for your support.  We still get upset over the whole Bonds over Pujols for MVP stuff.

Title: Re: MLB Post Season Awards

Albert Pujols is the NL MVP. :)

Title: Re: MLB Post Season Awards
Post by: EDGECRUSHER on November 24, 2009, 09:12:14 pm
I think Lincecum should've won because he pitched more innings and was less reliant on his defense due to his high strikeout total. That being said, if Carpenter won, it wouldn't have been a bad choice either. Arguments can be made for both guys.

Pujols and Mauer were the right decisions. The voters pretty much nailed it this year, with the exception of Gold Gloves, but I think the managers decide that shit anyways.

^ The Cardinals coaches teach their pitchers to pitch to contact to keep the pitch count down and increase the number of innings they can pitch.  Strikeouts are over rated.

Title: Re: MLB Post Season Awards
Post by: EDGECRUSHER on November 24, 2009, 11:31:23 pm
Strikeouts can very well be overrated at times. I mean, Justin Verlander had more K's than Greinke, but their ERA's were far apart. However, if most things are equal, I lean towards the pitcher with more K's because it's all on him. If you have a great defense, it can skew the real impact you have. To be fair, so can a shitty defense.
