Title: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: bsfins on April 05, 2011, 12:02:37 am I'm sick of being COLD damn it...Sunday it was in the mid 80's, today it was in the 50's,low of 28 tonight...I wanna be somewhere warm....
So it got me thinking... Where are your dream vacations? ...Places you've always wanted to visit,Say top 5... What was the best vacation you've ever taken? Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Brian Fein on April 05, 2011, 12:09:40 am Its going to be in the 80's tomorrow - come on down!
I'm going on my dream vacation in just over a month. Although, my "dream" vacation would really be about 2 months long, I am really looking forward to spending 2 weeks in Europe. I've never been there, and there's so much history and so much to see. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm curious to see the board's consensus opinion on cruises. I find that public opinion is very polar - you either love it or hate it. I am in the "love it" camp... Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Thundergod on April 05, 2011, 12:47:53 am ^^^ Add one more to the "love it" camp. Been to Europe, traveled a few states, but the cruise just captivated me. Loved it ever since my first cruise, best vacationing you can ever do.
I'd love to go to Hawaii (yeah yeah), and Las Vegas. It'll happen damnit. It'll happen. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Lee on April 05, 2011, 12:50:21 am Best vacation for me was a 7 day caribbean cruise that included, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands. To answer Brian's question: I like cruises because its the one vacation where I won't take my phone and I tell everyone not to even try contacting me for 7 days. For me, it is very liberating and relaxing to know that no one will ever call me.
Other memorable vacations for me: Washington, D.C. in the fall New York in the Spring Chicago during St. Patrick's Day (green river for the win) Unfortunately, I haven't had a vacation in almost 2 years now, but I do have Vegas planned for the summer to enter the WSOP. P.S. I'm very envious of your trip to Europe, Brian. Its definately in my bucket list. :-) Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: fyo on April 05, 2011, 08:34:48 am I've traveled all over on vacation. The 48 contiguous states, most of Western Europe, some nice islands here and there.
My dream vacation would be some of the stuff/places I haven't seen yet: Africa, Asia, South America, Alaska, Hawaii. The best vacations I've been on have been ones with great nature. For some reason, big buildings and stuff like that really doesn't do it for me. I really like seeing old / ancient buildings, but it doesn't beat spectacular nature. Skiing, hiking in the mountains, trips to the West (CO, UT, AZ, NM, mainly). Exotic islands isn't my thing, unless I get to go explore the nature. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Buddhagirl on April 05, 2011, 08:56:04 am My dream vacation is China where I can hang out at the Wolong Panda Center. So far my favorite vacation was the Lares Trek in Peru. I roughed it for a week or so. No showers, iphones, etc. It was awesome. Until I fell in poop.
This year, I'm going to Paris, Belgium, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam and a couple of other places. I'm still nailing down the intinerary. I'm in the anti-cruise camp since I like to do more adventure type stuff. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: fyo on April 05, 2011, 09:12:15 am It was awesome. Until I fell in poop. I have nothing to add... ;) Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Buddhagirl on April 05, 2011, 09:33:02 am I have nothing to add... ;) There was crying and a full on meltdown. I was pretty much facedown in llama poop and it was still the best vacation ever. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Phishfan on April 05, 2011, 09:53:42 am The vacations I remember the most are the ones I had as a child visiting historical areas. I want to visit all 50 states before I take on any other countries for fun purposes (although Amsterdam is the one exception to the rule).
Mark me off the cruise list because of my personal rule as well as the fact that I would rather hop on a plane and get to my destination early. Although you are waited on pretty well, I don't like the idea of what I would consider being cooped up on a ship. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Buddhagirl on April 05, 2011, 10:30:14 am Just an FYI - most cruises offer adventure excursions at every stop. You could adventure in 4 different countries in 4 days and never pack a suitcase. Understood. Although you are waited on pretty well, I don't like the idea of what I would consider being cooped up on a ship. I think you're missing the point of a cruise. The ship IS a big part of the vacation. Just sit back and enjoy doing nothing but sitting by the pool, working on your tan and on your drink. That IS the vacation.Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: SportsChick on April 05, 2011, 10:59:12 am I disagree with that 110% Pappy - I am not a beach girl. I'm not a sit around and work on my tan girl. We've done cruises which have included excursions to Mayan ruins, snorkeling, swimming with rays after driving a speed boat to get there etc. Ship days, we do trivia and games, eat, take pictures, walk around, enjoy time together. I think the closest we've come to sitting by the pool working on a tan was when we cruised on Ruby Princess and spent our first day at sea (A Sunday in November) watching football on the giant screen over the pool.
I'm with Brian on the dream vacation - we're going to Paris, Barcelona and doing a cruise. I get to cross Disneyland Paris off my bucket list (and I have a great fiance for letting me drag him to yet another Disney park). I can't wait, we fly out in 5 weeks, 6 days. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Brian Fein on April 05, 2011, 11:15:16 am we fly out in 5 weeks, 6 days. ...but who's counting?FWIW, the majority of people who take cruises spend the "at sea" days relaxing in the sun. Presumably because most of them don't get to do that seemingly every day of the year, like we Floridians do... Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on April 05, 2011, 11:17:52 am I would consider being cooped up on a ship. That is the equivalent of saying I wouldn't go to a huge resort because "I would feel cooped up". The ships are freaking huge. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: bsfins on April 05, 2011, 11:39:43 am I've never been on a cruise,so I don't know (I get motion sick pretty easy),the closest thing I've been to a cruise was a boat ride to Catalina island when I lived in California.(I got sick the whole way home)
I'm really a home body, traveling isn't a big desire for me... Dream Vacations (only in my wildest dreams, hit the lottery, champagne wishes and caviar dreams :D) 1.) Italy -somewhere off the beaten path, maybe the coliseum 2) Australia - I want to see the Great Barrier reef, and sharks, and fish I had in my aquarium.Kangaroos, and stuff like that... 3.) Ireland - I wanna see the beauty of it,castle, and a Pub... 4.) Japan - Bright lights, big city, fish markets, watch Japanese game shows...(What can I say I'm an odd ball! ;D) Attainable dreams (with my Mickey D's type salary, and job skills ;D) 1.) Dolphins game,in Miami 2.) Cubs Game ,Wrigley Field 3.) Myrtles Plantation,St. Francisville Louisiana - I'm not sure if I want to spend a night there, but definitely a few hours there 4.) The Stanley Hotel ,Estes park Colorado - Yeah I do want to spend the night. 5.) Rv Trip to Alaska. My favorite vacations were camping with my Mom and step Dad,and step sister. The first one wasn't very memorable, but my step sister and I, did get our own tent after that trip.Mom and Dad Snored so loud,we thought they'd attract bears. The trip we arrived during severe weather, and fished when the white bass were running was close to my favorite one.... Modified to add...I have to say,I'm not great in crowds, and a little claustrophobic...So some of those places are also kind of personal achievements also. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Dave Gray on April 05, 2011, 11:58:51 am My best vacation was a week in Italy. I had recently been through a break-up and went to a friend's wedding by myself. It was a great, cleansing experience that sort of represented a new start in my life. ...maybe the best week of my life.

It is being cooped up on a ship from my perspective. My vacation is the destination and what goes on there. But the bigger the ship, the less you notice the movements (which cause the sea sickness). So, when I went snorkling/fishing in the keys on a small boat, I got sea sick. In the 3 cruises that I have ever been on, I didn't even have the slightest feeling... Therefore, you may want to give it a try at least once in your lifetime :-) Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: Phishfan on April 05, 2011, 12:21:08 pm That is the equivalent of saying I wouldn't go to a huge resort because "I would feel cooped up". The ships are freaking huge. I get that. it doesn't make me feel different though. I can leave the resort if I want. I could also leave the ship, but I don't want to swim the ocean so I am indeed cooped up. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: SportsChick on April 05, 2011, 12:28:06 pm I can't imagine wanting to leave the ship. They are seriously floating cities now.

I think you may have misunderstood what I was trying to point out. I wasn't suggesting that sitting by the pool is the only thing to do on a cruise, I was just pointing out one of the activities that can be done on the ship itself. The excursions are wonderful, but that doesn't mean that your time on the ship is wasted. There's plenty to do on the ship besides sit by the pool. You can gamble, take in a show, enjoy a meal, play bingo or other assorted games, check out a sports bar, play some video games, sit in a jacuzzi, enjoy a drink or just watch the ocean go by. And if that don't grab you, enjoy a little quiet time with your spouse in your room and let the motion of the ocean take over. :)Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: bsfins on April 05, 2011, 01:18:15 pm Thank you Lee, I wont rule it out...I don't know where I'd go,I remember Az posting pics of his Alaskan Cruise a few years ago...Maybe skip the RV to Alaska, and do a cruise instead...
Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: StL FinFan on April 05, 2011, 01:48:39 pm My best vacation was my honeymoon in Jamaica & not just because it was my honeymoon. We saw a lot of the country. It's beautiful there. Puerto Vallararta, Mexico was a close second.
My, or our I should say, dream vacation is to visit Australia and New Zealand. Title: Re: Vacations...(Your dream vacations, and the best ones you've been on) Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on April 05, 2011, 03:43:55 pm I have only been on 1 cruise and I loved it.
My best vacation by far was my Cruise to Alaska. First it's only April and we have already cracked the 100 degree mark so typically I try to vacation in cooler joints. Which brings me to my first reason I loved Alaska. I left here in July and it was 117 that day. When I got to Alaska it was 65 and I enjoyed every minute of it. Being an outdoors type of guy this was my gig all the way around. The scenery I could sit and watch for hours the excursions were a blast and the air up there is like nothing else. We plan on going back and doing a 3 day trek through Denali National Park and another cruise. I also am planning to do some King Salmon fishing while there this time. Not to mention my wife and I had a blast on the ship together as well. We spent a lot of time in the Casino and hanging out with various people in the many bars and in the outside deck areas. I have been to quite a few places but these are the ones I am hoping to do in the next ten years. New York City Chicago Miami Hawaii Boston New Orleans for Mardi Gras - I have been there once but not for Mardi Gras and we are planning on going in 2012. You will notice that these are mostly Eastern US areas as there is not a whole lot of the West that I have not covered yet. I have been to Cleveland and Charlotte, NC but that is about it on my Eastern US journeys. I did stay 1 night in St. Louis as well on my travels but I did not get to visit the city much. |
