Title: We are a statistic Post by: CF DolFan on January 15, 2010, 09:28:38 am Well it has finally happened. My wife has been struggling to keep her job for the last couple of years and they let her go a few days ago. She was contracted so she has no benefits including unemployment. That means we just immediaely lost 60 percent of our income. We can not even come close to paying our bills and our reserves have been eliminated from the last couple of years of a struggling economy. There is no longer a "Peter" to rob so that we can pay "Paul".
"Gloom, despair and agony on me-e! Deep dark depression, excessive misery-y! If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all! Gloom, despair and agony on me-e-e!" Just kidding. I'm not depressed. I feel confident something will happen!! Anyone got a box for rent? ;-) Title: Re: We are a statistic Post by: Phishfan on January 15, 2010, 09:58:22 am That is too bad CF. I didn't really expect this type of post and was hoping to read something more entertaining. Keep your chin up.

My wife has been struggling to keep her job for the last couple of years and they let her go a few days ago. She was contracted so she has no benefits including unemployment. I'm not sure how it works in Florida, but (in socialist California) I'm technically a contractor, yet I'll get unemployment if I get laid off. They still take unemployment insurance out of my paychecks, so...Title: Re: We are a statistic Post by: JVides on January 18, 2010, 02:05:53 pm Unfortunately too many of us are beconig just a number on a report. Yesterday at my mandatory class for unemployment they said that the real number of people unemployed when everyone is taken into account is over 18%. Yeah, I remember talking about employment in statistics class. The unemployment number has to do with people who are unemployed but still part of the workforce, or something like that. Once you go a certain period of time and remain unemployed, or exit the workforce (retired, don't want to work) you no longer count towards the statistic. Sorry to hear, CF. As for your wife, if she paid into the Florida UC fund somehow, she could make an unemployment claim. Technically, if she fell more into the line of employee than contractor, she could make a claim to Florida and have Florida re-categorize her as an employee (I have never done this or helped someone do this, but employers abuse employees by making them "contractors" all the time and I know there are avenues). Title: Re: We are a statistic Post by: fyo on January 18, 2010, 06:41:10 pm There are a lot of myths about how unemployment numbers are calculated.
From http://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm : Who is counted as unemployed? Persons are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work. Actively looking for work may consist of any of the following activities: * Contacting: o An employer directly or having a job interview o A public or private employment agency o Friends or relatives o A school or university employment center * Sending out resumes or filling out applications * Placing or answering advertisements * Checking union or professional registers * Some other means of active job search Title: Re: We are a statistic Post by: CF DolFan on January 19, 2010, 08:44:41 am Thanks guys! She has filed so we will see where that goes. It obviously never hurts to try. the bad news is even if wshe gets it it's pretty minimal in comparison but everything helps.
My wife is a Mortgage Underwriter. She is the person who approves the loan. It's her butt on the line to verify all info and guidlines are met. She doesn't actually work for the banks that she works in but is contracted from the M.I. company. Every loan she underwrites her company get the M.I. on. In this market where even the best credit people are defaulting it's a rough business. Everyone is looking for scapegoats and she, as well as her coworkers, are under constant attack from both the bank and the MI companies. Neither wants to be responsible for the default so she gets caught in the middle with numerous audits. It's actually pretty crazy and I think that mentally the time away is doing her some good. Unfortunately the reality of the financial situation isn't helping!! :-) Title: Re: We are a statistic Post by: dolphantom on January 21, 2010, 04:27:12 pm ^^^^ I wish you well, CF . have faith my friend , it will turn around.....
