Title: The NFC is a joke.
Post by: Dave Gray on October 24, 2010, 11:05:03 pm
I think that the 7 best teams in the league are from the AFC.

The Saints are no good, and I've been saying that for a while.  They are all mid-range teams: Washington, Chicago, Philly, etc -- they have no consistency.

Watching this Vikings/Packers game is like a contest to see who can throw the most picks.  Just awful football.

Weird how things come full circle. In the 80s and early 90s, the AFC was a joke.

I think this year is a good opportunity for the Giants to come out on top. We're playing well, we've gone back to the fundamentals of what made us good during that super bowl run 3 years ago, and we've won 3 straight. In that same year, the talk of the town was also the AFC - how strong they were and how great the 18-0 Pats were.

Two of the last three Super Bowls have been won by the NFC against the 18-0 Pats and against the 14 in a row Colts.

Pretty small sample size.  7 of the the last 10 have been won the the AFC.

Not really.  There were a couple powerhouse NFL teams (generally the 49ers and Cowboys) in the 90s.  The rest of the NFC was awful.  The AFC was very balanced and deep.  People seem to forget that a lot of the Super Bowl wins by the NFC were actually upsets:  The Broncos were double digit favorites over the Redskins (although this was in the 80s).  The Bills, in two of their Super Bowls, were favored to win (the Giants game was a huge upset).

The AFC always seems to be deeper.  They might not have one super power like a 13-3 team that always seems to come out of the NFC, but they always seem to have a whole bunch of 12-4, 11-5, 10-7 teams.  After the drop off in the NFL it seems the best you generally find is 9-7.

Whenever you're talking Super Bowls, you're talking small sample size.

If you want to look at dominance between conferences, Super Bowl wins is an incredibly poor measurement. I'm fully aware that it's pretty much the only number the vast majority of (casual) fans is interested in, but because the Super Bowl pits one team from each conference against each other (as opposed to, say, a combined playoff scenario), it all comes down to one game. As they say, any given Sunday...
