I don't care what the level of competition is, you can't teach speed! Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: Spider-Dan on May 01, 2011, 01:20:33 pm Ted Ginn is faster than this guy. We traded Ginn for a 5th and drafted Gates with a 4th.
Just saying, those who ignore history... Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: MikeO on May 01, 2011, 01:37:36 pm Ted Ginn is faster than this guy. Plus as a 4th rounder that is where his value lies. Nobody is expecting the world from this guy. Just a situational WR and KR. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! ROFL!!!!! Heyward-Bey anyone? Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: MikeO on May 02, 2011, 07:25:25 pm you are comparing 2 TOP 10 picks in Ginn and Heyward-Bay to a guy who got selected in Rd 4
You simply don't get it Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: Spider-Dan on May 02, 2011, 08:15:36 pm MikeO, does Ginn become a better player if he is drafted later? Are his hands more reliable? Is he better able to get off of jams at the line?
You're talking about value. That's great and all, but value or not, at the end of the day we already had a speedster on this team, and it didn't mean jack because he couldn't catch the ball and ran out of bounds when he did. If Gates can catch the ball and/or get some YAC, then great! He'll be a valuable addition to the offense. But whether Gates (or Ginn) can actually play well and fill a hole on this team has nothing to do with the slot in which they were drafted. It doesn't matter whether we picked Ginn at #9 or #199; if he can't play, he's taking up a roster spot from someone who can. P.S. For the record, I never wanted Miami to get rid of Ginn. I thought he was worth the roster spot just as a KR and deep threat. My point is, if you are a Ginn hater, you should wait to see what Gates can do on the field before you start writing ballads about his speed. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: masterfins on May 02, 2011, 10:00:57 pm jeez, let's play at least half a season before we start throwing a guy on the trash heap, or making him an All-Pro.

Totally agree. And I get called the negative one. Now EVERY super fast WR is compared to Ginn which means he automatically sucks. It's the dumbest logic I have ever heard Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! My point is, if you are a Ginn hater, you should wait to see what Gates can do on the field before you start writing ballads about his speed. 1) shows your knowledge of football if you wanted to keep Ginn 2) You simply don't get it. Because Ginn was super fast and sucked at WR, nobody can be happy we got Gates? That logic is so ass-backwards its almost comical. So because Ginn sucked Miami fans shouldn't ever draft a speed WR again? Or wait, are you saying that we shouldn't be excited about any rookies every again and in your words "start writing ballads" because Ginn was a bust? You are comparing a Top 10 pick out of OHIO ST to a 4th round pick out of some school that is lucky to be on cable access TV. And you are holding them to the same expectations. Ginn came into the league as a can't miss day 1 starter. This kid comes in as a "project player" who maybe in 2 or 3 years will be able to contribute ion offense. And you can't see th difference. It's F'n amazing to me. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: Spider-Dan on May 03, 2011, 01:03:53 am I think you agree with half of his statement, MikeO. You should probably read it all the way to the end.

You should probably read it all the way to the end. stop being a TROLL! ::) Nobody is making Gates All Pro. Pointing out he has great speed isn't making him an all pro. If I don't say anything nice about the kid, I am "being negative" and all of you guys go ape shit crazy. I make a simple observation that this kid has outstanding top level speed, and now I am "making him an all pro" I can't win with some of you fucking people!! You are just here to pick a fight and start trouble. Grow the F' up! Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: Spider-Dan on May 03, 2011, 01:07:12 am 1) shows your knowledge of football if you wanted to keep Ginn Ginn is a known commodity at KR and served a purpose that we ended up lacking sorely (which is why we got Gates). We traded Ginn for a 5th so we could spend a 4th to replace him.Quote 2) You simply don't get it. Because Ginn was super fast and sucked at WR, nobody can be happy we got Gates? Or wait, are you saying that we shouldn't be excited about any rookies every again and in your words "start writing ballads" because Ginn was a bust? No, I'm saying that fawning over the guy's speed like Al Davis is the last thing I'd expect from a fan who has (recently!) had the experience of a player with speed-and-nothing-else.Quote You are comparing a Top 10 pick out of OHIO ST to a 4th round pick out of some school that is lucky to be on cable access TV. And you are holding them to the same expectations. No, you are the one holding people to "expectations." The only expectation I had from Ginn in 2010 was to pull safeties down the field and return kicks. I think he can do those two things as well as almost any other speed WR in the league.Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: BigDaddyFin on May 03, 2011, 01:13:57 am Ginn was a bust. It's that simple.
They were right to draft him, they were right to give him a couple years to develop basic skills and improve his hands, and he didn't, so they were right to get rid of his ass. IF this Gates kid can fly, great. It's always exciting when you get a super fast reciever. But if he turns out to be another track star who can't catch, then we get rid of him. We won't know probably for two or three years. Duper and Clayton weren't high picks from big time schools either. And keep his role in mind too. Ginn was expected to come in and play from the first snap of the ball as a #1. This guy's probably going to be a #3 at best because we have Marshall Bess and Hartline already. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: MikeO on May 03, 2011, 01:16:11 am No, I'm saying that fawning over the guy's speed like Al Davis is the last thing I'd expect from a who the FUCK is fawning over him? Pointing out he has great speed isn't fawning. It's making an observation. On the other hand you are trashing the guy for no other reason that he reminds you of Ginn. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! But some thick headed Spider-Troll can't get it through is domed shaped mellon. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: Landshark on May 03, 2011, 08:13:23 am What I have been saying for days. But some thick headed Spider-Troll can't get it through is domed shaped mellon. And you wonder why everyone dog piles on you. That type of name calling is how it usually gets started. Back to the topic at hand. Let's hope Gates is not the scaredy cat that Ginn was. I have to agree with Spider Dan that Ginn was drafted way to high for the type of player he was, especially by a team that was coming off a 6-10 season and had other needs that were more pressing. Ginn was a luxury pick that the Dolphins couldn't afford. Come have a Landshark with me and chill. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: fyo on May 03, 2011, 08:24:24 am I'm still convinced that the only reason Ginn was picked that high was... Devin Hester.
Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: Phishfan on May 03, 2011, 09:34:26 am ^^^ I am convinced it was because Cameron was over his head.
Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: Landshark on May 03, 2011, 09:49:28 am ^^^ I am convinced it was because Cameron was over his head. More like Cameron was a complete idiot. Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: bsfins on May 03, 2011, 09:50:11 am I'll hold judgement till he's on the field.....
I agree with FYO,Mueller and Cameron shouldn't have taken him... Title: Re: Gates---SPEED!! Post by: BigDaddyFin on May 03, 2011, 03:53:43 pm I'm still convinced that the only reason Ginn was picked that high was... Devin Hester. In many ways you are correct. The biggest revolution in the game in the last 15 years has been special teams play. Kickers who can make it from 60 yards, and guys who can return kicks and punts for touchdowns on a moment's notice. Donte Hall, Brian Mitchell, Devin Hester. Now how would that lead you to draft a reciever like that so high? The following basic logic. Player is a good kick returner> Player must have really good speed + better than average open field ability. The problem was, Ted Ginn couldn't catch a hooker in a whore house. Do you keep a guy like that simply to return kicks? |
