Title: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: bsfins on January 24, 2011, 02:38:42 pm A nod to Andrew "Mc lovin" Perloff from SI.com,and the Dan Patrick show....
At the staff meeting this morning, I was listening to to everyone chit chat,in my usual holding up the corner spot in the conference room...And realized how much shit, doesn't mean jack didly squat to me.... So,my question is....What things do you not do,that may be popular...Maybe even thought of as normal? Mine include.... Facebook - Waste of time, too much B.S. Twitter - About the same.... The Mall - 98% of the stores,I've either never been to,or don't care...A sports shop, and to a much lesser extent Sears...(even they've sucked for years) I understand if you're 15,I'm 35 and the mall could burn down,I'd probably not notice except everyone bitching about it Going to the Movies - I have a nice HD Flat screen T.V.,pretty good surround sound, and a comfy couch.... Going to Concerts - Most artists sound better digitally anyway..and I don't have to deal with the other people.... Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Dave Gray on January 24, 2011, 02:43:20 pm I don't listen to the radio.
I don't watch any "event" television that I can think of. (Lost, for example.) I don't have any interest in late night shows (Conan, Letterman, Kimmel, etc.) I don't go to concerts, unless it's a very specific band or a small, small venue. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: bsfins on January 24, 2011, 02:51:21 pm I started to put this, and seeing Dave's "Event" one...I'll add it...
I Don't watch "Fox" - The exceptions are When they televise baseball/and football games..The last series I watched by Fox was Boston Public ESPN - pretty much the same way,but I like PTI Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: StL FinFan on January 24, 2011, 02:54:09 pm I don't listen to the radio much.
I don't watch talk shows. I don't watch any sit com on a regular basis. I don't watch reality shows, except for American Idol. I would quit it too, but my kids like it. I go to the movie theater very rarely. I don't have my kids signed up for more than one after school activity at a time. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Dave Gray on January 24, 2011, 02:54:56 pm I like to drink alcohol and I like to do fun, outdoors stuff, but I don't like them together.
So, I don't like to drink beer on the beach, or while kayaking or playing volleyball. I don't really enjoy that part of BBQs, which is really popular among one of my friend groups. They love to get together and drink while they play kickball and grill out. I'll rather do one, then the other. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Pappy13 on January 24, 2011, 03:28:40 pm I don't read books. It just takes me too damn long to finish them because I never seem to find the time. I have read a few books over the years and I always enjoy them when I do read them, but it's few and far between. I'd rather watch the movie when it comes out which if it's any good seems like it always does these days.
Besides my wife loves to read and if a movie is based on a book, I guarantee you that she's read it before we go to see it and 9 times out of 10 she doesn't like the movie because it wasn't as good as the book, so apparently reading the book ruins the movie. LOL Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: bsfins on January 24, 2011, 04:53:28 pm I don't smoke,or drink, and Trying to give up Red meat...but I think those are more of personal choices....
Texting - I really don't get texting much,Yeah I get about 5 Avg (about 10 on a really busy week) text messages.Usually they're from work "Staff meeting moved to 2pm",If a Friend texts me I'll answer, but I really don't do it... Chasing Women - I'm not going to dating sites,I'm not trying to check out women, chasing women..Too much hassle, too much drama, and not worth the expense.. ***Hijack*** This is a bad problem here with a lot of women under 30,I'm out somewhere, and they think I actually give a shit about them...99% of the time they are in my way, between where I'm going,or something on the shelf...and they give me the dirty look...***end hijack*** Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: fyo on January 24, 2011, 05:09:24 pm I don't use AOL 2.0 (aka Facebook).
I don't use ICQ v. 3.0 (aka Twitter). I don't watch talk shows or listen to talk radio. I don't watch reality TV, with the exception of "cooking stuff" -- and only when it has some actual cooking in it (so no Hell's Kitchen, for example). Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: StL FinFan on January 24, 2011, 05:54:37 pm Oh yeah, I hardly ever use my cell phone. I don't text ever and my cell phone does not have internet access.
Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Brian Fein on January 24, 2011, 07:28:16 pm I don't have a home phone.
I don't watch commercials. I don't listen to terrestrial radio. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: TonyB0D on January 24, 2011, 09:07:50 pm don't watch TV
am an atheist Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Frimp on January 24, 2011, 10:55:04 pm No cell phone
I hate reality shows I don't watch ESPN unless there is a football game on (I get my news online) I couldn't tell you what an of the most popular songs on the radio are Haven't been to a concert since 2005 except for one local band where I know the drummer, and that was only once Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Dave Gray on January 24, 2011, 11:44:58 pm Yeah, I'm an outspoken atheist. ...not only that, but I've been one for about 15 years. (outspoken, at least) It's more popular now, but it was pretty taboo for a lot of my life.
I also rarely order french fries, because I prefer vegetables -- and not even really for health reasons. I wouldn't normally think that's all that weird, but people have reacted strangely about it before. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Brian Fein on January 25, 2011, 12:16:35 am french fries suck. I haven't had french fries in years.
My next one... I haven't been to McDonald's since 2007 Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Thundergod on January 25, 2011, 12:22:42 am Can't stand reality T.V.
I'm not obsessed with music like damn near the entire planet. Don't watch talk shows British humor sucks Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: bsfins on January 25, 2011, 12:30:28 am After seeing Brian's post about Mcdonalds.....I've never been to a Starbucks....
Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Frimp on January 25, 2011, 12:40:36 am ^^^
Neither have I Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Pappy13 on January 25, 2011, 09:55:56 am After seeing Brian's post about Mcdonalds.....I've never been to a Starbucks.... I'll go you one better than that. I don't drink coffee. I think I've had like 1 cup my whole life. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Frimp on January 25, 2011, 10:21:05 am ^^^
I like coffee, but I can't drink it. For some reason, if I drink a cup of coffee, 30 minutes later, I'm starving regardless of how much I've had to eat Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: bsfins on January 25, 2011, 12:12:33 pm I drank Coffee my senior year in high school, quit for many years and picked it back up a few years ago.I had given up all soda, and was drinking like crystal light, and Iced tea. Drinking a glass of tea in the morning, wouldn't get me going. Also I ran into, when I was away from home,it seemed like it was had to get a iced tea till close to lunch time.I hated drinking the crap they call tea out of a bottle, because there is so much other crap in it....
Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: StL FinFan on January 25, 2011, 01:06:32 pm After seeing Brian's post about Mcdonalds.....I've never been to a Starbucks.... Me either. I don't drink coffee, or anything else with caffeine. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on January 25, 2011, 02:09:39 pm Put me on the no Coffee train. I have had 1 cup my entire life and I can not see any reason on this planet outside of a bet that would change that. Along those same lines I have never stepped foot in a Starbucks even to buy coffee for someone else.
I do not own an Ipod or MP3 player of any sort. I have no use for one. I love music and I listen to XM in the office, the vehicles, the house and it is available on my cell phones if I need it as is Pandora. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Brian Fein on January 27, 2011, 11:12:41 am Apparently I learned yesterday that I am weird because I don't wear any flip-flops or sandals. I don't even own a pair. All of my shoes are lace-up and tie sneakers or other shoes. I refuse to wear anything else.

I don't even own a pair. All of my shoes are lace-up and tie sneakers or other shoes. I refuse to wear anything else. I was with you on this up till last year when I took a cruise with my wife and she insisted I get a pair of sandals to wear. They have so many different styles now and some of them are closer to a pair of shoes than sandals really. I didn't mind wearing them at all on the cruise and I've even worn them a few times since.Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Count me in that club...I have big feet, and have enough jokes about wearing water skis,or putting out forest fires....I don't own any sandal/flip flop...not since I was like 5,Then I didn't have a lot of say.... Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Dave Gray on January 27, 2011, 06:51:49 pm I wear flip-flops all the time. When that came in style, I was very happy.
Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: fyo on January 27, 2011, 07:53:07 pm My feet start to hurt like hell if I wear flip-flops or anything else where the sole of the shoe isn't "fixed" along the length of my foot. I can wear sandals as long as they have something to grab the heel. If the sole of the shoe is just flapping, I tense my big toe and get one hell of a pain along the bottom of my feet to the point where I can literally no longer walk.

Post by: Brian Fein on January 28, 2011, 01:24:57 am Awesome! The "Flip Flops Suck Posse" is in full effect!
Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: StL FinFan on January 28, 2011, 12:30:16 pm I don't wear flip flops either. Even if I did not have to wear supportive inserts in my shoes, they are just not comfortable.
I don't wear makeup on a daily basis. I'm not into designer clothing. I'm not into having a million pairs of shoes. I have one purse I use regularly and 2-3 more for more formal occasions. I usually have no product in my hair. The only jewelry I wear regularly is my wedding ring. I don't like to dress up. I hate wearing heels. I don't watch chick TV or movies, either. Oh yeah, and I love sports. Title: Re: What do you do that goes against the grain? Post by: Dave Gray on January 28, 2011, 03:59:09 pm I know something. I watch political news -- 5 times a week. I'm not talking the Daily Show either; I'm talking two pundits arguing at a desk. I don't know anyone else my age that does this. My wife hates it. I understand why...no conversations ever go anywhere.
