That said, I think NJ has a nice trio of young players in Devin Harris, Brook Lopez and CDR that they can build around, and I think a good young PG and good young center are two of the most important things you can have for an NBA team. Actually for cash and a draft pick that would turn into Rudy Fernandez (another player who would be aces in Phoenix' system)...who they then dealt to Portland for cash. Talk about having Nash's heir-apparent in the fold and then letting him go...yeesh! Why would a player want to play in a big market anyway? Take the case of Carmelo Anthony. Denver is seen as a small market but with 500+ cable channels, the Internet and everything else, your market is as big as your imagination. I think his jersey is in the top five. Now if you go back to the 80's which CBS had the NBA contract. You probably wouldn't even see a glimpse of Anthony until the first round of the playoffs late at night. That's what happened to Alex English who was poetry in motion to watch but not too many people saw him play until the All Star game or first round of the playoffs. Back in the early 80's if you lived in South Florida you got Sixers-Celtics, Sixers-Knicks, Lakers-Sixers, Lakers-Celtics and this was before Ted Turners Superstation came along. So I can see a player wanting to get out of Kansas City, Oakland or Utah to get more coverage and more endorsements. But what made the NBA great in the mid to late 80's is that you had players willing to go into small markets, establish the game and themselves (Karl Malone-Utah, Clyde Drexler - Portland and even Run TMC (Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin at Golden State) My point is that it can't be exposure that a player is seeking and it can't be the money. I think a player, if they love the game (like LeBron says that he does) is better off where they are at and win championships while building a legacy at the same time. Shaq's championships to me ring hollow because its no secret that the Lakers are the NBA's West Coast flagship franchise. Tim Duncan won a championship with David Robinson but won a couple of more in a media market |
