At&t announced around mid march they're going to cap broadband services...If you have their broadband High speed..It's 150 GBs per month,if you have Uverse,it's 250 gb per month...If you go over 3 times then they start slapping you with $10 more per month,for each time you go over ($10 per every 50GB's over the cap) This starting in May 2011

Oddly enough the day that I heard about it,I bought a new desk,and unplugged my router,so I lost all my bandwidth logs...Since then, I've averaged about 8 GB's per week,the only big change, is Video tutorials on how to do stuff,if at all possible I download them and save them.Rather than watch them online,where I might watch them 3-4 times.I also realize, that I've not watched very many movies through Netflix lately,so that weekly number may go up dramatically. ??? I've not done alot of big major program updates,I haven't played hardly any games on Steam in awhile.All the games I've gotten were deals of the day,downloads,were in February. :-\

I don't know if I buy the reasoning (one of which was Piracy),I have to admit telling me,knowing that I have a cap...Bothers me,makes me feel less free on the internet...A little like my window to the world,just got bars on it.... :D

Do you have a bandwidth cap on your internet? If so have you ever broken the cap?
How much do you use on an average month?

I don't THINK I have a cap, but with the amount of XBOX live I use it would make me mad.  The day I heard about that, I was grateful that I don't have AT&T.  I feel like, if I did, this would cause me to change providers ASAP.

I only have the options of Mediacom,or AT&T (non dial up service)...Most people I know hate them both :D They've gone back and forth between the two.

Um, Comcast has had a 250GB cap for years.

I use AT&T. I guess I have a cap, but I must not be hitting it or anything. (My bill has been the same every month.)

I am pretty sure I do not have one either for the same reasons. I spend some much time with my PS3 online that if there were one I would have gone over it and known by now. I am going to look into it for shits and giggles though.

Not only does comcast have 250 gigs per month, but you do not have the option to pay more if you go over.  They reserve the right to immediately terminate the account for violation of their "unacceptable use" policy.

I think many of you would be surprised to see your usage isn't as much as you think, especially for gaming. I had a friend once that changed his internet provider and went from like a 1 gig download speed to a 10 gig download speed and expected to see a huge improvement in his gaming.  After the switch he said he couldn't even tell the difference. I explained to him that gaming really doesn't use a ton of bandwidth, what's more important is the network lag. Most of the real work is done on the client side or the server side, there's really not a lot of data passed between the 2.

Video streaming or downloading on the other hand is a different issue, that does require more bandwidth. That's really where you eat up the gigabytes of data.

To those worried about XBox and PS3s...

Online gaming uses very little bandwidth, all things considered. If you played heavy WoW 24 hours a day, every day, for a whole month, you'd be hard pressed to use up more than 15GB total. More realistic play is closer to half that, and that's still 24/7.

Fast-paced FPS-games can use quite a bit more, but even a hog like Battlefield 2 uses less than 100MB per hour, which equates to around 75GB a month for 24/7 usage.

What's going to kill your cap is anything video content. Netflix in HD can consume several GB an hour!

Yeah, online gaming is usually less raw bandwidth than browsing the web.  However, with Netflix and other streaming services, you can easily hit the cap.

Buddhagirl, AT&T has not had a cap; that's the thrust of this article.

Ahhhh....so i might be screwed when they do. I watch streaming movies on Netflix every night.
