ORLANDO, Fla. -- Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow has walked a lot of red carpets the past four years.

But Thursday night, for the first time, he did so with a date on his arm.

Tebow escorted 20-year-old Kelly Faughnan, of Virginia, at The Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show in Orlando, WJXT-TV reported.

Faughnan had a brain tumor removed last year, and she asked to go to the awards show to see Tebow because she's a big fan.

An ESPN producer set up a meeting between the two, and Tebow asked if she wanted to walk the red carpet with him.

I don't love him or hate him as a football player.  However, I think it's sad that this guy gets trashed (not in this article but by football fans) for being a decent human being.  I guess if he drank and partied and slept around he would have more "cred" in the eyes of some.

I honestly think that Tebow is gay.  He uses this kind of a stuff as a reason not to bring a "legitimate" date.

I am happy for him, though, and glad that he's using the opportunity to make a good night for someone else.  Cynics say that he's only doing it for the publicity, but even if he is, so what?

Being gay doesn't exactly mesh with the whole Soldier of Christ thing.  It's my understanding that that kind of stuff is "frowned upon" in the Christian community.

You keep saying this and I know you are being sincere so I have to ask ... do you have a special gaydar or something? I mean have you nailed other guys who haven't come out?  I really don't see him as being gay but then again I know 20 something virgins too. I believe the truth will come out sooner or later if he is. If he isn't gay no amount of happy marriage and kids will convince the skeptics.

I agree with CF, Dave.  He's holding to his Christian values as best as he can, and it's very difficult for anyone to do that in this spotlight, seeing as he's got women wanting him everywhere he goes.

I don't have special gaydar, and I've only really "spotted" the gay kids from high school that I knew to be obvious (but before they did).  But I find that Tebow's private life is very inconsistent.  He seems to be very open in cases like this where he's doing some kind of charity or evangelizing, but very closed off and awkward when he's asked about girlfriends or sex or anything like that, leading me to believe that there's something there.

If you're a college senior that plays QB for the Gators, and you're as good looking as Tebow, there's a reason that the only girl you're seen with in your whole 4 years is a charity case with a brain tumor, and "God" ain't the reason.  Not having sex is one thing -- fine -- I can buy that.  Being completely devoid of any relationships with women is another.

(I'm also not saying this as a shot on Tebow.  I think it would be refreshing to have an "out" gay athlete.  It would also help reconcile some of Tebow's weird behavior, in my eyes.)

LMFAO! I agree completely, Dave.

The signs are all there. Get your flame retardant suit on!

Tebow's not gay, he's just sickly sweet.

Nothing wrong with my gaydar...I can spot a swisher at 100 sashays.

I don't think he is gay, either.  I think he is just trying to stick to his Christian principles.

Where is the Christian principle that says you can't show any interest in women through college?

1. Uphold your Christian principles.
2. Avoid getting married while you're really young (and still trying to finish college).
3. Have sex.

Pick any two.

If he's smart enough not to get married in his early 20s, and he wants to uphold his Christian principles, then he's pretty much doing the only thing he can.  The last thing that a superstar QB that's attempting to "keep himself pure" should do is hang around hot college girls.

I don't care for the description of Tebow's good behavior as "Christian principles." I imagine that most rabbis, imams, and secular guidance counselors would endorse being nice to the sick girl.

If he were Jewish or Muslim, I would say "Jewish principles" or "Muslim principles".

I was referring to his chastity.

Dave, I'm surprised. Do you really think hes gay?I wouldn't put anything past anybody but if he is, he's covering it up real good. Maybe he does have a love interest somewhere and meets her at Perkins for late night "dinner".

Yes, I really think he's gay.  ...or at least that it's a distinct possibility.

I find it odd that some people seem to be very critical of Tebow, yet show understanding towards Tiger.

^^^ Gotta agree with that sentiment completely...

Wish there could be a "completely honest" poll that would show how many people are secretly hoping that Tebow turns out to be gay, or a psycho or a nazi or something...anything that would tear him down.

I would hope that being gay wouldn't tear him down.

I don't think he's gay.  Seth MacFarlane from "Family Guy" is gay.  I think trying to do the Christian thing is more accurate or he's got a chick on the side that's really good at keeping secrets or he's going with President Clinton's definition of sex.  If he is gay, I don't want to know about it.

I don't think he did this for the publicity either.  Tebow seems to be pretty genuine and I'm hoping he's not Tiger-style.  Even if he isn't as good as he seems, I couldn't care less.  He'll make it to the NFL, be mediocre at best, and then probably do more good through charity work or with his NFL cash than he ever would doing anything else.  I'm also glad he didn't win the Heisman a second time, but that's just being spiteful.

You guys gotta realize, he's lived a sheltered life all his life up until the point where he went to UF.  He was home-schooled by his parents from Kindergarten all the way to 12th grade.  It says he played for Ponte Vedra Beach Nease High School because he lived in that school's district and by law, the school had to allow him to play.

Think about it, you've been living a sheltered life but happen to be a star QB, then all of a sudden you're thrust in the spotlight at a big time national contending program, you'd feel awkward too.

Being home schooled doesn't necessarily mean he was sheltered although that is the general impression I think most of us get when we hear the term.

Guys, he's a devout Christian who believs in no sex before marriage.  These people do exist; I've known some of them even here in Miami.  Granted, in my experience they get married at, like, 21 (so they can get down to business, I like to say).

I don't think he's gay (nor would I care if he were).  I think any awkwardness he displays regarding women or sexuality comes from the fact that he probably gets ribbed / bothered/ or otherwise pestered about it all the time by people who think what he does isn't normal.

He's been the most hyped up bum ever for the last 4 years. Only now is he finding out that he is awkward socially?

He is either very gay, or very religious. I hope that he is gay.

You aren't understanding what I'm saying.  Just because he's not going to have sex doesn't mean that he's not allowed to have an interest in girls.

I'm curious why you think he has no interest in girls? I haven't seen Colt McCoy's girlfriend. I haven't seen a lot of football players girlfriends. There must be a lot more gayness in college football than I realized. There aren't any players interested in girls now that I think about it.

I was thinking the same.  Fast forward to Tiger or currently "Cheetah". He was getting sex everywhere for how long and we never saw him with any of these girls!! I dare say Tiger is more famous than Tebow with many more poparazzi following him.

Tebow has publicly said
I'm curious why you think he has no interest in girls?

I've heard him speak on the subject and give an answer to the likes of "right now, I'm concentrating on football."
Plus, there are rumors of him dating a specific girl with which he has pictures, but they've been proven false.

Quote
I haven't seen Colt McCoy's girlfriend.

I have.

I'm not obsessing over this or anything.  I just find Tebow's behavior strange, and I'm betting this is why.
