Dolphins signed running back Larry Johnson and waived running back Kory Sheets. Discuss. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: jtex316 on August 23, 2011, 10:29:53 am http://www.miamidolphins.com/news/dolphins-sign-rb-larry-johnson
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Sunstroke on August 23, 2011, 10:32:48 am I'd like to see Grigsby get more play...try to develop him a bit, more than I want to see us recycle older veteran backs. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: bsfins on August 23, 2011, 11:02:03 am My initial feelings when I saw this were ok,I can see that...It seemed like we had gotten a bunch of speed guys, but lacked a good thunder back to go with the lightning backs....
Then I go look and see Daniel Thomas listed at 6' 230#,and Lex Hillard listed at 5'11" 240#...Larry Johnson Is 6'1" 228#...He used to run like a beast, but that was a couple of years ago... :-\ Hasn't done squat in 2 years... I'm not sure how to feel.... Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Pappy13 on August 23, 2011, 11:44:13 am Well the only thing I can make of this is that they are happy with Bush being the "scat back" and still haven't decided who will be the "bread and butter" guy. Seems like Larry Johnson was brought in to compete with Thomas and Hilliard for that role. They had to make room somewhere and since Bush is staying, that didn't leave any room for Sheets. Personally I would have liked to seen them keep Sheets and drop Grigsby, but perhaps Grigsby fills some other role that Sheets doesn't?
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: JVides on August 23, 2011, 01:46:06 pm Great signing.
In 2004. I hope he has something in the tank, but I doubt it. I'd have rathered Clinton Portis if we were going after older backs. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: mecadonzilla on August 23, 2011, 02:28:33 pm I thought he was retired. lol
I wanted a veteran back in here, but he's not exactly what I had in mind. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Phishfan on August 23, 2011, 03:07:01 pm I bet he doesn't make the team.
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: fyo on August 23, 2011, 03:19:05 pm This says more about Sheets than Johnson, IMHO.
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Doc-phin on August 23, 2011, 03:24:31 pm This says more about Sheets than Johnson, IMHO. It says more about Thomas. But they aren't going to cut their 2nd round pick from this year. They had to get rid of Sheets over Hilliard due to lack of in game production. Sheets injury last year really hurt his chances of making it in this league. Very bad timing. But I am actually ok with the Johnson pickup. His big downfall has mostly been arrogance. I like the timing of the pickup now that he has a chip on his shoulder. Good fit, if he is in shape. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Brian Fein on August 23, 2011, 03:25:30 pm I don't understand why everyone is high on Sheets. Who cares? He hasn't shown anything.
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on August 23, 2011, 03:30:06 pm I wanted a veteran back in here, Why? of all the positions RB is the easiest to learn you really don't need a vet. AND it is one of the positions that tends to wear down folks. Vet WR or QBs are good thing. I will take rookie and 2nd year backs. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Doc-phin on August 23, 2011, 03:57:02 pm I don't understand why everyone is high on Sheets. Who cares? He hasn't shown anything. Personally, I wasn't exactly high on him but I was high on his potential as a role filler until we got Bush. I think everyone that you considered "high" on him, was really high on our need for speed at that position. We were also "high" on his potential for kick returns. But overall you are right. He hasn't done anything. Of course that has a lot to do with injury. Now that we brought in guys like Bush and Gates, Sheets ability to add speed to running back and kick return lost its intrigue. He (Sheets) looked better in his second preseason game, so perhaps he will get a shot elsewhere. Will be interesting to see if he can translate his speed to a game and be effective. I don't blame our front office for moving on though. Hilliard is good on special teams and as a backup full back, so he gets to stay for a bit but I wouldn't be surprised if this is his last year with us. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on August 23, 2011, 05:03:05 pm I scratched my head a little this morning when I read this on Facebook. I don't think Larry is even a shell of his former self and that concerns me a bit but then again we didn't really lose anything in the process so I don't think this move really hurt us either.
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: MikeO on August 23, 2011, 05:25:51 pm Larry has one job, when we get inside the 5 yard line punch it in the damn endzone. Thomas failed at that the other night the first time around, which raised a lot of red flags.
I don't think LJ beats out Lex anyway. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: fyo on August 23, 2011, 05:34:50 pm Thomas failed at that the other night the first time around, which raised a lot of red flags. In all fairness, he tried to jump it in from like 7 yards out ;) Completely ridiculous. Since this was only a preseason game, my reaction when he launched was simply a slight head-shake. Once games start to matter, that'll quickly turn into screaming, yelling, and swearing. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Thundergod on August 23, 2011, 05:55:40 pm Didn't even know he was still in the league. :D

Once games start to matter, that'll quickly turn into screaming, yelling, and swearing. obviously the coaches don't agree cause they ran out and signed a guy who has been out of the league for a bit Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: mecadonzilla on August 23, 2011, 09:23:58 pm Why? of all the positions RB is the easiest to learn you really don't need a vet. AND it is one of the positions that tends to wear down folks. Vet WR or QBs are good thing. I will take rookie and 2nd year backs. My concern was somebody who could pick up a blitz. Reggie Bush is fine, but if/when he's not there, can we trust Thomas with that? From what I understand, that's one of the last things a RB picks up. I have no idea why Lex Hilliard gets any love at all and want him to be cut soon in favor of someone who could actually help this team. Don't know if that's LJ (probably not). Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: MikeO on August 23, 2011, 09:51:57 pm lex hillard is an above average one-cut runner and plays amazing special teams. For Larry Johnson to beat him out will take an injury or a minor miracle
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Guru-In-Vegas on August 23, 2011, 10:57:08 pm I didn't even like the guy when he was "good" in KC. I always felt like he was no Priest Holmes and just benefitted from a beefy line.
Meh...By mid season we'll probably forget he was ever on the squad. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: mecadonzilla on August 23, 2011, 11:16:10 pm lex hillard is an above average one-cut runner and plays amazing special teams. For Larry Johnson to beat him out will take an injury or a minor miracle Larry Johnson would need a minor miracle to beat just about anybody out. That aside, I have no idea what Lex Hilliard has been allowed to draw a paycheck. The only thing he has ever shown was the ability to tackle someone on kick coverage. Lex will not be on any NFL roster after this season...regardless of making this team or not this year. He has nothing. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: fyo on August 24, 2011, 08:50:30 am obviously the coaches don't agree cause they ran out and signed a guy who has been out of the league for a bit Seriously, you need to reread my post. That was sarcasm. I even exaggerated (7 yards) to make it completely clear it was sarcasm. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: MaineDolFan on August 24, 2011, 09:29:06 am I get a kick out of this.
New England picks up a psychopath criminal who literally laid down on his team last season during a play and it's brilliant. Miami takes a stab at a running back who knows the game well, is still somewhat young, should have fresh legs after mostly sitting the past two years and it's a garbage move. Johnson could be a valuable piece. If he isn't, they move on. Simple as that. Funny how that happens. Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Brian Fein on August 24, 2011, 10:15:54 am ...who literally laid down on his team last season during a play... Wait, he did what? Lying down on the field during a play? I MUST see a video of this... Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: bsfins on August 24, 2011, 11:24:45 am The more I think about this, the more I like it....He's a low risk, high reward move, who just got an opportunity to see if he has anything left in the tank....A lot of fans wanted to bring back either Ricky Williams,or Ronnie Brown...Larry Johnson is younger than Ricky, but older than Ronnie...He's more accomplished (stat wise) than Ronnie, but not as accomplished as Ricky...
I'm interested to see what he does Saturday against the Bucs... Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Dolphster on August 24, 2011, 12:21:52 pm Meh, nothing to lose, I suppose. But I'll be surprised if he is on the opening day roster.
Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: MaineDolFan on August 24, 2011, 02:47:20 pm Wait, he did what? Lying down on the field during a play? I MUST see a video of this... You didn't hear about this? He literally laid down while a QB scrambled around. I am surprised you never saw it. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2010/11/haynesworth_laying_on_the_grou.html Title: Re: Dolphins sign Larry Johnson Post by: Sunstroke on August 24, 2011, 04:22:22 pm Some of the comments under that video are hilarious... My favorite: "This here ground is so soft. And that guy Vick's pretty fast. No way I'm gonna catch him no how...This ground is so soft." Just fucking hilarious! |
