Dansby: Parcells Said I'm "A Hell of A Player"


With all the hoopla about this free agent receiver and that free agent receiver, the quest for an available linebacker has fallen somewhat under the rader in Dolphins Country (it's emerging third-world, ruled by The Memory of Dan Marino, and survives on a gross domestic product of middle fingers aimed at New York).

Problem is, the Dolphins' linebacker situation is darn near a tragedy. Were it captured by satellite, you'd see a giant, oozing morass occasionally spitting out hairballs.

Enter Karlos Dansby, possible savior of Miami. The Arizona Cardinal is about to be the best available free agent linebacker on the market, and he's pegged Miami as one of the places he'll go. As he said on WQAM this week:

    It would be huge....to come down there to Miami to a program that’s building up and becoming a contender in the tough eastern conference in the AFC. I like their attitude. I like how they approach the game...Parcells, man, hit your boy Karlos Dansby up, man. I’m ready, man. I think I’m a proven player. I think I can bring a lot to the table. I’m definitely what you need.

Well, we'd love for Bill Parcells to love to have you, Karlos with a K. Though the Dolphins aren't entirely bereft of talent at linebacker, Dansby could be the playmaker the unit didn't have this year. Against the Packers in the playoffs, Ronnie Brown's old teammate tipped an Aaron Rodgers pass for an interception, forced a fumble on the next drive, and scored the game-winning fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Dansby is 28, which means he is what he is already. But that's a nice middle ground between aging vets and projects, whether the project is Cameron Wake or a draftee who needs time to adjust to the game. Nabbing Dansby would allow the Dolphins more choice in the draft, too: shore up the spot with someone like Rolando McClain, or look for first-round talent at another position of need.

And he already has the seal of approval: 

    Parcells told me one time when we were playing Dallas in Dallas – and they beat us bad, beat us real bad – and leaving that field, Parcells told me, he was like, 'Dansby, you’re a hell of a player.' And that kind of stuck with me ever since that day. That was my second season in and for Parcells to tell a young player something like that – that’s going to stick.'

GYEAH! Look, we know it's too early for this, and silly to get too excited because if this doesn't happen it's not something that should upset Dolphins fans. But it's a good fit and a tidy solution, and, well, that'd be nice.


If the Dolphins could get Dansby AND draft Rolando McClain, holy shit, that would be a beastly center of the field.  I'm sure Dansby will come with a huge price tag, but getting rid of Porter and either Crowder or Akin (or both) in this uncapped year would free up a lot of money and could make it a possibility.

I'm all for it.  He's a hell of a lot better than what we have at MLB

No doubt...a MLB duo of Dansby-McClain would be nothing short of droolworthy. Talk about going from the outhouse to the penthouse at that position...

If you do that, do you move Channing to OLB?  He played fairly well at that position for two years under Saban.

Not in a 3-4 you don't.  He has 2.5 career sacks.  We cut Crowder if we sign Dansby.

too expensive... build through the draft. you can find upgrades at ilb in the middle rounds of this deep draft.

I agree. I've watched Dansby his whole career and to me, he was the NFL's best kept secret. You could see the enormous potential. But that was Dansby at 24. He's 28. I don't think that he had a good year last year. Maybe it was the defensive scheme that they were running.

The Cardinals defense is nothing to write home to Mom about. I say that you get your linebackers through the draft.

If the price is right, and he wants to come to Miami, he's better than what we've got now with our two journeymen ILBs in Crowder and Ayodele . If someone else is willing to pay a king's ransom for him, let him go.

Get Danby and his team mate  Antrel Rolle
and start looking for playoff tickets.

Rumor is the Dolphins are very serious about going after Dansby.

i think that's a good move .. this is an uncapped year .. cut ayodele .. toss tons of money at dansby .. massive upgrade right there

I really have no problem going after Dansby at this point, as long as it doesn't prevent us from grabbing McClain to build on for the future. That said, I have a funny feeling that if Miami lands Dansby as a FA, they will look to other positions for their first round pick in April.

Crowder is a huge weakness in our defense. He lets more tackles slip by then he makes. He is not athletic enough to play sideline to sideline, and he has trouble reading offenses.  They need to seriously upgrade the posistion to be a contender.

Word on the local AM stations here in AZ is that Karlos Dansby is on his way to Miami to sign with the Dolphins. Not sure what you guys think about this or what you know about him but having personally seen him in action over the course of the last few years this guy is a beast and a great addition to the Phins!!!!!

This would be awesome. I just read over at footballoutsiders.com that they've started tracking "broken tackles". Ayodele is numero uno among all inside linebackers with the highest percentage of broken tackles (16%). Crowder is third (11.5%) :(

Crowder is only 26, so he seems worth keeping around, but I wouldn't mind seeing a draft pick spent on an ILB.

As I said before, I would have no problem with Miami signing Dansby, because he is hands-down better than any ILB currently on the roster. My only semi-concern would be that signing Dansby would cause the Irish Tuna Coalition to look elsewhere than ILB for their pick at #12...and I still really want to see McClain in a Phins uniform. ;)

Anything that increases the overall talent of this roster is a good thing though, so I look forward to seeing this one get official.

By tomorrow, LB Karlos Dansby is expected to finalize an agreement with Miami. But all indications are that Dansby will be a Dolphin.
