Title: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: CF DolFan on November 08, 2010, 08:06:51 am Our fans are the most chicken little fans in the NFL and I have no idea why. We are either under-respected and appreciated by the media or need to get rid of everyone and start over. There is no middle ground. I, like many of you, also follow a few other teams and it isn't nearly as bad. What is is about Miami that makes people so dramatic?
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Tenshot13 on November 08, 2010, 08:47:27 am I dunno man. I know Bucs fans are just as bad. I wont hold out hope until we are mathematically out of the playoff race.
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Phishfan on November 08, 2010, 08:50:20 am I know Bucs fans are just as bad. Over on this side of town you would think the Bucs won the last several Super Bowls if you talk to their fans. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: CF DolFan on November 08, 2010, 08:55:39 am Over on this side of town you would think the Bucs won the last several Super Bowls if you talk to their fans. That's exactly what I mean. In general they are way more loyal to the team than Miami fans. Even the Jacksonville fans aren't as bad and Del Rio has been there 7 years. I'm not speaking every single fan but in general, they are behind there teams win or lose. Of course they buy more tickets when they win but that is a separate issue. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: bsfins on November 08, 2010, 09:53:11 am ^^ better distribution of the better drugs in the south part of the state? :D
I will keep from hijacking the thread anymore, especially with the middle america fans.... Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Dolphster on November 08, 2010, 10:59:45 am Good thread topic. I've lived in quite a few places and have gotten to see the fans in many cities. All in all, I would say that the majority of Dolphins fans are not very "football educated". I've seen half the stadium boo the QB for throwing the ball away when throwing the ball away was clearly the right decision to make. I think fans in most NFL cities live week to week to a certain extent. But I've never seen a fan base like this one that claims the Fins are going to the playoffs if they win a game and want to fire everyone if they lose a game. I love the Dolphins. I root for them every week. But I understand that they are what they are. They are essentially a .500 team. Last year I predicted their final record perfectly. This year, I picked them to go 8-8 and that is probably close to what they will do. Doesn't mean I love them any less, but they are what they are at this point.
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Dave Gray on November 08, 2010, 12:45:32 pm I think that there is a sense of entitlement with people down here. ...like we deserve to be good. Someone has to win, someone has to lose, and someone has to be middle of the road. We were strangely good (best winning percentage in pro sports) for a long, long time, and I think people just took 8 wins for granted.
Because of that, I think that it's expected and when you don't achieve that every single year, people want you gone. I agree, also, that our fans down here (and maybe everywhere, I don't know) are uneducated and don't take time to think: What is the problem, and how is that best solved? Instead, it's fire everyone. Meanwhile, when you look at teams that are constantly turning over leadership, they're consistently terrible. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: masterfins on November 08, 2010, 02:04:43 pm The Bills fans can be pretty bad, I've gone to a couple of their games the last couple years, and they are booing the team by the start of the 4th quarter; of course they have reason to boo.
I think part of the problem is that the Fins actually have a good team and they are not playing up to their potential. Not to mention their offensive game plan is very boring. I think part of the problem is that the Fins actually have a good team and they are not playing up to their potential. Not to mention their offensive game plan is very boring. This is the problem with me. It just seems like we have some pretty good talent on this team, and to just score 1 or 2 touch downs a game, if that? And then add in the consistently horrible offensive playcalling, and you get people asking for changes. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: MaineDolFan on November 08, 2010, 02:45:57 pm I don't believe that Miami fans are in this class by themselves. I covered the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins for years; each fan base of each team I listed are the exact same way.
I believe that you simply don't know about fans in, say Kansas City, that react the same way...because you aren't paying attention to Kansas City outside of box scores and highlights. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: CF DolFan on November 08, 2010, 03:07:22 pm I don't believe that Miami fans are in this class by themselves. I covered the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins for years; each fan base of each team I listed are the exact same way. I would agree with that but I do know Buc and Jaguars fans. The Bucs were selling out long before they won a Super Bowl and after. In general, like Phish alluded to, they do not act like that. maybe they are the exception then and Miami is more the norm. I believe that you simply don't know about fans in, say Kansas City, that react the same way...because you aren't paying attention to Kansas City outside of box scores and highlights. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: StL FinFan on November 08, 2010, 03:08:36 pm Agreed with Maine. I have first hand knowledge of only one fan base that is different.
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Frimp on November 08, 2010, 03:19:42 pm Bengals fans were ready to lynch the field, I know that. When Sean Smith picked off Palmer, I heard the loudest BOOO I've ever heard in my life. I talked to several fans after the game, and they were saying that everyone from Lewis to TO to Palmer to the kicker needed to be fired.
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on November 08, 2010, 03:27:23 pm Being in AZ and a season ticket holder for the Cards for the last 10 years I can tell you it's the same way here. I think all fans think they know better than and GM or Owner or Coach. Some cases they have a right to complain but most of the time it is Chicken Little like you stated above.
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: bsfins on November 08, 2010, 03:43:10 pm I've started to type this 3 times...then thought nahhh...
I think it's local media driven,in people that live in NFL cities (direct markets) tend to get columnist covering the teams...I'm in the South side of the state, the St.Louis Dispatch, and the K.C. star are available, but not really wide spread read. My local media, the NBC,Fox,ABC,CBS affiliates, and the local paper for most part tend to report what's going on, rarely criticize the Chiefs, and Rams. I feel the fans here are much less chicken little.... Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: MikeO on November 08, 2010, 06:24:37 pm The Dolphins don't sell out playoff games. Playoff games are blacked out in Miami. Dolphins fans are bad fans for that reason alone. In other cities you see fist fights over getting playoff tickets!
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Frimp on November 08, 2010, 06:30:22 pm As far as I know, that has only happened once.
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: MikeO on November 08, 2010, 06:31:46 pm As far as I know, that has only happened once. Twice. But the last time Wayne bought up the extra tickets and eat the cost to let the game be aired on TV. And still, BIG PICTURE........one time is too many!! Seriously, can't sell out an NFL playoff game. That's pathetic! Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: MaineDolFan on November 09, 2010, 08:59:31 am Regarding filling the stadium --
You do realize that Miami plays in the 5th largest stadium in the league, right? There are only five teams that play in larger stadiums in the NFL: Denver, Jacksonville, Kansas City and Dallas. There are plenty of teams that play in stadiums that seat upwards of 10,000 less people than Sun Life does...and those teams aren't selling out, either. Let's not play the attendance game when it comes to gauging NFL team's popularity. The NFL has made a decided movement to make this a TV league. Have you noticed the TV contracts, by chance? Do you understand the revenue each team receives from the TV rights per game versus what they make at the gate? The NFL is not the NBA, MLB or, NHL. Attendance is not key to survival, nor should it be used to effectively gauge a city's interest in their franchise. Silly argument, really. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Phishfan on November 09, 2010, 09:09:24 am Great point, but your count is a bit off though. Giants Stadium & Cowboys Stadiums are larger and under normal conditions Alltel Stadium in Jax is smaller, but with expanded seating it is larger.
Oops, I missed you already included Dallas. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: CF DolFan on November 09, 2010, 10:18:15 am I've started to type this 3 times...then thought nahhh... Lil B ... I think you are right or at least on to something. I guess outside the market you really don't get the extreme views that create all the hysteria. I think the old Giants stadium was larger, the newer is under 75,000? Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Phishfan on November 09, 2010, 01:52:55 pm ^^^ Nope the new stadium is the second largest in the league. It holds over 80K.
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Pappy13 on November 09, 2010, 05:24:26 pm Oops, I missed you already included Dallas. Only in the last year. The new Dallas Cowboys stadium is a LOT bigger than the old one.Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: MikeO on November 09, 2010, 06:43:55 pm I don't care how big the stadium is. IT'S A PLAYOFF GAME!!! SELL IT OUT!!
No excuses! Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Frimp on November 09, 2010, 06:46:19 pm I don't care how big the stadium is. IT'S A PLAYOFF GAME!!! SELL IT OUT!! No excuses! So, I'm sure this means you're at every game? Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: StL FinFan on November 09, 2010, 07:01:00 pm Why would I want to spend hundreds of dollars just for a ticket when I could sit and watch for free from my living room or local tavern?
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: Frimp on November 09, 2010, 07:05:23 pm Why would I want to spend hundreds of dollars just for a ticket when I could sit and watch for free from my living room or local tavern? Because Mikeo said so? ;) Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: masterfins on November 09, 2010, 08:18:49 pm ^^^It's my fault they don't sell out, I've never been to a game in Miami. Of course I do live in upstate NY. I have seen the Fins many times in Buffalo, Foxboro, and Philly though. Sorry MikeO
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: StL FinFan on November 09, 2010, 08:24:00 pm Because Mikeo said so? ;) It also makes a "bit" of difference that I live approximately 1200 miles from Miami. Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: MikeO on November 09, 2010, 08:30:14 pm Im not talking about out of town Fin Fans. I am talking about the locals. God some things go right over all of your heads
Title: Re: Miami Dolphin Chicken Little fans Post by: StL FinFan on November 09, 2010, 09:07:39 pm Apparently, everything went right over your head.
