Title: Pete Carroll, will this time around be better?
Post by: raptorsfan29 on January 12, 2010, 12:04:29 am
title says it all, discuss.

For those living under a rock, he signed with the Seattle Seahawks to be their head coach.

I vagely remember him coaching the patriots, i remember seeing him on tv drive off from foxboro after he got fired, but that is about it.

I can't really go on anything but record and he had an above .500 record with the pats, can't really talk about his coaching since i never really saw it.

He coached one year with the Jets in 1994, and while they started out strong, their season concluded with four losses.  Then Jets owner Leon Hess fired him and hired Rich Kotite who couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

He then took the Pats job in 1997 after Bill Parcells left, and while he had an above .500 record, the team regressed every year.

I remember Carroll making a choking motion after one of our kickers missed one (I think it was Stoyo).  I've always hated him since then.  He also coached the Jets in my heyday of hatred for that team.

Every time I hear his name I think of that game.  He is just like Spurrier ... he needs to keep his game at a level where his recruiting wins for him. He isn't a very good coach!!

I will never forgive this.  Pete Carroll is, and always will be, a grade-A a-hole.  I hope his NFL career takes a downward spiral.  Jerk.

Pete Carroll is a good recruiter......brings in great players and has had the luxury of being at USC the past decade. He will not get to recruit and he will once again suck donkey balls in the NFL.

To answer the question, though, yes -- I think this time around will be better for Carroll.  He has "cred" now and won't be on such a strict timeline, plus he'll have the ability to lure good coordinators to him.

Seattle is in such a notoriously horrible division that he has nothing to do but succeed. Once Kurt Warner retires that division is wide open.

He could be.  The thing that I remember most and bothered me horribly at the time was he always had a "deer in the headlight" look on the sidelines.  It didn't instill much confidence in me as a fan and I doubt it instilled much confidence for the players.

While I was not thrilled with him as a coach, a lot of my dislike for him, was he simply wasn't Parcells, the best coach the Patriots had had up to that point.

It is hard to blame all of the decline of the Patriots on him, it quite possibly might be the decline of Bledsoe.

'96 (Parcells) 11-5; lose the superbowl
'97 (Carroll) 10-6; win wild card weekend lose division
'98 (Carroll) 9-7; lose wild card weekend
'99 (Carroll) 8-8; miss the playoffs.

At first glance that looks like the team is in decline because of Carroll, but .....

'00 (Belichick) 5-11
'01  (Belichick/Bledsoe) 0-2
'01 (Belichick/Brady) 11-3 win superbowl.

While Belichick is a much better coach than Carroll. I think both were hamstrung by an overrated QB that Bob Kraft absolutely loved and see that as more of the reason for the decline than Carroll.

I think alot of Carroll's success or failure will have to do with how he spent his time at USC.  BB coach of Browns and BB coach of Browns are two different coaches.  BB used the 5 years in between to evaluate his mistakes and improve.  Norv Turner is a better coach now than he was when he coached the Redskins.  Will Carroll repeat the mistakes he made?  Only time will tell.

he could ruin a wet dream.

If Pete Carroll showed up in one of my dreams it would indeed be ruined.
