Wow. He had kept himself out of trouble for about two years, so its ashame to see this happen to him.....

Source: Bengals WR Henry on life support

Updated Dec 16, 2009 10:08 PM EDT
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry is on life support after falling out of the back of a pickup truck in North Carolina, a source has told FOXSports.com's Alex Marvez. The source described the situation as "dire."

Henry was found in the road in south Charlotte "apparently suffering life-threatening injuries," according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Henry was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, the local trauma unit, but spokesman Scott White said he was not listed in hospital records and had no other information.

Police spokesman Robert Fey said officers were stationed near Henry's hospital room, but he had no information on Henry's condition.

Police said a dispute began at a Home just before noon and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his unidentified fiancee was driving away from the residence.

"The domestic situation continued between the operator and Mr. Henry," the police said in a statement. "At some point while she was driving, Mr. Henry came out of the back of the vehicle."

Fey wouldn't name the woman and said no charges would be filed on Wednesday.

Henry was found on a residential street about a half mile away from the home when police were called to the scene after a medic report that a man was down.

A woman who identified herself as the fiancee's mother but declined to give her name told the Charlotte Observer that Henry and his fiancee had been staying at her house while he was on injured reserve and they were making plans for their wedding.

She said she wasn't home at the time of the dispute and wasn't sure exactly what happened, but she said her daughter is at Henry's bedside at the hospital.

Henry's agent, Kenneth Rush, did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages left by The Associated Press.

Henry broke his left forearm during a win over Baltimore on Nov. 8, had surgery and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Charlotte is home to his fiancee's parents, the Bengals said.

Team spokesman Jack Brennan said he had little information other than Henry was badly hurt.

"We are aware he was in an accident and that his injuries are very serious," Brennan said. "We are obviously staying in touch with the situation and are ready to offer whatever assistance we can."

Henry is in the final year of his contract with the Bengals, who let him go after his fifth arrest following the 2007 season. Owner Mike Brown then brought him back a few months later, signing him to a two-year deal, and Henry had stayed out of trouble since his return.

“Chris is Chris. He’s personable with his guys, but quiet,” left tackle Andrew Whitworth said on the Bengals' Web site. “You could tell he missed being out there with us. He was supportive. He’s a big part of what we are. I really admire how he carries himself, how he's changed his life, and how he's made his career his passion. That’s what this team has done. He's one of the guys that has helped give this team that attitude. We’re worried about him and praying for him.”

A deep threat, Henry was fourth among Bengals receivers this season with 12 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns at the time of his injury.

The Bengals' third-round pick from West Virginia in 2005, the speedy Henry was a key part of Cincinnati's playoff team as a rookie. He's caught 119 passes for 1,826 yards and 21 touchdowns in five seasons, but has also been plagued by off-field woes.

He was suspended for two games by the league in 2006 and the first eight games of 2007. The Bengals released him following his fifth arrest that offseason, but Brown decided to bring him back during training camp over the objections of coach Marvin Lewis.

Henry had to miss the first four games of 2008, his punishment for the offseason arrest on an assault charge. The charge was dropped after his trial ended in a hung jury.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I hope he pulls through.  If not, I hope that woman ends up being cellmates with Rae Carruth.

Why? She was leaving the scene of a domestic dispute and he jumped into the back of a moving truck. How does this compare with hiring hitmen to murder your girlfriend because she was pregnant?
I hope if he does survive he never plays again, and never collects a dime of any sports related money period.

I disagree.  I hope he does survive, plays again, and is successful at the pro level.  I've always been very hard on players like him that couldn't keep their nose clean, but he has been out of trouble for the past 2 years.  It would be a great story if he could survive this, and contribute greatly to his local community and the NFL.  He's always had the talent to be a great WR, and I think it would be the "Comeback Player of the Decade" award if he could do it.  First things first though....I hope he lives through this.

I know this sounds like rainbows and unicorns, but still, it would be an inspirational story.

It has not been two years since his last arrest and it is obvious he is a ticking time bomb. This guy has had a huge amount of chances. He does not deserve the privilege to play anymore, he needs to become a regular working joe like the rest of us.

I saw an interview with Chris in the offseason and really liked what I saw. I have no doubt he was putting his career as a priority and was leaving his troubled past behind. I really hope he pulls through this challenge.

How do you know she wasn't the problem?  I've seen NFL players come out on the losing end of a domestic dispute.

Domestic dispute does not necessarily mean domestic violence.  It could have been an argument.  No where does it say he put his hands on her.

I hope this sends a message to all pickup truck drivers, particularly teenage ones..... the truck bed is for cargo, not for passengers.

I must have been under a rock yesterday because for some reason I did not see anything about this story until he had already passed. Seemed like he was really starting to get his life back on track. Really sad.....RIP Slim!!!!!

A better message from this is that it is very stupid and potentially lethal to attempt to jump into the bed of a moving truck.

Perhaps a better message to be taken from this...if your rich fiancee who pays all your bills falls out of the back of the truck your driving and is laying in the road, you should probably stop to see if he could use some medical assistance.

Good point.  The question is, did he fall out of the truck bed immediately after jumping into it, or did he fall out later?  The article does say that he was found a half a mile down the road from his house but he jumped into the truck bed as his fiance was driving away from his house.

Why would you do such a thing? Don't you know anything about "ghetto love"? LOL!

The police are investigating the 911 calls in this case.  Turns out there was a call regarding him beating on the cab of the truck, then another call about him lying in the street unconscious.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4750615

My guess is that they got into it, she jumped in the truck to drive away, he went after her, jumped on the truck bed, and started beating on it.  Then she either swerved or hit a bump and knocked him off and kept going.

Can you really fall out of a truck by hitting a bump, though?  Physics doesn't really work like that.  Your momentum keeps you going the same speed as the truck.  With no information, I would postulate that he was trying to gain access to the cab, possibly trying to crawl in through a window or climb over the top or something.

If you are standing up in a pickup a sharp turn, a quick accelaration, hard braking, or just being drunk would be enough to fall out.  And I would bet dollars to donuts he was not sober during this.

Hoodie is right.  Think about it, you're standing up in a truck bed trying to beat on the top of the cab, all of a sudden, the truck stops suddenly or accelerates suddenly or hits a bump.... that'll knock you off balance and you can easily fall out.
