I think that this may hurt them in the now (be good for the franchise, tickets, etc), but they won't have the balance to compete this season.

I think that Gallinari is a sizable loss, actually.

In the coming years, though, especially if they can sign a 3rd (Chris Paul, for example) that they will be real contenders.

That said, I wouldn't want to run into them in the early rounds of the playoffs.

Confusing move.

This won't make them title worthy this year.  They will be hard to defend, yes.  They played zero defense before Mello arrived.  It will be less than zero now.  A strong defensive team like Boston or Miami will be able to punch them in the mouth.

The NBA has already warned up an upcoming hard cap and a reduction in cap room.  Between Stod and Mello they take up 20% of the current cap...EACH.  Almost half of your cap on two guys. 

Look, in this day and age you can't get a superstar in his prime like this.  You kind of have to make the deal, I guess.  But I don't see where this has brought the Knicks closer to a title this year...or next.

The Knicks now have the #2 and #3 players on the point list this season for scoring based on one-on-one isolation plays. I don't foresee a lot of ball movement in their offense.

The problem with this trade, is that they no longer have any assets to make more trades. Rumor has it they wanted to reacquire Camby, who would fit perfectly into their system. Unfortunately, they can't offer Portland anything.

Billups has a $14 mill expiring contract next year. That is there trade asset. Plus Landry Fields is a big trade chip.

That isn't the goal!!! They are rebuilding. They have been in NBA HELL for 10 years. You don't turn it around overnight. They were a team that was 2 games above .500 at the all star break with one real player on its roster and a bunch of scrubs. Now they have 2 legit stars and Billups. It's a reubilding process, the Knicks aren't trying to win a Championship this year or next. Hell at the press conference the Owner said as much and the Walsh has been all over the radio saying the same.

They have Amare and Melo. The rookie of the year in Fields (Blake isn't a rookie but might get the award on a technacilty) and a vet PG who is a proven winner in Billups. Add their 1st round pick next year....that's how you rebuild! They are 2 years away and everyone knows it.

^^^ I love Landry Fields...or more accurately, most of my fantasy squads have appreciated his performance, but if Blake Griffin wasn't eligible, Landry would still finish behind John Wall in the RoY this year.

This is one of those years where there are numerous worthy Rookies, but they won't win ROTY because of super talents. Hey, Melo, Wade and Lebron all started the same year too. Fields isn't a trade chip, he is a core player. I am happy they kept him over Gallo.

Also MikeO, Billups' contract expires next year, so then it is an asset, this year he is just our PG. He is still a very good player and I am happy he is on board, but I don't think the team sees him as the future and nor should they. Chris Paul or the new Nets PG Deron Williams probably fills that role.

Yeah, next years trading deadline Billups contract is an asset. That's what said. Even in the offseason it is really, guy in the final year of his deal with $14 mill coming off the books.

Also one Knicks beat reporter on one of the 10,000 radio shows who covered this story nation wide said the Knicks have no chance to re-sign Fields if they want to add Paul or Williams. Won't be possible. Fields is playing himself into a huge deal

Has the NBA fall that hard.  Dont get me wrong, Im a DIE HARD HEAT fan since 88,  bit whats up with the *STARS* not wanting to carry a franchise anymore.  Hell every super star in the NBA no wants to play with this player.   With this late trend of owners coming together to form TRIOS.  BOSTON, MIAMI, LAL, NY,  Who's that start player for a team.. 

I love D-Wade but I did not like what he said about a player dont want that much pressure to carry a franchise.  Back in the the day things were different.  You dont *cough* you didn't see Bird, Jordan, Magic, Isiah,  crying about being the Man in the Spotlight even though the guys had great talent around them.

baqck in the day bird had mchale and parish, jordan had pippen and rodman, magic had kareem, DJ Isiah had dumars, rodman .. none of those players had mo williams as their #2 or Michael Beasley .. or whoever was up in canada for bosh .. a polar bear maybe ?

Please don't use Chris Bosh in any comparison when talking about Bird, MJ, Magic, Isiah or even Lebron or Wade. Bosh is a nice player. NOT a franchsie player. Not even a #2 level guy in the opinions of many. The guy did nothing in Toronto and has done NOTHING in his career to earn that level of respect. NOTHING! He is a nice player don't get me wrong, but he is nothing special by any means.

bosh is a 6? time all star and has a career average of 20/10  .. that's in the mchale neighborhood

The Heat basically changed the landscape over the summer, so this is how it will be played forward for the foreseeable future. Cap space and a nice location will determine the contenders. Then again, not like the league wasn't a dynasty league to begin with. I think 11 franchises have won the last 30 titles.

Comparing Bosh to McHale is laughable on every level.
