Title: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: mecadonzilla on December 27, 2011, 12:05:34 am From a Dolphin perspective: it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, that the rules are set up to favor passing in the current NFL. The fall of the record was inevitable.
And I'm very happy Drew Brees beat the record. Been pissed he wasn't a Dolphin ever since Wanny didn't draft him. Jamar Fletcher was awesomely craptacular. From another Dolphin perspective: It's interesting that Brees' former San Diego teammate, Darren Sproles, was on the receiving end of that TD pass...because he was the guy who replaced Reggie Bush in that offense. Still, I'm sure Bush is congratulating Drew tonight. Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: bsmooth on December 27, 2011, 01:23:05 am Actually with the change in rules to favor offense and passing, I am surprised it did not happen sooner.

I am too. I also can only imagine what a young, healthy Dan Marino could do in today's NFL. Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: JVides on December 27, 2011, 10:23:18 am Congrats to Drew Brees, and before it's all said and done, maybe Tom Brady. As people kept approaching this record over the last 10 years, I was sure it would fall eventually.

Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: Spider-Dan on December 27, 2011, 12:52:18 pm Rodgers would have to pass for over 441 yards against DET, in a game that is meaningless for GB.
I wouldn't exactly describe that as a "pretty good shot." Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: CF DolFan on December 27, 2011, 12:56:37 pm Rodgers would have to pass for over 441 yards against DET, in a game that is meaningless for GB. I didn't neccesarily mean this year. He's young with lot's of gunslinging ahead of him. I wouldn't exactly describe that as a "pretty good shot." Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: Dave Gray on December 27, 2011, 03:38:50 pm I certainly don't mean to dimish what Brees has done. However, it does need to be said that today's NFL is way more heavily weighted to passing than it used to be.
Is it just me, or is this record kinda brushed off? Nobody seems to really care. The media is barely recognizing it. Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: tubba marxxx on December 27, 2011, 04:04:13 pm Disclaimer: This will probably piss you off.
As a Dolphins fan, I'm only like 3% upset that another one of Marino's records is gone. Before Marino broke all the records, Fran Tarkenton had almost every record in the book. Does his name EVER get brought up with the with greatest QB's ever conversation? I'll bet on no. My point is, MAYBE now the media can stop putting every QB to play in Miami under a microscope. MAYBE now we're not looking to the "successor" to Marino. Do I want Marino to be irrelevant? F*ck no. He is one of the best to ever play the game. Just stopppppppp with the talk of "finding Marino's replacement" or "finding the next Dan Marino" It's like Marino has a curse over the Dolphins QB position. Maybe as each record falls, there's less as less pressure to "fill the big shoes" left by Marino and we can actually get a serviceable QB. Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: Pappy13 on December 27, 2011, 04:08:11 pm I'm happy for Drew Brees. If I had to pick someone to break the record, it would have been Brees. Absolutely first class guy. Congrats Drew!
Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on December 27, 2011, 06:21:44 pm He broke Marino's full season record in 15 weeks.

Fran Tarkenton wasn't even a first-ballot HOFer. I wasn't around when he was playing, but his career seems to me more like a Steve Largent or Marcus Allen; guys who were never seriously considered the best ever, but played for long enough to rack up records of significance. In fact, right now, if you ask people if Favre was better than Marino (even though Favre broke practically all of Marino's career-based records), I doubt few would say yes. Like the comparison of Emmitt to Barry, it's just obvious that the record holder was not the superior player. You severely missed the point of my post Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: Spider-Dan on December 28, 2011, 02:14:23 am No, I got your point.
But the real point is that people "stopped" talking about Tarkenton because they never really talked about him in the first place. It took him three years to get into the HOF and he owned every record at the time. So no, someone passing Marino's record won't diminish talk of Marino in Miami. He's still considered arguably the greatest passer to ever play the game, and neither Favre nor Brees will take that from him. The one person who might is Peyton. Maybe as each record falls, there's less as less pressure to "fill the big shoes" left by Marino and we can actually get a serviceable QB. In fairness, this is going on in Denver as well. Heck, I think the Bills are still looking for the next Jim Kelly as well. The Jets are still looking for the next Namath, and he wasn't even that great! I think Miami's problems are the norm. Few teams have the fortune of going Montana-Young / Favre-Rodgers / Manning-Luck(?). Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: Brian Fein on December 28, 2011, 11:34:34 am When there are 4 or 5 guys approaching a record that stood for 27 years, something has changed.
Especially when one of those 5 guys is Eli Manning. Really? The fall of the record was inevitable. I felt this way too, until I saw the stat showing Marino was something like 50 yards per game ahead of the league's average, and Brees was like 90 yards per game ahead of the rest of the league average. That seems to indicate that even in a league more pass-happy, Brees' success was greater than Marino's. -EK Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: Pappy13 on December 28, 2011, 12:40:43 pm When there are 4 or 5 guys approaching a record that stood for 27 years, something has changed. That's the way the league likes it. Fans too for the most part I think. All the rules that have been put in place to protect the QB's are paying off. More guys are throwing the ball around then ever before and are avoiding major injuries better then ever before. The NFL's popularity is at an all-time high. You do the math.Especially when one of those 5 guys is Eli Manning. Really? The average this year is over 350yds a game. Marino averaged 317 in 84 Brady, Brees, averaged more, Rodgers and Manning averaged just under. Of course that did not count Brees running up the record more today in an effort to win the MVP since Rodgers did not play. Title: Re: Brees new single season passsing mark Post by: EKnight on January 01, 2012, 04:33:45 pm Yes I saw the stat. That's my point. Marino was 50 yards ahead of the average. For Brees the average went up 50 yards, and he STILL beat it by the 50 Marino beat it by, plus another 40. -EK
