Title: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: jtex316 on January 24, 2011, 10:51:05 am Note: I hate Palmer. I think he's an interception throwing machine who will break your heart each and every week with his ridiculous inconsistency.
However, he is 1,000x better than both of your current QBs combined, and a major upgrade for Miami, despite the fact that he's the aforementioned 3rd tier QB that I think he is. Palmer wants out of Cincinnati, quite possibly the best thought that has crossed his mind since becoming an NFL QB, because Cincinnati is a dump of a football team with a crappy organizational structure that hires nothing but miscreants and retread players. Hey Dolphins owner Steven Ross, hop on a plane to Cincy and offer Palmer something he can't refuse before he takes a job in Arizona or SF. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6051119 Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Dave Gray on January 24, 2011, 01:13:49 pm I don't know about that. He's under contract, so you'd have to trade for him. I think that might be a nightmare scenario.
Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: StL FinFan on January 24, 2011, 01:35:08 pm I'll pass. I'd rather they take their chances on a middle round draft pick.
Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: dolfan13 on January 24, 2011, 01:40:03 pm 26 tds with 20 ints... high on the interceptions, but he's a huge upgrade over what we currently have. if it costs a 4th rounder (say with an upgrade to a conditional 3rd based on performance), i think you have to jump on it.
you can still keep henne on the roster hoping for some miracle that transforms him into a capable starter, with palmer as the starter. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Dave Gray on January 24, 2011, 01:46:54 pm I think that a 4th rounder is even high. How many years does the guy have left? It's almost worse if he does well and costs you a 3rd for 1-2 seasons.
Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: StL FinFan on January 24, 2011, 01:48:34 pm He had TO and Ochocinco, he should have done a lot better, imo.

Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: MikeO on January 24, 2011, 07:54:07 pm Palmer can probably be had for a 4th round pick at this point in his career. At that asking price it would be dumb not to do it..
And trading for Palmer doesn't prevent you or stop you from drafting a QB. Even at #15! Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: CF DolFan on January 24, 2011, 08:42:05 pm Palmer can't be had. the owner said no way and that he thought the retirement talk was bogus. He had met with Carson and his agent prior to the agent releasing the statement.

I'd rather have a guy like Vince Young over Palmer. At least with Young, you can get some good years from him if he plays well. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: CF DolFan on January 25, 2011, 07:39:44 am I don't want Young but what worries me even more is I keep reading and hearing the same thing. I think he is going to be bad news for whoever he ends up with.
Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: dolfan13 on January 25, 2011, 09:24:44 am ur not really looking for a long term solution here.
right now you need to upgrade the qb position. palmer and young are both upgrades, and ireland needs to determine which would be the better route. you are still going to need another qb on the roster that you can develop into that future longer term starter. if they decide they can still develop something out of henne, the window they have for a "stopgap" is probably a year. if they decide they still need to draft a qb to develop, the window they have for a "stopgap" is probably 2-3 years. all in all, unless they are willing to give up a serious amount of high draft picks for a younger qb that can potentially be the guy, they are in the second tier market for short term solutions. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Pappy13 on January 25, 2011, 11:53:39 am If the Dolphins really want a QB in the draft, they should do like they have in the past and take 2 of them.
In 2008 the Dolphins took 2 defensive line players, Philip Merling and Kendall Langford. Langford has been the better player even though Merling was taken a round higher. In 2009 the Dolphins took 2 CB's Vontae Davis and Sean Smith and 2 WR's Patrick Turner and Brian Hartline. Davis has been the better corner although Smith has played pretty well at times too, but Hartline has been the better WR despite being taken a round later and Turner isn't even on the team anymore. In 2010 the Dolphins took 4 LB's but only Koa Misi and A.J. Edds made the roster. Misi has been better, but Edds has been hurt so it's a bit early to judge how that worked out. If they really want to upgrade at the QB position, I say take 2 QB's and double your chances that you'll find one decent one. There's room on the roster for 2 rookie QB's if they don't resign Thigpen and I really don't see a whole lot in the free agent market that I'm excited about. Course that does mean that Henne is probably your starter at least for game 1 next year, but are we looking for a stop gap or for the long haul? If we are in this for the long haul, they should take two rookie QB's and see which one pans out. Besides, does anyone really see us competing in the AFC East next year anyway? I doubt it. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Spider-Dan on January 25, 2011, 12:51:05 pm Miami took Henne in 08 and Pat White in 09. Is your argument that they drafted White a year late?

They went 2-1 in the last 3, with TO sitting all of them out, and Chad missing two our of the three. During those games, Carson averaged 261 passing yards, threw 5 TDs to only 2 picks, and made Jerome Simpson look like the best receiver he had all year. -EK Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: dolfan13 on January 25, 2011, 01:48:50 pm miami doesn't have a starting caliber nfl qb on the roster right now, why would you draft 2 qb's next year?
get a veteran qb who can upgrade the position for the next couple of years, and draft one you can develop. unless you think you can still develop henne, and in that case he would be the backup. orton would be the best target if the donkeys were dumb enough to let him go, but he would cost a pretty penny. a 4th for palmer would be a steal, but doesn't look like he is going anywhere. head case vince young would unfortunately still be a pretty good upgrade over what is currently on the roster at qb, but he wouldn't cost any draft picks. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Pappy13 on January 25, 2011, 01:49:40 pm Miami took Henne in 08 and Pat White in 09. Heck they probably need to draft 4 this year to have a reasonable shot that 1 of them will be decent.Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Diehard_Dolfan on January 25, 2011, 01:51:47 pm If they really want to upgrade at the QB position, I say take 2 QB's and double your chances that you'll find one decent one. I'm not a Carson Palmer fan but he did look good to almost great at times without T.O. and Ochocinco! I think that speaks volumes... Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: masterfins on January 25, 2011, 02:05:42 pm Palmer can't be had. the owner said no way and that he thought the retirement talk was bogus. He had met with Carson and his agent prior to the agent releasing the statement. I heard this on ESPN radio this morning also. Carson said he wanted to be traded, and the owner said he wasn't going to trade him. The owner has a history of keeping players whether they want to be there or not. Ocho wanted out also a couple years ago, and he's still there. Carson will be there another two years. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Pappy13 on January 25, 2011, 02:07:03 pm miami doesn't have a starting caliber nfl qb on the roster right now, why would you draft 2 qb's next year? Because I don't think that any of the "veterans" that are available are really going to help much and because I don't believe that Sparano and Ireland are capable of picking the one "right" QB in the draft. It's not enough to simply pick 1 in the first round and assume that he'll end up being the QB of the future. Pick 2 and double your chances that you get it right.Make Henne your #1 QB and just go with it for next year. He may not be any better than he was this year, but he probably won't be much worse either. The schedule is gonna be a bit easier next year, but you aren't gonna win the AFC East next year no matter who your QB is since both New England and Jets have more talent. Don't worry about that. Go 8-8 or something and continue to build for the future. Hopefully one of the 2 guys you pick in the draft or maybe even Henne pans out. The rest of the players on the team are young. Miami has zero aging veterans that are looking for 1 more chance unless you count Pennington. Don't waste next year too by taking a leap of faith on a veteran QB who's future isn't any more certain than Henne's. All you'll be doing then is guaranteeing that Henne rides the bench and offers nothing for the future and pinning all your future hopes on the 1 QB you took in the draft. 3 Chances are better than 1 even if you have all but given up on one of them and the other is a 4th round pick. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: MikeO on January 25, 2011, 06:55:46 pm can't draft 2 QB's though. Because you can only carry 3 on the roster. Figure Henne isn't going anywhere, figure we will get a vet backup/starter.
That leaves you with the Vet starting or as the backup to Henne. And the higher picked QB as your 3rd QB. The 2nd QB you draft would go to the practice squad, and if he any decent another team will grab him from under your nose. Hence a wasted draft pick most likely. We need to draft the RIGHT QB. And if you feel someone is in the draft is a special QB that you can realisticly get, then trade the picks, mortage the future, do what it takes to get him. Not saying trade up to #1 or #2 and get a guy. But if it means going from 15 to 12 or 15 to 10.....do it!! You can't win without a QB in this league. Period. If you feel that strongly about one, then get him and worry about the other stuff later on. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Pappy13 on January 26, 2011, 11:44:26 am can't draft 2 QB's though. Because you can only carry 3 on the roster. Not true, you can carry as many as you want, you can only have 3 active on game day. That leaves you with the Vet starting or as the backup to Henne. And the higher picked QB as your 3rd QB. The 2nd QB you draft would go to the practice squad, and if he any decent another team will grab him from under your nose. Hence a wasted draft pick most likely. What precludes the team from having Henne starting and 2 rookies backing him up? Even if you did bring in a vet, if you didn't want to risk your 2nd rookie QB on the practice squad, you can still keep him on the roster and just make him inactive each week. It may not be wise to do that, but it CAN be done and that's only if you feel you have to bring in a veteran which I don't.We need to draft the RIGHT QB. And if you feel someone is in the draft is a special QB that you can realisticly get, then trade the picks, mortage the future, do what it takes to get him. Not saying trade up to #1 or #2 and get a guy. But if it means going from 15 to 12 or 15 to 10.....do it!! I'm not saying don't do that, I'm saying do that AND pick another QB in the 4th or 5th round and see if you get lucky. If you REALLY think that QB is the WHOLE problem then what's the harm in getting 2? All you are doing is wasting 1 pick that really doesn't matter because you are already convinced that QB is the whole problem and you are doubling your chances that you will find the future of the franchise in the draft. The reward is worth the risk, again IF you believe that QB is the whole problem. Personally, I don't believe that, but IF you do then pick 2.You can't win without a QB in this league. Period. If you feel that strongly about one, then get him and worry about the other stuff later on. That's EXACTLY what I'm saying. If you feel that strongly then don't settle for getting 1 when you can get 2.Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: MikeO on January 26, 2011, 05:51:39 pm That's EXACTLY what I'm saying. If you feel that strongly then don't settle for getting 1 when you can get 2. Well, first off then you have to PAY two QB's. And QB's are the most expensive position in the league. And second, whats the odds of finding two good ones when most teams can't find one Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: Pappy13 on January 26, 2011, 06:27:51 pm Well, first off then you have to PAY two QB's. And QB's are the most expensive position in the league. And second, whats the odds of finding two good ones when most teams can't find one One of them is gonna be like a 4th or 5th rounder. You're gonna pay him a lot less than you would a veteran QB.You're not looking for 2 good ones, you're looking for 1 great one. The 4th or 5th rounder is a shot in the dark, if it doesn't work out you cut him and no harm done. If he develops into something with potential even if you don't end up keeping him you might end up getting a draft choice back or something for him. People are always looking for QB's with potentional as their 3rd QB. I keep hearing people say that Miami needs to go all in to get a QB, but no one knows which one that should be. There's 4 or 5 being mentioned for the top round or so, but none of them are sure bets. So instead of going all in to get 1 QB, maybe it's better to hedge your bets and try to get one of those 4 or 5 in the first round and then pick another one in the later rounds and hope you strike gold with one of them. It's happened before, I think it's worth a shot if you desperately need a franchise QB. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: MikeO on January 26, 2011, 09:35:30 pm RUMOR ALERT....
Omar Kelly is reporting from people he talked to don't buy a word Ireland is saying, the Fins know they have to add a legit QB this offseason and are leaning towards trading for one. And they feel Kolb is the best fit for them Omar also said expect the Vikings to get Vince Young since Leslie Frazier signed Young's QB coach from Tenn and has him on his staff now. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: fyo on January 27, 2011, 07:32:46 pm Going into the season with a question mark at quarterback and two rookies backing him up would be insane. The whole season would be down the drain if your quarterback got injured.
This year especially so, with the risk of a drastically shortened off season to work with the rookies and teach them the system. Incumbents have never been so favored as this season. The Dolphins need to either bring Pennington back for one more year or, if they have no confidence in his health (and why should they), bring in a veteran who fits well from the onset. Title: Re: Hot Lead for the Dolphins for the QB Position: Carson Palmer Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on January 28, 2011, 12:14:25 pm Palmer would be an upgrade over anything we have now. I would take Palmer over Kolb, Young, Leinart or most of the bums listed as FA QB's this year.

I would take Palmer over Kolb, Young, Leinart or most of the bums listed as FA QB's this year. Not over Kolb or Young. I am intrigued by Young. Having a QB who can make plays with his feet would be something new. And his past is his past, but we have seen a lot of guys turn their lives around in this league by going to a new situation. And Young is the easiest one to get, no draft picks, cheap. So if he fails, you lose nothing. Low risk-High reward type. |
