Title: Jump to the offseason: Who stays, who goes?
Post by: Dave Gray on October 05, 2011, 04:08:07 pm
Request: I don't have time to do this, but does anyone have access to our full roster + the general contract cap hit that each guy costs?  I'd like to see a full list and then sort from there.

My gut, right now, says this:

Goes:
Ireland
Sparano
Brandon Marshall
Nolan Carrol
Columbo
Carpenter

Stays:
Davone Bess
Vontae Davis
Jake Long
Reggie Bush (he's inexpensive, right)
Brandon Fields
Daniel Thomas
Henne - He is not worth cutting, but you need to bring in another QB to start, or at least compete.  This is a league that requires multiple viable starters, in my opinion.  ...if the price is right, too.

TBD by next GM/Coach:
position coaches/assistants -- don't dismantle everyone.  Let new team pick and choose.

Henne is a free agent.

Henne was supposed to be in my stays pile.  I'll edit.

Henne would be a great backup.

(source: roster from nfl.com, salaries from rotoworld.com)

EDITED TO NOTE: The numbers above are *salaries*, not cap hits, so any bonus that was paid out and prorated over the life of the contract is not included. A few players have significant incentives (most notably Cameron Wake) or fully guaranteed contracts (most notably Mike Pouncey). Where salaries were not available, a ? was used (and no contract length indicated -- don't assume just 1 year left). Where no precise salary was available, a rough estimate was made from the overall contract and other available information -- indicated by a ~.

EDITED AGAIN: Cap hits added in red (with the exception of Pouncey, where the salary is in red to indicate that it is fully guaranteed and thus counts towards the cap if he's cut.

Stays:

Vontae Davis
Jake Long
Karlos Dansby
Mike Pouncey
Brian Hartline
Davone Bess
Jared Odrick
Randy Starks
Kendell Langford
Brandon Fields
Koa Misi
Cameron Wake
Daniel Thomas

Everyone else is gone unless they are the only option...I know you can only fill so many positions in one offseason.

EDIT:  Forgot about Daniel Thomas

Daniel Thomas stays, too.  Cheap and promising, so far.

The table above now shows full cap hits.

If.....St.Louis gets the 1st pick....would we be able to package Marshall and our number 1 ( hopefully 2nd overall) for their 1st pick? (Luck).

I'd say that would be the way we unload Marshall...otherwise I see him staying with the team because no one would probably offer more than a 3rd round pick.

Marshall is going to be impossible to unload with his current contract... the way he's playing. Basically, we'll need to cut him or keep him.

Henne is a free agent. They won't resign him and he won't want to come back.

He's done in Miami after this year

ha ha, if you want to TRADE for the 1st overall pick in this draft with Andrew Luck. Try giving up pretty much the first 4 rounds of picks this year. And at least a 1st and 2nd next year. And maybe another early pick the year after that. And honestly, that PROBABLY isn't enough. Probably. A team might want a Ricky deal where it takes every pick in this draft a the first couple rounds next year. And even that may not be enough.

Do we try to re-sign Carey?

Here's who stays

Vontae Davis
Karlos Dansby
Cameron Wake
Jared Odrick
Jake Long
Mike Pouncey
Brandon Marshall
Davone Bess
Daniel Thomas
Brandon Fields (it's bad when your punter is one of your best players)

Everyone else can go as far as I'm concerned

No. Old and broken down

That's only if the team drafting is hot on Luck.  A team like St. Louis would not be because they have their franchise QB of the future, and with his contract, he is unmovable.

Looking at the table... wow, do we NOT have a lot of players signed long term.

As for who stays, it seems like a lot of people are discounting the CHEAP and SERVICEABLE guys we have. Sure, too many of them are starters right now, but they are not the ones you cut.

Cheap & Serviceable:

Chris Clemons ($600k)
Vontae Davis ($1M)
John Denney ($800k)
Brandon Fields ($1.1M)
Brian Hartline ($600k)
John Jerry ($500k)
Reshad Jones ($500k)
Koa Misi ($500k)
Jared Odrick ($600k)
Sean Smith ($500k)
Cameron Wake ($600k)
Daniel Thomas ($700k)

Okay, so several of those guys are more than just serviceable, but whatever you think of someone like Sean Smith, Reshad Jones or John Jerry, you're just not going to find BETTER players at that value.

NONE of the above should be cut. Try to bring in someone better, by all means, and demote them to backup, but no way should they be at risk of being cut (I'm assuming that John Jerry doesn't devolve into a fat blob, in which case he would need to go, regardless of the salary).
