Title: Anyone notice there was a game last night?
Post by: mecadonzilla on September 02, 2011, 03:26:13 pm
I know it was only scrubs playing scrubs, but there was football played last night.   ;D

I think Larry Johnson makes the team based off the strength of his play.  I bet Polite gets cut and both Hilliard and LJ stay.  Nothing against Polite, I don't think there's as much use for him with this new OC.  I even saw Hilliard at FB a little last night.

I have no idea who the 3rd QB will be.  After Moore left, our QB's didn't play very well.

That's because the starters didn't suit up ;)

I don't see how Polite *doesn't* make the team.

I think Polite will be on this roster at some point this season, but maybe not on opening day.

How many FBs does this team need?  Clay is the starter for now.  But I suppose they could go with 3 TEs (Fasano, Clay, whoever) and list Polite as the only FB on the roster due to Clay's H Back qualities.
I'm a Polite fan.  I want him to make the team, but I'm not sure it's going to happen.

To get rid of Polite (when we have yet to see Clay in a game that matters) would be stupid.

For all we know, Clay is a worse blocker/pass-catcher than Polite.

Joe Rose mentioned Polite hadn't played all preseason?  Is that right?  If that's the case, I'm thinking Polite doesn't make the team.  I'm getting a bad vibe there...

That's incorrect. He missed on a 1-yard gain ;)

We NEED to keep LJ..What this team has been lacking is playmakers and he's aALOT more the playmaker than Polite.  FB"s are a dime a dozen, I'm willing to bet that a healthy and motivated LJ can steal the job from Daniel Thomas, at least for this season.

So cut Lex Hilliard.  He's done absolutely nothing for 2 years.

There are plenty of players to cut on this team who are NOT the best in the league in converting short-yardage situations.

Hillard is our BEST special teams player and maybe our back-up RB. Yeah cut him..  ::)

Do some of you people watch the games?

I agree Hilliard is near worthless as an RB, but he can be an asset as a special teamer.  LJ won't be in on many special teams at this point in his career.

I wouldn't shed a tear if Hilliard was cut.

Hilliard is our best special teams player?  Then why has Sparano endlessly been praising Patrick Cobbs as the soul of our special teams for the last three years?  Or are you saying that he's the best now that Cobbs is gone?

Hilliard is no Steve Tasker.  He is useless as a back-up RB and "contributes on special teams" is expected from nearly every non-starter.  Explain to me why Hilliard is more valuable than Wallace, Moore, or Carroll.

I don't understand why that guy is still in a Dolphins uniform.  He had his shot in '09 when Ronnie went down, and he sucked.  And you want to keep him over a proven producer?

Cobb isn't even on roster what the heck are you talking about??  I'm living in the PRESENT! Not 2008! And nobody said he is Steve Tasker. He is just the best special teams player on our roster today! PERIOD!

He sucked in 2009? The whole team sucked for the most part in 2009, by that logic a lot of people shouldn't be on our roster who still are that were on that team!!   ::) And who the hell said he is "less" valuable than Wallace, Moore or Carroll.....now your making stuff up out of thin air. Not to mention those are 3 guys who play a different position, silly comparison. I just said Lex is our best special teams player...which he is!

Jason Trusnik has been our best special teams player this preseason.

Given the poor play of the special teams the last couple years, that's a pretty low standard.  If special teams is all he has to offer then he should be gone.

BEST PLAYER THIS YEAR!!!  ::)

Larry Johnson was just cut, so once again I was correct. Hillard is our 3rd RB. Possibly 2nd string if Thomas continues to struggle

So once again, when its convenient for your argument to judge a player by preseason performance that's okay, but...if you don't like the player you want to see him perform for a year until he's acceptable by your standards.  Got it.

Lex Hiliard hardly played this preseason. No idea what your talking about. He didn't dress for 1 game for sure, possibly 2. Not 100% sure off the top of my head.

Whatever. Once again, believe what you want

I'm shocked they kept a worthless runner like Hilliard.  He must be a true beast in special teams because that's the only thing he brings to the table.

As stated numerous times, he is their best special teams player and if Thomas starts slow possibly their 2nd best RB.

The guy can play!

Hilliard could only be the Dolphins second best runner if Thomas is on the IR.  Hilliard brings a big bag of nothing as an RB.  He has never shown anything as a runner at the pro level.  If/when Bush gets hurt, we're going to be in trouble if Thomas struggles.

He can play ST, though, but I don't think I would say he's the best.  Oh well, guess we've got to wait until 9-12 to see what in the world Ireland/Sporano were thinking.

That's where you're wrong.  In limited action in 2009, he showed flashes of being able to be a dominant runner.  He's a powerful runner that also has some springs in his legs.

Being stuck behind Ricky and Ronnie doesn't give you much in the way of opportunities.

I completely disagree.  Dominant (in flashes or not) is never a word I would ever use to describe Hilliard's time as a Dolphin.  He's not quick, fast, or powerful enough to ever move beyond the role he currently occupies...3rd RB and a special teamer.  If he didn't play special special teams he wouldn't be in the league.

BUT Lex does carry considerably less baggage than LJ, so I can see why Ireland/Sporano might not want him around a young team already carrying a WR with potential baggage issues of his own.

All this being said, come 9-12, Lex Hilliard will be my 3rd favorite RB in the leauge and I will root hard for him and Henne prove me wrong.

He wasn't stuck behind either of them.  In 2009, when Ronnie went down, he had a golden opportunity to win the starting job.  He played in 7 games after Ronnie went down.  The first two games were decent:

@CAR: 4rush/24yds
@BUF: 5rush/22yds

He was clearly not as good as a 32-year-old Ricky, but he was, at least, serviceable.
And then the wheels fell off.

vs. NE: 5rush/12yds
@JAX: 2rush/3yds
@TEN: 3rush/7yds
vs. HOU: 3rush/12yds
vs. PIT: 1rush/9yards

That is why he got exactly zero carries in 2010.

Hilliard is total garbage as a running back and I look forward to him proving otherwise.
