Title: Metta World Peace Post by: Dave Gray on June 30, 2011, 01:25:25 pm I'm going to put on my flame-retardant underwear and commend Ron Artest as a person, and also his decision to change his name to "Metta World Peace."
I think that Artest is a great person and a great story for the NBA. The reason I say that is because he clearly wasn't always this way, but he's made clear strides to improve who he is, how he helps others, and what he means for the game. This means even more to me, because it's easy to embrace a thug image, and he didn't. To think that the guy who won the NBA's humanitarian award is the same guy that was involved in the brawl and all those technical fouls, etc. -- It speaks to his growth and his character. So.... On to the name-changing thing. I think it's stupid and I'd never do it. HOWEVER, I think that it's a good thing. He's using it as a publicity stunt to promote good vibes. I respect that. I think that it's going to get people talking and there are people who look up to him that may embrace peace instead of violence because of it. In addition, I saw an interview where he was explaining the "Metta" part and he was encouraging people (and kids) to use a dictionary and look it up to learn something new. Props to him. From a personal perspective, I wish him the best on his journey of growth or whatever we should call it.

I'd applaud the guy, but that would directly conflict with my "never cheer for a Laker/Yankee/Cowboy" rule. The name change thing, although strange, I understand his desire to do it and find it to be less of a publicity stunt than changing it to something like Ochocinco. Good for Ron!!!!!

He was a jerk at St.Johns and has been a jerk his entire NBA career |
