Title: Earlobes? What are they for?
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on December 08, 2010, 04:16:08 pm
Didn't want spin the other thread off course.  But something Pappy said got me thinking....

What the heck is the purpose of an earlobe?    I mean other than for nibbling on or poking all sorts of shinny metal through?

I know one person who has no earlobes she can hear without any problem.  Many people I know poke all kinds of crap in them.  And it doesn't seem to cause any harm.  Do they have any purpose?

It's purpose is to signal to your grand mother that you love them.  Kudo's to the first person who can explain this comment and the person to which I'm referring.

Wasn't that Carol Burnett? I thought it was her Mom, not her Grandmom (but I could be wrong). She'd tug on her ear at the end of the show as a signal to her.

Yes it was Carol Burnett and I too thought it was her mom and then I googled it and found out that it was her grandmother who raised her for the most part.

I suppose that early on in man's evolution (sorry, creationists), the ear itself was probably more muscled, and could be turned a little bit in different directions to allow us to hear better and warn us of impending attack by predators. Based solely on its shape, I'd think it would help to direct sound waves toward the center of the ear (ye olde eardrum), and could possibly be used to pick up vibrations and air pressure variations.

They also make great "how long has it been since she shaved the inside of her thighs" gauges...

What is the tip of the nose for?  We could function fine without it, yet it's made of the same thing earlobes are.  They're just there.

I imagine that the tip of the nose offers protection to our sinuses.  It is somewhat flexible to allow for movement, for sniffing and sneezing and such.

As for earlobes, I don't really have any guess.

I would think you could sniff and sneeze just the same without the tip of your nose.  Think about it...when you sniff, you move you're nostrils, not the tip of your nose....you could lose that and nothing would change.

Stroke is correct-

Our ears used to be able to swivel and direct sound better.  Those muscles still exist, but are so weak in modern humans now we can just wiggle them or our scalp just a little bit.

No, God created our earlobes that way because they turn him on.

We have ear lobes because women use them to steer our heads to exactly where they want us when we are "providing them with pleasure".
