Title: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: bsfins on January 25, 2011, 12:02:19 pm I noticed in the other thread, quite a few people said they hate reality shows....Is that all reality shows?
I admit, I've gone to the hatred of all the celebrity reality shows...I used to watch some Ozzie, then a few episode of Gene Simmons....They burn out quick... I liked the first few seasons of Survivor...Then it seemed like everyone walked in with their head shots,It got boring..Big Brother was the same way....I've never watched American Idol,or the dance shows (no Dancing with the Stars)....I don't watch Game show/talent show reality either.... *** Hijack** I watched Americas got talent one episode, a local band was on,which was a crock because they've had a show down in Branson for many years ** end hijack*** To me there is another group that I hate is the Snapped,Dateline Mysteries,48 hours investigates,I almost got away with it type shows....They go through step,by step through a crime, and talk to different people involved.....(these are too much like my job...) I do like shows like Pawn Stars,American Pickers,Ice road truckers,Ghost hunters,Destination Truth,Fact or Faked paranormal files,Mysteries at the museum, and History Detectives...I admit, some of those shows have spun off others, and Clones...I don't watch ... So I'm curious why alot of you hate it? Do you watch any reality T.V.? Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: SportsChick on January 25, 2011, 12:05:57 pm I watch a lot of reality TV. Most of it is competition type stuff (Hell's Kitchen, So You Think You Can Dance, Live to Dance, Real World/Road Rules Challenge) but I also like Pawn Stars and stuff like that.....
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Pappy13 on January 25, 2011, 12:39:32 pm The only reality TV show I will watch is Survivor. I feel like it's the most "real". These people have to endure a lot. If you don't believe me, just ask Jimmy Johnson who participated in the last one. The first night he got sick and didn't last long and he maintains it's one of the hardest things he's ever done. They had 2 people quit on the last one because they just got tired of no sleep, rain, cold, little food, ETC. Remember these people were giving up on the chance for a million dollars, so they didn't take the decision lightly. The "rewards" often come down to something as simple as a hot shower, a warm bed, pizza and soda and the people often look like they've just been given a new car. It truely is a big achievement to just last 30 days let along win the money.
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Sunstroke on January 25, 2011, 12:39:56 pm I absolutely cannot stand reality TV. I can't do the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the reality world...and can't do the Survivor/Great Race/unreal reality shows either. Live sports...now THAT is my kind of reality TV! Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Frimp on January 25, 2011, 12:56:23 pm I absolutely cannot stand reality TV. I can't do the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the reality world...and can't do the Survivor/Great Race/unreal reality shows either. Live sports...now THAT is my kind of reality TV! This. What I can't believe is how relevant these people on the show think they are. My wife watches that Teen Mom crap, and one of the idiots on it is in Chattanooga. There have been numerous reports from people who know her who say that she has become the most stuck up bitch since filming that stupid show. She got knocked up at 16, and now she thinks she is above everyone. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: StL FinFan on January 25, 2011, 01:04:07 pm This. On a side note, all the crime shows B said he does not like; I love them. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: BoSoxGrl on January 25, 2011, 01:16:39 pm I watch a shitload of reality television.
My reasoning is simple...I have a very stressful job and I have to problem solve all day. When i come home some days I simply want to not think...what better way then to put on Jersey Shore and zone out? It is an hour of my week where no one is screaming at me, telling me my policies are outrageous, etc. Side note: I also watch a lot of reality television because it makes me feel really smart and content with my little, average life. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Sunstroke on January 25, 2011, 01:24:14 pm I don't do the "cop and doctor" shows either... I've never seen any of the ones that Lil_B listed. The only one that falls in this general area is "Bones," but only if I am totally bored and there aren't any games on. My TV tastes are really pretty simple: Live sports and sports news eats up 75% of my TV viewing. The other 25% is movies, sci-fi or horror shows (Dr Who, Walking Dead, etc...) and animated comedies (Futurama, South Park, Robot Chicken, ATHF) Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: bsfins on January 25, 2011, 01:30:06 pm I've found as I've gotten older,I've began to hate sitcoms/dramas,and drawn to more of the informative type reality shows.I'd even throw a show like Mythbusters in that category.(another show I left off that list....) Sitcoms, and Dramas can't stay different, funny,to my liking long enough for me to watch more than a season or so...Most of the shows I watch tend to be different each week, but in the same format....
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Dave Gray on January 25, 2011, 02:12:27 pm I was some reality TV.
I can watch the competitive kind, if I feel they're legit, like they're actually competing for something meaningful, like Top Chef or The Ultimate Fighter. But I can't watch the ones that are competing for something I find to be meaningless (like a game) -- Big Brother, The Apprentice, The Bachelor, etc. Hell's Kitchen tows a line between the two. I get frustrated with how fake it is, but I like the premise and wish they'd take it more seriously. I can also watch ones where all of the contestants are idiots and they're essentially being mocked -- Jersey Shore, Tool Academy. They have no redeeming value, but I laugh at them because the people are usually good for one hilarious statement per episode. As for Pawn Stars and American Pickers, I don't even REALLY consider them reality shows. But if they are, I can watch these as well and enjoy them fully. They come off more as documentaries to me, though. At least what I take away from them is. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: masterfins on January 25, 2011, 02:41:11 pm Some I like : American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Top Chef, Amazing Race (sometimes), Survivor (25% of the time), Hell's Kitchen.
Others are a waste of space: American Idol, Dancing with the stars, Bachelor, Millionaire matchmaker, any "Real" Housewives, etc. I also thought American Scrappers was funny, they stopped after five episodes though. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on January 25, 2011, 02:48:46 pm My wife watches anything reality on TV. I will watch a few shows with her like Big Brother or the Amazing Race with a little American Idol or Celebrity Apprentice mixed in. However she watches all the Jersey Shore, I love Money, & Tool Academy shit that drives me up the wall. I will not spend 10 seconds on this crap. I like the Deadliest Catch and Pawn Stars or Mythbusters type shows as well but I do not really consider them much of a reality show as they aren't really competing for anything just documenting their everyday careers.
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on January 25, 2011, 03:43:44 pm I watch two types of reality shows:
Football games. The evening news. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Frimp on January 25, 2011, 03:46:42 pm I don't consider Mythbusters a reality show. Its more informative entertainment.
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Dave Gray on January 25, 2011, 04:04:09 pm One show that bothers me: Extreme Home Makeover.
On one hand, these people definitely get hooked up with a nice house, however, it doesn't seem genuine to me. It's like sponsored charity that exists to pimp a bunch of products, not to really help people. It's like they're exploiting the destitute with a big pity party. ...on top of that, to make the show entertaining, the make these crazy, impractical houses. But they are doing something nice for them....I don't know. When the cameras turn off, none of those people involved are helping. It's their job. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Brian Fein on January 26, 2011, 09:30:55 am I watch some reality TV. I have never watched Survivor or Big Brother. They seem stupid and full of lame backstabbing and drama.
I like Biggest Loser, Hell's Kitchen, etc. I CAN'T STAND Jersey Shore. Hate it! I feel that making these buffoons into A-list celebrities just for acting like buffoons is glorifying buffoonery. That bugs me. Plenty of other people are more worthy and deserving of the big pay-day, because they've done well with their lives, but the recognition goes to jack-ass d-bags who waste their days "GTL"ing ::) LAME. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: SportsChick on January 26, 2011, 09:31:31 am and now we're subjected to that t-shirt time crap at Panthers games
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: fyo on January 26, 2011, 10:47:39 am Hell's Kitchen tows a line between the two. I get frustrated with how fake it is, but I like the premise and wish they'd take it more seriously. Gordon Ramsey has the "more serious" version as well, it's called Master Chef (originally a British concept). First season was last year (and was very good, IMHO) and it's been renewed. I'm not sure I really consider a show like Master Chef "reality TV"... I guess there's a huge grey area, but without the personal drama, voting each other out, backstabbing etc., it has more in common with a game show than Big Brother or Survivor. Mythbusters is no where near "reality TV" in my book. Deadliest Catch is slightly closer, but still far from what I consider to be "reality TV". Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Pappy13 on January 26, 2011, 10:58:03 am I have never watched Survivor or Big Brother. They seem stupid and full of lame backstabbing and drama. Try Survivor, I think you might be a bit surprised. Sure there's backstabbing that goes on, but there's also a lot of real competition and just plain downright surviving the elements. They are not provided food to eat except for a small portion of rice they have to cook themselves. Any additional food they have to hunt, fish or gather themselves. They are also not provided water to drink, they are told where they can get fresh water but it's up to the players to get the water and since there's not much in the way of containers to hold the water normally they set up a rotation of when it's each person's turn to go get some water each day. They aren't provided matches to make fire the first day, they can either start a fire on their own someway or if they don't have fire after a couple days they are given something to start a fire, but then they must keep it going. If the fire goes out they are screwed, so keeping the fire going becomes a big deal. The competition normally lasts about a month, so by the end those there have usually lost a lot of weight and don't look much like they did when they got there. Most of the locations are tropical or jungle in some form or fashion. It rains a lot and goes from hot in the day to cold at night. They have to build their own place to live and usually it's nothing more than a few sticks tied together with something covering it. There's not much in the way of blankets and stuff, so they don't often get much sleep. Camps are normally set up near some kind of large body of water so at least they can bathe, but there's no soap or anything like that so they all look pretty rough just a couple days in. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination. The people who do the best are the ones that are able to make the best of the situation forming alliances with others and just outlasting those that get tired or sick and almost force the others to get rid of them. I like the show a lot. I always try to pick who I think will do well the first couple of episodes and people will sometimes surprise you. People that you think don't have a chance will sometimes last way further than you expect and some you feel should do good end up being gone quickly. I really enjoyed this last season with Jimmy Johnson. No one knew who he was at first, about a day or 2 in someone thought they recognized him and he said that it was him. Some of the people didn't believe him and just thought it was someone that looked like him. He is actually the oldest person to ever be on the show, he's 67. He got sick the first night, I think he tried to overdo it a bit, but hung in well and after the first couple of days they started to fear him and got rid of him on day 8. He tried to explain that no one was going to give him a million dollars, but it didn't matter, they didn't want him around. All of the participants must pass a physical to be on the show and Jimmy didn't pass the first time he tried. He had to lower his cholesterol and lose weight to be on the show. He credits the show with probably saving his life since he had to get in better shape to be on it. If you haven't seen it, I recommend you watch it at least once. I'm not a reality person, but I enjoy it. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Sunstroke on January 26, 2011, 11:13:31 am I CAN'T STAND Jersey Shore. Hate it! I just stood up at my desk and gave you a standing-O... Bravo!! "Glorifying buffoonery"...man, I sure wish I'd coined that phrase. ;D Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: bsfins on January 26, 2011, 11:54:25 am Other Shows, that I watch, that might be thought of possibly in the Genre...Top Gear (BBC version),Dragons Den,was very interesting to me, I liked Storm Chasers a lot because they seemed like they were in my back yard alot.... :D (I was getting on a roll, and almost listed Graham Norton :D )
Again I watched the first few seasons of survivor....and it kept getting worse....Australia (the last full season I watched),skipped Africa (first 5 minutes of the first show),and the one with Rupert/Rudy (5 minutes of the first show)....Watched part of all Stars (a few episodes)...Still hated it... I also thought Top shot stunk....I thought the idea was pretty cool, but the show felt too reality showy.... Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: JVides on January 26, 2011, 01:23:36 pm I only watch the Amazing Race and Top Chef. I love to travel, so that lets me pretend I'm doing just that. I also love cooking / eating, hence Top Chef.
My wife, however...Survivor, Amazing Race, Top Chef, Project Runway, Real Housewives of X,Y, and Z (she doesn't watch Atlanta), Jersey Shore (lately), The Bachelor/ette, Dancing With the Stars...God, what else...16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, My Life on the D-List. She was all about Jon & Kate Plus 8 and Gene Simmons' Family Jewels. She also watched the Girls Next Door (only worth it for me on DVD because the nudity blur edits were not there on the DVDs, but even then, not worth it). I even caught her watching those worthless Denise Richards and Tori Spelling shows. Basically, she watches nothing but reality TV, so we now for the most part don't watch TV together. It's another thing I just don't get. Why care about these idiots? Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Brian Fein on January 26, 2011, 01:28:32 pm I forgot about Amazing Race!! This is my favorite show on TV. Honestly. LOVE This show!
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on January 26, 2011, 06:01:34 pm I also thought Top shot stunk....I thought the idea was pretty cool, but the show felt too reality showy.... I liked this show just because of all the intersting and different weapons they were required to use in the different events. I am actually looking forward to the 2nd season which starts up in two weeks. Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: bsfins on January 26, 2011, 11:27:19 pm Face off on SyFy was pretty interesting, It's premiere episode was tonight, and on again in a half an hour. It's make up special effects artist competition...A couple of the designs were really pretty cool...It has a feeling alot like the cake baking competition....
Title: Re: Reality shows....are they all evil? Post by: Dave Gray on January 27, 2011, 02:12:07 am I hear a lot of love for Amazing Race. I've never liked it. It plays like the same "game show" garbage as the others.
