Title: Glazer Reports Dolphins trade for Reggie Bush
Post by: bsfins on July 28, 2011, 01:46:17 am
from Jay Glazers Twitter account...
I'm reporting the Saints and Fins have worked out terms of a trade for RB Reggie Bush, contingent on Bush agreeing to a new contract w Fins

Bush's agent Joel Segal negotiating w Dolphins tonight. It also hinges upon Bush taking deal and not deciding to stick w NO at reduced rate

http://twitter.com/#!/Jay_Glazer (http://twitter.com/#!/Jay_Glazer)

It was breaking news on the NFL network...

Late night "excuse me?" when I read the thread title... Orton-Bush would be a nice pair to add to the offense for sure.

Bush helps in a lot of ways. Can't knock the trade. Bush/Thomas are a clear upgrade over Ricky/Ronnie.

just heard this morning on my way into work on ESPN radio.  wow.  I didn't think this would happen.  not sure how I feel about this.  he's not an everyday back, in between the tackles runner, but he does provide a nice option on the perimeter and can move.

hope this can add to the Dolphins OFF

how many everydown backs are there in the NFL these days? Not as many as you think. Most teams split up the duties. Unless you have an AP, Chris Johnson type its a time-share.

I agree.  just surprised they pulled this off.  with their options dwindling (williams re-sign with CAR and bradshaw asking $$$), he is the best case scenario with what was left in the FA.  I love to see Bush make 15-20 plays a game and return some kicks.  hope he create a spark for the Phins.

Adding Bush is fills many voids.

1) Punt Returner

2) Another Slot WR on 3rd down. Now 4-WR sets with Bess and Bush in the slot matched up with lower tier CB's, Safties, and OLB....match-up nightmare for opponents

3) A RB with more spring in his step than Ricky/Ronnie

The days of 15 plays and 11 minute scoring drives could be gone. One little swing pass to Bush and he has the ability to take it to the house and out-run people and make people miss. Ricky/Ronnie can't make people miss and can't out-run people. We have a home run hitter. CHUNK-YARDAGE is the key term. Bush can give us CHUNK YARDAGE. No more 3 or 4 yard plays and slow moving football

Call me nuts...but I would love this move more if they also could find a way to bring Ricky back. Say what you will, the guy still moved the pile up the middle.  I would love to see him for one more year.

I would 2nd that.

I am wondering why they traded for a guy that was likely to be released this weekend.

^^ Control....You're not going to have to outbid other teams for his services..

I'm seeing Reggie agreed to a 2 year contract... Being reported on NFL network

they just drafted a "workhouse" back to handle all the starter carries. i can't understand why this was ever an issue in the thinking here...

good to see they have some freaking belief in the guys they draft to come in and do their jobs. they can use reggie as a josh cribbs type in this new offense. besides the fact that he can contribute on special teams.

This pretty much guarantees that Ricky and Ronnie are gone.

^^^ i mean that is why you get paid top dollar as a gm to make those decisions. otherwise, you could have joe blow putting a team together. especially on your higher draft picks, with a team like the dolphins having relatively few of those, you just have to make the freaking right decisions.

otherwise you are constantly chasing bad decisions.

ricky would make sense though at a bottom bargain price, but i'm not sure it works out now.

I heard it was a conditional sixth rounder.

If it's a conditional 6th rounder, I am happy with this trade.  I think it's a good acquisition and an overall good fit.

However, being realistic, I don't think it's a game-changer.  Bush isn't exactly what we thought, but he's a guy you have to plan for and has some explosiveness.  As MikeO pointed out, he also adds quite a bit to the return game, which has been lackluster.

A step in the right direction, but not a big one.

A steal for a conditional 6th rounder.  Good trade.

I heard it was a conditional sixth rounder.

I've heard everything from a 5th to a 2nd. No one who knows is saying. Yet.

His contract looks done (and certainly doesn't smell like 2nd round):

$9.75M total for 2 years. $2.5M as a signing bonus, $2.5 as salary this year, and $4.5M next year. (Doesn't quite add up, I know.) [MODIFIED TO ADD: The remaining $250k appears to be a workout bonus according to local NO media.]

According to ESPN,  Jonathon Amaya (DB, spot duty in 10 games last year) will go to the Saints as part of the deal.

Reggie Bush has two new best friends.....Mike and Jake... :D

I really hated the idea of Reggie Bush (signing him as a free agent) I thought he'd cost us big time, and he's just not worth it...While I don't like the idea of trading a pick,2 years ten million, I like it alot...

Agreed....Bush is not an everydown back and Thomas is an unknown at this point. Ricky probably won't cost a lot and he can still move the rock. If nothing else it is probably a cheap insurance policy.

On a side note I do like the Bush signing as he adds that "homerun play' ability and hopefully we use him as a return guy as well because he is a big upgrade in that department.

Just for grins I looked up the stats on Reggie Bush last year. He had one 20+ yard run last year and no touchdowns and two 20+ yard receptions with 1 touchdown.  Granted that he didn't have a lot of carries, but he did catch quite a few passes for a RB last year. And that was with New Orleans who tends to have a much more explosive offense then Miami.  I'd say that Reggie has plenty of upside, but I'll believe it when I see him do it for the Dolphins.

Wasn't he injured most of last season? I think he only started like 6 games. I am not sure I would base much on that.

You Ricky Williams lovers need to get over it. He ain't coming back. You can't badmouth your coach, QB, and teammates and expect to return.

Ricky is finally gone from Miami. Who wants a 34 year old RB anyway. His days are numbered. And I don't see a lot of teams knocking his door down to sign him. And old RB who is constant "DRAMA" off the field. Lets see IF and WHEN he finds a home. Might not be till Week 3 or 4 after an injury in late September.

Gotta disagree there.  Reggie Bush is a game changer.  He doesn't have the size or durability to be an every down back, but he's got the speed and elusiveness to catch a 3 yard screen pass in open space and take it all the way.  That's something Ricky and Ronnie can't do.

OK, how about we talk about his career numbers then shall we?

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/07/29/2335957/hoge-bush-is-a-matchup-guy-not.html

"Bush has gained 20 yards or more once every 52.4 carries (10 in 524 rushing attempts). That ratio ranks 39th among 51 active running backs with at least 400 carries, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Chris Johnson is first, at once every 21. Bush is just behind Willis McGahee (51.4) and just ahead of Ronnie Brown (53.7). "

That's right, just ahead of RONNIE BROWN.

Oh well, that's running the ball, but when he catches it he's FAR more dangerous...

"As a receiver, 16 of Bush’s 294 catches have gone for 20 yards or more. That one-every-18.4 ratio is 30th among 42 active running backs with at least 100 receptions. The leader is Correll Buckhalter at once every 8.0."

Ok, but when he DOES break one, he takes it to the HOUSE!!!...

"Bush has two career rushes and three receptions of 40 yards or more."

"Bush has gained 20 yards or more once every 52.4 carries [...] Bush is just behind Willis McGahee (51.4) and just ahead of Ronnie Brown (53.7). "

In fairness, if you increased that to "40 yards or more", Bush would probably have around the same number (i.e. 10), while Ronnie Brown would be right around zero. (Note: I like Ronnie Brown.)

^^ Updated... Try again.

By the way, Ronnie has 7 40+ yard runs. How quickly we forget. Granted that Ronnie has a ton more carries, but the perception is Ronnie never broke a 40 yard run and Bush does it all the time which just ain't true. I already miss Ronnie.

The problem with citing these stats (which, mind you, Bush is still winning over Ronnie) is that Bush isn't replacing Ronnie.  Daniel Thomas is.

It would be more accurate to say that Bush is replacing Ricky (provided Ricky doesn't come back).

^^ So does that mean they plan on playing them both on the early downs? Like maybe alternating between them or something? They're not really thinking about still running the wild cat with these guys are they?
