Title: Terry Francona's job on the line? Post by: MaineDolFan on September 23, 2011, 08:41:35 am This probably would not have come as such a shock to me if I were still as close to the organization as I used to be, but apparently Tito's job security is a bit fuzzy right now.
I guess I kind of thought that he was writing his own ticket, basically, as he is the best manager in the history of the franchise. However, not so fast. I was shooting the breeze with a buddy who still covers the team last night. In the middle of discussing our fantasy football league he drops on me "hard to imagine this place without Tito next season." I knew that Boston held an option on his contract for next season but, silly me, thought it had been picked up. Nope. And, according to my buddy (and reports that are now swirling on local radio), there is a growing disconnect between Tito and Theo. Turns out that Tito is about as impressed with Theo's free agent signings as I am. The difference is that Tito is actually in a position to TELL Theo that. To compound all of this, ownership is not thrilled with either guy. Apparently John Henry isn't thrilled that Theo has spent a quarter of a billion dollars on guys that have amounted to zero (literally a quarter of a billion...let that sit for a bit). He's even less thrilled that Tito hasn't found a way to get more out of these guys. Tito, on the flip side of all this, thinks that the front office lives in a fantasy world with these signings. Example, Carl Crawford: A left handed hitting, left handed throwing LEFT fielder. Additionally, Tito thinks that Boston's medical staff is full of quacks. A medical staff hand picked by Theo. John Henry seems to side with Tito on the medical staff end (if you believe the rumors). This partnership began in 2004. Does it end this year? Title: Re: Terry Francona's job on the line? Post by: masterfins on September 23, 2011, 02:00:32 pm There are any number of years in the past couple decades that the Yankees were in the same situation. Said something to a Red Sox buddy last night and his reply was shut-up, Football season has started and Hockey pre-season is here.
Title: Re: Terry Francona's job on the line? Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on September 23, 2011, 02:14:15 pm I think it is silly to shitcan a good manager when your team is having success. He has brought them a couple of titles and and they have been contenders almost every year since. Most teams would kill to have a decent manager so they are not starting over every few years so I don't see why you don't do everything in your power to keep a guy like Francona!!!!!
Title: Re: Terry Francona's job on the line? Post by: EDGECRUSHER on September 23, 2011, 06:53:08 pm Theo should stick to drafting and making moves for role players. His big name free agent signing track record is awful. His drafting is excellent. His desire to give guys like Lackey and Crawford big money is not.
I don't know how much I would blame Francona for this. I mean, injuries have destroyed their pitching staff to the point where they have had 1 quality start in 20 attempts. The offense still appears to be delivering. I know this collapse may cause heads to roll, but is it Tito's fault that: John Lackey's ERA is a full run higher than AJ Burnett's? Tim Wakefield is old? Carl Crawford pulled a Jayson Werth? Daniel Bard has forgotten that he is awesome? If you are going to blame him for that, then give him credit for having 3 legitimate MVP candidates in Ellsbury, Pedroia and A-Gone. Title: Re: Terry Francona's job on the line? Post by: EDGECRUSHER on September 23, 2011, 10:47:54 pm I thought it was pretty obvious Cashman was just driving up the price. I am sure almost every MLB team does that to hurt their rival. Why would the Yankees want Crawford when all of their outfield spots were already filled?
Boston's main competition for Crawford was probably the Angels, seeing as how they just can't get enough overpaid outfielders. Title: Re: Terry Francona's job on the line? Post by: MaineDolFan on September 26, 2011, 08:48:29 am I don't think Tito should lose his job, however all things comes to an end. As far as this goes: Maine, I stumbled across this article on Yahoo. Word of advice, pour yourself a stiff drink before clicking on the link. You're gonna need it. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Cashman-details-faking-out-Red-Sox-boosting-Cra?urn=mlb-wp20606 This has been going on since the beginning of time. Boston has done it to other teams, including the Yankees. Non-story. Boston knew they were bidding against the Angels the entire team. The Angels offer came in at $108 million, Crawford's people advised Boston that they felt the Angels would go into the 130's to get him. They set a price based on that and the market, it had nothing to do with the Yankees, really. |
